The Thunderbolts* News and Discussion Thread

The scenes from the previous MCU films being included in the final trailer, reminded me of when Iron Man/Thanos/Steve were shown in the final trailer of The Marvels*

I do like Sentry just being a silhouette, but I don't love the dusty effect as far as his powers go. Feels a lil too weightless.

I don't like it at all, and I still don't get why Sentry is in this movie.

Some of the Chinese character posters take an interesting spin.

Red Guardian
Black Widow’s fake dad - other than getting beaten up he is often a funny tank

Captain America internal testing version (referring to USAgent)
Pirated Captain America

Winter Soldier
Captain America’s Bro
Hit man whose arm often gets dislodged

Black Widow 2.0
Black Widow’s fake sister
Captain, but an emotional type-O personality (dunno what that means)

Where can I see these posters*

Sounds like someone trying to describe the characters to people who've never heard of them, but in a really unhelpful kinda way.

I mean, its a translation of a translation. Most likely, the english description was converted to a proper chinese phrase, and then someone translated it word for word to get that result.

Marketing is having fun.

Posters can been seen via this link.

I think if you can read the original language it is more amusing than any literal translation can do. It is definitely aiming at those who don’t know these characters hence the reference to Cap and Black Widow.

Edited: well not sure how to make insert link works. It works while typing but disappears after save.

Could be a game of telephone, yeah. Can't read Chinese, unfortunately.

Went looking for the posters. More translations in the comments, which helps.

Yeah Sentry is still the biggest selling point about this for me and I agree with some here that his “powers” or more likely “The Void” powers look a bit cheap, just turning everything and people into shadows is a bit underwhelming but I do wonder what happens in that shadow and how everything is perceived from within(if there’s even such a thing).

The chemistry between the ragtag team of heroes seems fine while the drama bits seem a bit more forced but it could very well work in context.

Overall seems like it could be a decent/fine time.

Interesting so far reactions point to a very different direction than what was promoted as a bunch of rejects trying the impossible to defeat an invincible foe. It the reactions are true that it's about what the final trailer hints at I think I will end up liking it quite a bit depending on the execution. I'm kind of over with the pure big effects big fights humor overdrive CBMs atm.

I like this reviewer usually, he says the movie is “ok” and “formulaic.” He says the first half is good and interesting and the second half turns into your typical mcu stuff that you’ve seen before and not a movie you’re going to remember. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I feel like with so many Marvel movies that came out in the last 5 years, most of these films aren't just going to wow critics easily. The last time, a MCU film got great reviews was Spider-Man No Way Home, 2021. I wouldn't call Wakanda Forever's 82% great, while Deadpool & Wolverine is the worst reviewed Deadpool movie. Guardians 3 is also the worst reviewed Guardians movie.

I think this combination of Black Widow/Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast minus Scarlett/Anthony + Ghost/Sentry don't really feel inspired to me. I feel like they used this Thunderbolts name, to further develop the other characters we already saw in the past, than actually do a Thunderbolts movie. It feels like a Disney+ project that got upgraded into a movie release, just cause*

I think what separates Thunderbolts reactions from others is that the latter tend to focus on certain things without mentioning or talking about the writing for the story and the characters and usually only talk about the action, maybe a performance here or there, humor, etc. When the story and the characters are not mentioned as the main selling point in your reaction, that’s usually not a good sign.

In all of these reactions, however, the main selling point and the highest praise is the writing of characters, the story, filmaking, etc. I know that seems like such an obvious,”Yeah, no s**t! All films should be like that!” sort of thing to highlight, but, for the MCU, which is known usually for prioritizing its universe building and setting up the next thing and serviceable, inconsistent or below par writing, I think that’s a big deal when it comes up.

This doesn’t feel like the usual kind of thing where people have effusive praise for a film just because they were invited to a screening. This genuinely feels like something truly special.

The junket screening reactions are usually juiced up and unanimously positive. We'll get a better consensus when the all-media screenings start next week.
