Revenge of the Fallen The Twins: Racist?

Then, by definition, clearly it IS mocking a subgroup.
No it mocking blacks via robot caricatures.

You don't meet many outright racist people, do you?

I'll give you a hint. They don't portray blacks in a playful, silly light.
Nice generalization but some racist actually make fun of blacks.

That's...ridiculous So the fact that the only "black" robots in the movie are silly and mocked makes it a racist portrayal...just because they are the only robots in the film with any black characteristics at all?

I didn't realize this was TRANSFORMERS: A CRITIQUE OF BLACKS BASED ON WHAT WE SHOW AND WHAT WE DON'T SHOW.

I could have sworn it was TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN.
Yes, if the only representation of a race is a blatant stereotype there is nothing to balance it out. It's bad enough simply including the ugly stereotype but when it's the sole representation of a race it's even worse.

And almost no one would get this upset, because those steroetypes have been used for jokes, like the urban hip hop cliche...for years.
Not in the same context. The twins are complete buffooons. The most ignorant Transformers by far and they also just happen to speak like they're from the ghetto. What a coincidence.

So...this movie...instead of being a fun romp through TRANSFORMERS...should "balance out" people's perceptions of black people by simply adding a number of upstanding black Transforming robot characters?
Why not? Transformers with white personalities are mostly represented as noble and dignified.

Oh, no, the young black kids are being mocked for their culture?

Tough.

As I said before, other subcultures have been being mocked for years. Nerds, preps, band geeks, etc.
It says to black kids if they speak slang they're complete morons. When you take one of the rare things black kids can use to identify with each other and call them idiots in front of their peers it's worse than saying band geeks are promiscuous or preps are arrogant. And a Transformer movie is no place to make fun of black kids anyway. It's supposed to be a fun giant robot movie. remember???

What's your point? That because many racists use this to stereotype all black people, that Bay making two silly robots like this is his take on all black people?

I'm sorry, that argument just doesn't hold water on a logical level.
Actually it holds fine. If you use the same stereotypes as a racist then you're message could easily be conveyed as racist. A racist person mocks blacks in a certain manner and the Bay puts it on screen. Well of course it will be seen as racist also.

With certain elements to it. Slavery. Servitude. Needing a white person's generosity and assistance to make it through the world. Do you see that from The Twins?

A certain part of black subculture became cool.

This, and the whole "ghetto portrayal" of blacks, is lightyears from "Yassah massah". It simply is.
The submissive slave stereotype is outdated but the new stereotypes of blacks as ignorant criminals is just as destructive in it's intent.

Uh...yes. In that context. This is an entirely different context.

Is greedy jews with big noses a subculture? what about gold-toothed jive talking robots who don't read?

To a point. You can "group" anything.

But no. Being greedy alone is not a sizeable social subculture.

"Ghetto" is a subculture. "Ghetto" (or whatever it's called this week) has certain characteristics. Cursing, braggadaccio, a lack of interest in education, and of course, bling, among others.

These robots are clearly "ghetto" more than anything else, although if there's even a smidge of redneck to them, this argument will be moot.
Because "ghetto" is a generalization embraced by racist you shouldn't toy with that characterization in a blockbuster movie. Especially when representing the dumbest Transformers. Bragging about not reading is not an acceptable stereotype of black characters.

Again people, I missed the part where Bay comes out and says "All blacks are like this". I missed the part where two alien ROBOTS even begin to imply "all blacks are like this".
If the only Asian robot brags about not being much of a driver and speaks with a chinese accent it implies that's how you interpret asians. Same goes for the twins and the implications of black ignorance.

Are there no other black characters in the movie? How are they portrayed?

Anyway, I for one, hope there's a female black stereotype Transformer in the sequel. Maybe Tyler Perry could voice it. Really get people up in arms.
yeah well I hope something offends and bothers you too. I'm sure then someone can rub your face in it.

This thread is dangerously close to closure, man. Since most reviews are commenting on this though, I would urge the mods to keep it open, but just monitor it.

Ugh, I can't believe I'm about to defend a Michael Bay film.:whatever:

But to me, the ghetto-type deserves to be mocked every bit as much as the in-bred redneck type does. Neither are indicative of an entire race, just portions of it. But you guys are right, there is no Bill Cosby-bot onscreen. Guess they'll just have to make do with Gibson as a non-caricatured black man.

Over-sensitive much?
The ghetto-talking, ignorant black is a poster boy example for racists. Redneck by it's very definition implies a subgroup of whites.

under-sensitive much?

Lets be careful in here. Discuss this without attacking others....AND DO NOT MAKE STUPID RACIST JOKES AND THEN TRY AND USE THE 'IT WAS ONLY A JOKE' CARD.....it will not work.

I'd say the redneck stereotype can easily be seen the same way as you describe the ghetto type.

If a racist person were to imitate a black person what you get is the twins. Bay simply put that racist caricature on the big screen.

I don't think anyone should comment one way or the other on this until they've seen it. I haven't seen it myself so I won't comment on it until I do see it.

Dueling smilies is not discussion.

There is really no discussion in here anyways:o

So, for those of you who have seen the film...

Do the Twins "sound" black or white? And I don't mean the slang they use, which can be any color in the world these days. I mean the voices.

No it mocking blacks via robot caricatures.
It is mocking people (blacks if you insist) with CERTAIN CHARACTERISICS. There is nothing to suggest it is mocking all black people.

Let's say it is indeed mocking black "ghetto" youngsters.

Is the message now "No blacks should ever be mocked"?

Are they immune to being poked fun at?

Nice generalization but some racist actually make fun of blacks.

I'll just repeat my earlier point, but put it in bold.

What's your point? That because many racists use this to stereotype all black people, that Bay making two silly robots like this is his take on all black people?

I'm sorry, that argument just doesn't hold water on a logical level.

Yes, if the only representation of a race is a blatant stereotype there is nothing to balance it out. It's bad enough simply including the ugly stereotype but when it's the sole representation of a race it's even worse.

This is like whining if a movie presents nerds as geeky and doesn't balance it out with a group of cool nerds. Do you know how silly that sounds? And how silly it is that you believe that somehow, people will go to TRANSFORMERS and get ideas about a race that they somehow won't be able to "balance out" with the experiences they've already had in the real world, and other movies, and other experiences they will have?

Not in the same context. The twins are complete buffooons. The most ignorant Transformers by far and they also just happen to speak like they're from the ghetto. What a coincidence.

Oh, I see. So there's never, ever been a black movie character who wasn't portrayed as a complete buffoon for comedic purposes?

That's not "allowed" in cinema, now?

This is nothing new. It's just new to Transformers.

The most ignorant Transformers by far and they also just happen to speak like they're from the ghetto. What a coincidence.

Uh, no. It's not a coincidence. It's intentional.

Are you complaining that this portrayal mocks "Ghetto", that it implies everyone from a ghetto is ignorant, or what?

Why not? Transformers with white personalities are mostly represented as noble and dignified.

I'm sorry..."white personalities"?

Please clarify here. Do you mean Transformers voiced by white actors are depicted as noble?

It says to black kids if they speak slang they're complete morons.

Uh...no. It says to audiences that Mudflap and Skids are complete morons. It makes no judgements or implications beyond that, other than the preconceived notions audiences bring to the theatre.

How does it imply that all people who speak slang are complete morons?

That is akin to me saying that the comic book story of The Joker implies that all failed comedians will become mass murderers.

When you take one of the rare things black kids can use to identify with each other and call them idiots in front of their peers it's worse than saying band geeks are promiscuous or preps are arrogant.

Rare things?

Black kids can only identify with each via slang?

So are you now saying that black kids don't have access to many of the same hobbies, passions, etc, as other kids do? That they somehow have to resort to slang to feel connected to each other?

Also, why is making fun of black kids worse than mocking someone for playing an instrument or studying hard or being smart?

And a Transformer movie is no place to make fun of black kids anyway. It's supposed to be a fun giant robot movie. remember???

I don't think it is making fun of all black kids at all.

Tell me:

Do you think someone who is ignorant, rude, crass, and generally unintelligent is someone to be admired by children? Someone they should aspire to be like?

Actually it holds fine. If you use the same stereotypes as a racist then you're message could easily be conveyed as racist. A racist person mocks blacks in a certain manner and the Bay puts it on screen. Well of course it will be seen as racist also.

Here's the problem. I don't go through life worrying about what people will think if they make a series of ridiculous assumptions. I suspect neither does Michael Bay.

The submissive slave stereotype is outdated but the new stereotypes of blacks as ignorant criminals is just as destructive in it's intent.

Uh...I don't believe Skids and Mudflap are portrayed as ignorant criminals. They seem to be portrayed as posers. People who pretend to be like those who are portrayed as ignorant criminals. Because that's what they seem to think is cool.

Because "ghetto" is a generalization embraced by racist you shouldn't toy with that characterization in a blockbuster movie. Especially when representing the dumbest Transformers. Bragging about not reading is not an acceptable stereotype of black characters.

Uh...

No.

A lot of things have been used by racists, hate groups, you name it. Should we not show characters who believe homosexuality is wrong on television or in movies simply because some hate groups use that element in their arguments? Should we not show criminals at all since some people are actually criminals? Hey, let's just tiptoe around everywhere we go lest someone mistake something we say or do as outright racist and hateful.

And how does two robots saying "We don't really read much" imply that all blacks cannot read? It simply implies that these two cannot read.

If the only Asian robot brags about not being much of a driver and speaks with a chinese accent it implies that's how you interpret asians. Same goes for the twins and the implications of black ignorance.

I see.

So since the only man in much of Y: THE LAST MAN is Yorick, an immature, slightly goofy teenager, is that the only way the writer interprets all men, regardless of his far broader life experience?

I fail to see the logic there.

yeah well I hope something offends and bothers you too. I'm sure then someone can rub your face in it.

Oh come on. It'd be hilarious. She could transform from a syrup bottle in Sam's kitchen, and be this tiny little Decepticon who is nevertheless really loud and obnoxious, and says things like "OH NO HE DI'INT" and "OHHHHH, SNAP!". Why stop with just a few stereotypes?

Look. Of course some things bother me.

But not comedic parodies. Real things. Real instances of hatred and racism, that are designed to intentionally hurt and belittle people directly, to limit their rights, freedoms, etc. Not a filmmaker who thinks he's being cool by touching on a popular cultural movement and bought into the mainstream Hollywood idea that mocking every group he can is a good idea.

I'm all for teaching kids what's right and wrong. I don't, however, believe in telling them what they can and cannot have access to in assessing who they are. It should be up to children to choose how they want to act, and to grow up, and come to terms with those parts of themselves. And to get a thicker skin, in many respects.

I would imagine a lot of kids will like these characters. The ones that don't, either they'll see it for the satire it is, or the reality of what's being implied here about the "ghetto" subculture will hit home.

I just realized that instead of answering the original question, I just argued, lol.

No the twins are not racist, I do not see black people when I see the robots, I see............... robots with punk attitudes.:wow:

Lets be careful in here. Discuss this without attacking others....AND DO NOT MAKE STUPID RACIST JOKES AND THEN TRY AND USE THE 'IT WAS ONLY A JOKE' CARD.....it will not work.

Can I see an example of a stupid racist joke so I know what not to do?

I thought they were funny.

They remind me of those suburban white boys who think they're hardass gangsters, but are nothing but ridiculous losers. :yay:

However, black stereotyping is the most problematic within the US, due to relatively recent (in the long term) history and modern day quasi-segregation, troubling criminal profiling habits and poverty (Katrina, anyone?). My God, the south is still something of a nightmare in terms of still lingering resentments. As much as white folks would love to move past this and get on with it, we're still a long ways away from solving the racial tensions and moving past our subtle widespread media saturating the culture with images which simply things for our own comfort. Ultimately it's going to take new generations to help erase these conflicts, but it's gonna take a long time.

No, no it's not. I was born and raised there. The only people with the mentality that racism is such a big issue in the South are Northeners that have spent little to no time in the South. Racism is everywhere, not localized. Even during the civil rights era, racism was still abound in the north and other areas of the nation, just because it wasn't as visual in same way doesn't mean it wasn't just as prevalent.

Why did black actors star in Song of the South?

Way to lose all credibility! Good on you!

Song of the South was an adaptation of stories that belong to the African American community. Black actors starred in it, because they were proud of the work. There is a huge campaign from the African American community for Song of the South to be released on DVD. Disney as a corporation is scared to death to release a classic, for unfounded reasons.

So I didn't read through the whole thread I did however read the quoted article in the initial post and, after just coming home from seeing the movie, I just have to say that is the biggest load of hogwash I think i've ever read in my life. Way to take a single line totally out of context. As others have said the glyphs are an ancient cybertronian language only the Primes can read, the twins even say as much. If the twins are supposedly racist to black people how is Jetfire not racist to british people. By the way I loved the movie.

"British " isn't a race.

I'll say only this before I go see the film(and I'll return after seeing it for my thoughts on this subject), Jar Jar doesn't really fit this conversation. He's very annoying but the "meesa " talk at least in the way he did it doesn't automatically conjur up racist imagery. I've always felt that was reaching. Jazz is relevant only in that he's a Transformer but after that, not so much. Jazz's persona in the first film(and I can't believe NOBODY here has mentioned this) was an attempt by the filmakers of updating his personality for today's viewees while still maintaining a small part of the characterization of the G1 series. Scatman Caruthers played him and as such he sounded like a 30 some odd year old black man. Jazz and Blaster as well were just robots who happened to be voiced by black men. Was there some attempt at making them the "hip black Autobots" ? I think so at times but it was never pressed to the point of racial streotyping. Jazz in the first Transformers was kind of goofy but I felt like he was an updated version of what an "hip black man" is(I guess) supposed to sound like. Grating but ultimately harmless.

But "we don't do much readin'? With a big gold tooth? That's NOT offensive? I bet some of you would say the same thing no matter WHAT they were doing. If the twins were eating a slice of Watermelon while drinking grape soda, playing basketball and rapping...what then? Would it have to go that far to be considered racst for some of you?

I have no agenda against this film. I want to love it. I really do. I love Transformers. I have since i was but a lad of 2 or 3 and will probably continue to love the franchise in some fashion for the rest of my life but some of the things in these films are...too much. Once i see the film, I'll really know what to think of the Twins(context and all). Be back here on Thursday.

I'm black and I just saw the film
and I must say the twins are not racist....they're just stupid as hell. Not funny, just two idiots who do use street slang.

Exactly. They're like those white boys who think they're being cool, but are actually total idiots. :woot:

Jazz in the first Transformers was kind of goofy but I felt like he was an updated version of what an "hip black man" is(I guess) supposed to sound like.

I wouldn't say Jazz was goofy. He at least had a measure of class that the "Twins" lack. It pissed me off that he was killed in the first movie. I don't see any other Autobot that could replace him as second in command. He was a heroic warrior who saw the value of humans (Ironhide didn't care much for them) and watched out for his own (presuading Prime to rescue Bumblebee). I think giving him the ax was a big mistake.

I just finished seeing the movie...AWESOME by the way.

My biggest grip would have to be the Twins. They provided several humorous moments, however, I felt the joke was carried to far at times.

To me, they were far less 'ghetto black' and way more 'inbred ****** redneck hicks'.

Yup...I thought they were inbred, idiotic hicks that use street slang. They can't read a dead language...can any of you read Latin?
