The Thunderbolts* News and Discussion Thread

Unless this gets really great reviews, I just can’t see this doing the blockbuster Marvel box office numbers with characters the general public doesn’t really know except for Bucky.

Probably will do the least amount of the 3 MCU movies coming out this year. A better release date for this seems like August than May.
Maybe placing it at the start of, May was intended to be a vote of confidence.

Very very good trailer, smart song choice. Very much looking forward to it.

Found it interesting that they list the characters as:
Yelena
Bucky
John Walker
Red Guardian
Ghost
Taskmaster

Would think Walker would be "US Agent", and I hope Yelena and Bucky have new code names by time the movie ends

The new trailer was pretty rad.

Pretty good trailer. :like:
The beats, humor and action worked better for me on this one. It’s a bit of a rehash with them forming a team of expendables or a bunch of rejects… but hey it’s a formula that works and it may once again pay dividends. A nitpick would be how the footage around
Sentry
is so dark and that is a bit of a letdown. I was sort of hoping to see a glimpse of the colorful suit which would be kind of a nice change of pace to have such an imposing/powerful character wearing something like that. Or maybe they’re deliberately having a darker coloring around those scenes to hide it a bit more. That would be understandable.

Most people probably recognize John Walker simply as John Walker. He didn’t officially take on the codename U.S. Agent until the very end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and even then, it was only mentioned once. I have a feeling he'll be referred to as U.S. Agent more consistently after this film.

Also, that trailer was incredible! I have a strong hunch Marvel Studios might have a sleeper hit on their hands with this one.

It won't do super big numbers.

But first weekend of May is still a better weekend than what Fantastic 4 has right now. Also weekday numbers are generally higher in summer months, compare to months like February (Brave New World's month).

My assumption is
They are dark because that's not Sentry, it's The Void

That was a good one. Only criticism is how damn grey it looks. Other than that, this trailer has piqued my interest.
The filter they used is really similar to DCEU... well Zack Snyder's usual color grading for his films.

Ialso thought about it the way some of it is framed and how the coloring is sucked out of some shots but I’m still unsure it’s indeed the case. I feel like if that would be the case it would be much more nightmarish. We’ll see though.

Not familiar with the character of The Sentry at all but am really intrigued by this movie and am really forward to it.
What exactly does Sentry do as The Void? Is it just him turning turning emo and evil like Jean does as The Dark Phoenix? Or does it split into an actual new entity that he faces?

I see in the trailer people disappearing, assuming it's the void wrong doing could this be the way they tie the movie with the overall narrative of the multiverse and/or the dark dimension from F4?

Could he be sending people to the same void as the only from Loki? That could be a nice way of doing the multiverse stuff and keeping things grounded and without using marvel sparkle circles, or tva portals. Just make people go *poof*

Apparently he has a tower in the same location as The Avengers tower? Some speculate it could be underground of Avenger tower but it reminds of The Dark Tower from Stephen Kings novel? The axis of all realities. Could that be a nexus location existing in the same as Avenger Tower just alternate realities serving as some kind of dormant portal?

Jeff Sneider says Disney and Marvel executives are “freaking out” about this movie believing it will bomb.

If that's true, makes me wonder why they even greenlit it in the first place. Disney and Marvel should blame themselves for that.

Building a movie over supporting characters from various movies/tv shows isn't a good move. Also, even if I was a Thunderbolts comic book fan, this is simply Thunderbolts in name only. Its hard to anticipate this. Eternals in comparison, was at least interesting (roster wise/visually). Even though Thunderbolts* the movie, doesn't look cheap, if someone told me its a new show for Disney+, I would have believed them.

Sneider is a clown. His reasoning is that it'll bomb because it features characters nobody cares about. Bucky is a fan favorite and Yelena is one of the best received characters post-Endgame so that reasoning doesn't really work.

That’s The Spirit!

Unfortunately Yelena is from one of the worst MCU movies, so I can see this will be most people’s intro to her.

I suspect the biggest thing that will hold this back is just the lack of goodwill towards the MCU nowadays so they'll have a harder time marketing a more obscure property like this as compared to something like the Fantastic Four.

My gut feeling is that this will be a better received than BNW currently is so I think it'll do fine.

Critically, yeah I’m not sure. But I think Fantastic Four will be the “comeback” for the MCU this year. It has a fresh look and those characters are well known, so I think if nothing else, that’ll be the one that might turn the tide.

I agree 100%. They're going to have a hard time bouncing back if FF is another swing and a miss.

I thought Brave New World was quite uninspiring. I can't believe they had that as the main threat and use that storyline under a Captain America movie. I would be surprised if Thunderbolts* isn't better.

The credits for Thunderbolts:
- Hannah JK get a "with"-credit. She has to be a very good agent and/or is really important for this movie
- Sebastian Stan is 2nd in that list, so I guess the rumors of a very small appereance are wrong
- Lewis Pullman is BEHIND Olga Kurylenko, which is in only one scene in the trailers so far. What the hell?

Like you, I’m curious if Hannah John-Kamen’s character plays a more significant role in the film than we realize.

From the first teaser trailer, it seemed pretty clear that Bucky would be a main character in this. I'm happy about that.

It’s possible Olga Kurylenko’s agent negotiated higher billing for her, or perhaps Taskmaster has a larger role than we expect. Maybe she’s working on a separate mission for Val?

I also thought Scarlett Johansson was receiving an executive producer credit—interesting that she’s not listed.

As for Jeff Sneider, while he’s a solid entertainment reporter, he does have some unusual takes at times. It wouldn’t be surprising if Thunderbolts* is well received and a box office hit, yet he still finds a way to spin it to fit his narrative—just like he did with Deadpool & Wolverine.
