The Supergirl News and Discussion Thread

I don't think we are getting a direct adaptation... They have even dropped "Woman of Tomorrow'" from the title.

Tom King did say Lobo was originally intended to be in the Woman of Tomorrow comics, however.

GreenK's post makes a lot of sense to me... I'd love for it to go down like that.

Like it or not, I would bet Jason Momoa/Lobo is going to be pushed hard in marketing... a lot of women (and men) love Momoa. How much is he going to be in this movie? My guess is maybe 10 minutes max? But we will see.
WoT is Tom King’s homage to True Grit. Originally Lobo was the Rooster Cogburn character and Kara was the Leboeuf character. But King changed it to have Kara be an amalgamation of both characters.

Given King’s involvement, I don’t see it straying so far from the original story as to have it be as generic as “Lobo is hired by this person to capture Kara.” I especially wouldn’t want it to be Mongul hiring Lobo as that would feel like it cheapens Mongul.

Even if they dropped WoT from the title, it still has Ruthye and Krem in it, so it is still primarily an adaptation of that story.

What is Superman doing with that phone? :wow::hmm

I wonder if we should expect a December teaser/trailer drop like we got with Superman.

I seem to recall reading about Supergirl having a presence at NYCC, but no such panel has been announced. Always could drop right around that time in October, I suppose.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the look of this film will be. With all the interstellar travelling Kara will presumably be doing, I hope Gillespie and Hardy have managed to make everything look good and not too green-screeny.

I've been looking forward to finally getting a new Supergirl movie for years! Really liked Benoist's version even as those stories could have been better. My real preference would have been for a New 52 version. Sasha Calle's Supergirl was pretty dang close emotionally to that, as I love that version's outright anger and 'clobbering time' attitude.

Unfortunately, what I saw from the Superman teaser was pretty disappointing, for me at least. Yes, it was just a teaser, but it's supposed to grab you and get you (me) interested, and in that respect, it failed. I haven't read Woman of Tomorrow yet but I think I will go buy it and give it a shot, but the drunk party-girl schitck just never interested me. It just seems to be the least creative and the laziest way to depict a character.

Which made me glad to learn that Gunn was not writing or directing this one! Yay! His directing style which, IMO, worked great in GotG did not work with Superman. That movie was pretty meh for me. I ended up staying just for the Supergirl teaser, which, well you know...

Hopefully Gillespie won't spiral down that route, as I really want this to succeed! That's why even though I didn't really like Superman, I'm glad it's showing good numbers and good audience reaction.

While I always had more interest in the Supergirl film than I did Superman, I take DanielRPK's word about as far as I can throw him, which is not very far.

I would like to see a teaser before the end of the year. Then again, I noticed that Warner Bros. will basically be going into vacation mode past October (MKII). No new movies. Then again, they can attach it to other studios' movies (Wicked 2, Avatar 3).

I wouldn't be so quick to judge the DCU's Supergirl. Yeah, she's a bit of a rebel... But...

Yeah with her type of trauma getting drunk and having a good time every so often is hardly the worst way she could medicate ;)

Is it even explained how Supergirl can get drunk?
Under a red sun, Supergirl and Superman both lose their powers, effectively turning them into normal Kryptonians. In the comic which the film is based on, Kara travels to a planet with a red sun to get drunk on her 21st birthday.

That’s her character’s starting point in Woman of Tomorrow and it’s by far the most interesting and complex take the character has ever had, imo. Nothing “lazy” about it.

👍 I understand the effects a red sun has on Kryptonians.

Her heading there solely to get drunk is kinda hilarious. I think I love this version of Supergirl already 🙂

If they do her origin like the comic you will wonder why she doesn't do it every night. Heartbreaking stuff...

I don't think I'm judging too quickly as I am certainly going to give it a chance. I've waited too long for a new Supergirl movie (barring the lost opportunity with Calle) to write it off for that. I'm just tired of the drunk schtick as the 'go-to' for a character with a rough history, or having it be used as a punch line.

'Lazy' as being done way too much. Getting the character drunk just seems to be the easy out.
Sadly, our first scene of this character is basically going 'I'm drunk, *****!' and I am (was) hoping for better than that. It was done basically just for a laugh, which is something Gunn does a lot, and I'm now hoping that Gillespie will bring on a more nuanced and less cringe portrayal of it.

On another part of the backstory, I'm wondering what Kara's opinion is on her aunt and uncle basically telling Kal to 'get many wives and conquer?' Surely if this was an attitude common to Krypton she would know of it. And that just highlights another thing I didn't like about the new Superman movie.

It's literally her starting point for the story they're telling. Which is a GREAT story, and I certainly wouldn't want to change how it starts, because it's devastating when we see the cause. And when else was it done? I remember one scene of her getting drunk on the TV show, but that wasn't even about her trauma, and that's all that comes to mind for me.

People get drunk to numb the pain. That's not lazy, it's real. Supergirl doing so is more surprising for the audience than anything. "Lazy" would've been for her to show up, be a regular (maybe "sassy") teen, have some cute banter with Clark, and leave. That's pretty much what people expect from her who don't know any better. No one was expecting this to be our first look at her, which makes it the opposite of lazy, tbh.

Overdone, IMO, in movies and stories in general. Character has a rough history, well get them drunk. Which can be fine. As stated above, Gunn used as a gag rather than anything serious, which is why I am hoping that Gillespie does it better.

It's a gag until you learn more. That's part of what makes it effective.

Gunn's modus operandi is basically "it's funny until you find out what's behind it." Which perfectly tees up Gillespie's film in this case.
