The Thunderbolts* News and Discussion Thread

I've seen Walker being hailed as one of the best parts of Falcon and the Winter Soldier by a lot of people. And he was.

John Walker has been one of the best written characters in the MCU in the last 6-7 years. And Wyatt Russell has showcased how strong of an actor he really is. I hope more people will come around and like the character more after this film.

Unless Doomsday and Secret Wars do VERY well. Not to mention Fantastic Four, which will lead to Doomsday.
They aren't going to utilize the success of Doomsday, Secret Wars and Fantastic 4, just to greenlit a Captain America 5 and Thunderbolts 2*

I hope I don't feel the runtime with that. I like a long movie like Endgame, but there are movies over 2 hours, that really feel like more than 2 hours*

So this is not a movie for kids? Good luck having some kids sit there for 2hrs and 20+ min because opening trailers. Parents having to get baby sitters or family to watch for that long. People that are on fence are more likely to wait for stream especially since the characters are newer, easier to justify watching Avenger characters. Hope the pacing is good enough to not make us feel it.

Love that optimism.

It's tricky because, yes, this is a Marvel movie and it obviously involves superheroes, but I am glad that MCU is not pumping out 90 minute movies to appease to parents with young children.

The runtime news is fake. A theater chain has been posting the 2h20mins runtime as a placeholder for several movies such as Thunderbolts, Mission Impossible, Fantastic Four and Superman, and the "Twitter scoopers" just went with it

I dont mind that.

I thought the biggest issue with the studio was always trying to make their movies for everyone?

They are called the McDonalds of movies for a reason.

The shortest MCU movie iirc is The Marvels. Imo, they could make it as long or short as they want to, as long as the movie needs it.

I think Thunderbolts* is already a harder sell compare to previous MCU movies, so trying to make it shorter, just so kids/people won't get bored especially during talking scenes, isn't gonna help anyway.

That being said, I can't recall any animated movie that is over 2 hours*

Start exploring the different tones and textures of the Marvel universe and worry about making great movies and tv first. Demands and expectations from the auduence change, so eventually people will move on if you don't offer anything new, or more precisely - authentic.

People are rejecting the big mac and fries and craving the filet mignon.

If Mcu was McDonalds. Thunderbolts* would be an infamous discontinued menu item.

Big Mac sucks though*

I do like Yelena she was great in BW and the best part for me. I just don't think Red Guardian and Yelena can be as good if it was 2hrs and 20min. I think the true time will be similar to Cap 4.

The movie is going to be a tough sell for casual fans. Besides Bucky none of these characters have appeared in video games, animated series(as a recurring character), Yelena briefly in Hawkeye.

I feel like they could have also tried to make it R rated, think it could have helped create intrigue. The best thing is that it does not have any competition for 3 weeks.

I will get optimistic again when the real X-Men teases start up.

Yep. I don't give credence to any runtime reports until ticket pre-sales start.

This whole project just seems like a Disney+ series heading to the cinemas*

I like the idea of Thunderbolts but I wonder if this should have just been a Black Widow sequel (especially if Yelena is the lead)-- Black Widow & the Thunderbolts (or some such). At least BW is a recognizable IP.

MCU had to deal with the launch of a new streaming series, a pandemic, an actors strike, and a writers strike so I can understand why the Multiverse Saga has been disjointed but, in hindsight, it would have been nice to see MCU more clearly set up, in tandem, both the Multiverse storyline (in movies like NWH, DS, D&W) and the Dark Reign adaptation (in BW, FATWS, BP2, CABNW).

And, what is currently the filet mignon of movies?

The best things Marvel has done in the last 5 years came from creators working outside the MCU, like Daredevil on Netflix or Legion on FX.

I don't need a filet mignon, I love the genre so it shouldn't need to appologize for itself with proclamations like "trancendance", etc, but it should aspire to be more reflective of the source material, which is far more diverse in language, tone, and creator expression than the MCU has ever given us.

The point is to move away from the 4-quadrant, ready-made formula/made by a committee feel. Get back to basics and focus on character and how stories work, not so much fixated on returns and how to best maximize profit. I think people are craving more authenticity now, which is probably why Daredevil: Born Again will be a hit for Marvel whether it's good or not, because it continues on with a series created outside the MCU ecosystem initially and which felt so different and authentic.

This^

Everything in Phase 4 and 5 should've been in one of two buckets

either dealing with Endgame fallout (those you mentioned, plus Thunderbolts, Eternals, Hawkeye, Thor)
or setting up the Multiverse (Also Shang-Chi, Ant Man, etc)

with just one or two crossovers like Wandavision and The Marvels
