The Supergirl News and Discussion Thread

Overdone, IMO, in movies and stories in general. Character has a rough history, well get them drunk. Which can be fine. As stated above, Gunn used as a gag rather than anything serious, which is why I am hoping that Gillespie does it better.
Read the story...not being a jerk but read it. Her attitude makes sense. I say that as someone who has firsthand knowledge of how people deal with serious trauma.

It's a gag until you learn more. That's part of what makes it effective.

Gunn's modus operandi is basically "it's funny until you find out what's behind it." Which perfectly tees up Gillespie's film in this case.
It missed the mark. Personally, using a gag to disarm/rob dramatic moments just cheapens the storytelling for me.
I am just glad Gunn is not doing this one, and hoping Gillespie does better with it.

I don't think you are being a jerk, and I do intend to read it.
And certainly (other than being tired of the usual drunk-gimmick) her attitude will make sense when portrayed effectively.

It didn't miss the mark at all imo. There's nothing to "do better" because Gillespie is getting the payoff. This was the setup. And the setup is supposed to disarm. That was the point of the scene (aside from explaining Krypto).

Yep. Its all part of the same narrative and Gunn just gave the appetizer. And he did it exactly how it should be done. Judge everything based on the end its a full story :)

Oh well, just gonna have to differ on this. Too gagsy for me. I'll just hope for better when the movie comes out. :highfive:

It sets up her film

I apologize for being brash, but I believe that you kinda missed the mark.

Supergirl has ONE very short scene, and in that moment she's putting on a front of being carefree and rebellious, masking her true feelings... An attitude which Superman himself doesn't fully approve in the scene.

Why would they give away and spoil Supergirl's character (development), when that's her starting point in the upcoming movie?

Also, the scene is not really a sequel tease, it's more of an easter egg which sets up the fact that Supergirl exists in this universe, her relationship to Superman and Krypto, and status quo / current mindset.

As for James Gunn on Superman, I don't think that he robs dramatic or darker moments through jokes. There's a nice balance and tonal switches to make sure that the different tones have the right amount of space to breathe and truly settle in. He also doesn't shy away from uglier moments in the story.

I find his movies (and series) to be emotional rollercoasters, where you laugh one moment, and try to hold back tears the next.

But hey, opinions.

I am aware of the hard history she has and that she uses drink and a care-free attitude to mask it, but again, the way he did it brings it off as too much of a gag for me.
Gunn - you know her terrible history, her planet dead, her parents gone, all of her friends turned to stellar dust, but hey let's have a good laugh instead when we see her, huh?
I get it. The tone of the film was for light-hearted laughs and gags. I'm more for the drama of Superman the Movie, Returns or Man of Steel. This was too much like Guardians of the Galaxy, with drama robbed for laughs. Yes, it worked for GotG, but I was hoping for different here.
