Chapter Seventeen
I was crouched upon the tallest spire of the citys tallest building, what I had dubbed my listening post, trying to find any disturbances. I needed to get my mind off of Briana.I heard bones breaking, punches connecting, and blood spilling, and so I leapt off of the building and swung towards the source of the commotion: a gang war in the slums of the city. Sticking myself to a wall as the two gangs went at it, I screamed, Hey! Why wasnt I invited to the party? Im a fantastic dancer, you know! before beating the crap out of all of them without giving them a chance to fight back.
When I was done, I heard slow applause coming from the darkness. Turning, I found a man with thick brown hair in a finely tailored suit watching me. He looked to be in his fifties, and seemed strictly business.
Well done, he said, his accent British and his voice rich, though I sensed malice in it. You have passed our little test.
You mean you set this up? I asked accusingly.
That I did. I needed to get your attention. My employer desires a meeting with the great Spartan.
Oh yeah? I laughed humorlessly. Who are you, first of all, and secondly, who do you work for?
Apologies, the man said non-apologetically. I am Niles Ferris, personal assistant to Dean Murdoch. Perhaps youve heard of him?
My stomach dropped. I was worried that Murdoch had found out Id stolen his suit. I didnt let my fear enter my voice, however. Oh yeah? Well its nice to meet you. Now good bye. I jumped onto a building and started to crawl up, but Niles stopped me.
As I said, Mr. Murdoch would like to meet with you now, Mr. Wyatt.
I faced him sharply, and he stile wore that dark grin.

In an elevator of the MilleniCorp. building, I stood next to Niles Ferris, back in my school uniform. So howd you find out who I am? I asked.
Ferris smiled faintly. When you came here last summer and stole the prototype you are now wearing, you got shot. Do you remember?
I nodded, not seeing where he was going with this. Yeah, I remember. I also remember beating the hell out of your ******ed robot.
Ferris scowled. Yes, well, when you got shot some of your blood spilled onto the ground. We found it the next morning, and through it discovered the identity of the thief: you. But we were impressed with your abilities, and decided to keep an eye out for you. Sure enough, you appeared as Spartan, and after that we had to wait for the right moment to come to you. This is it.
Im flattered, I snarled. But how did you get my identity from my blood. I never gave, so its not on record.
As the elevator door opened, Ferris said, We have sources beyond imagination, as he walked out. I followed him into the spacious office of Dean Murdoch. A relatively young man by business world standards, his black hair was cut short, his skin was tan, and his brown eyes were so dark that they were almost black. Upon seeing me he put on a jovial grin, one which I did not entirely buy.
Ah, Kyle! he said. Please, have a seat. He motioned to a very comfortable looking chair in front of him, but I didnt exactly feel like playing nice to a guy who had all but kidnapped me.
Ill stand, I said emotionlessly.
It would be in your best interest , Ferris began, putting his hands on my shoulders. I pushed him off of me, eyes glowing
One more word and youre nothing more than a pile of ash.
Murdoch watched us, and then laughed. Now Niles, if he wants to stand, you should let him. That will be all.
Ferris bowed at his employer and glared at me. I stuck my tongue out at him in response, and when the elevator doors shut behind him, I turned back to Murdoch. So what do you want with me?
Youre direct, Murdoch purred. I like that, and I can respect it. Very well, I shall be equally forward: I know that you stole my prototype suit, and are wearing it right now. But I am not angry at you for that. Rather, Im in awe of the magnificent abilities you used to obtain it, and the ones that you use to fight crime on a daily basis. You have the powers of a God, yet you use it to help people who cant help themselves. How admirable. But I can offer you something much more fulfilling: a spot in the organization I and Niles are members of: Adventus. Our goal is to manipulate world events to our liking; we have members everywhere. It is how I got a sample of your blood, from the doctor who did your blood work some fifteen years ago. Those legends of the Illuminati are derived from us! We are the true masters of the world, and I have been authorized to grant you a place at our side when we inevitably rule.
But thats not why youre here. You see, Ive grown tired at being a lackey. I want to rule the group, but I need your help to do it. I alone cannot overthrow the Five Overlords, but you could, and when all is said and done, we could rule the world together!
Murdochs grin was manic now, and now I saw he was nothing more than a fanatic, a loon. I sensed desperation in his words, and even saw it I his eyes, but the reason I couldnt discern.
Thanks for the offer, but Im not interested in ruling the world, I said. Besides, ruling the world is so cliché. Why dont you try something else, like, I dont know, working on how to get to Mars. That way, when you do get there, you can rule that all you want.
However, if you or your organization does anything to threaten this world, Ill be there to stop you. It may not be a perfect place, but its got to be a hell of a lot better than a world under you.
I went for the elevator, but Murdochs words stopped me in my tracks. Think of your friends! Your father! Please Kyle! I beg you!
Turning to him, eyes glowing, I said coldly, Go near any of them, and Ill rip out your heart with my bare hands.
