The Van Lente Avengers thread

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH SNAP, Beta Ray Bill! I was just thinking during the second issue that it would make a lot of sense for Bill to get involved in this. It's like DnA are combing my mind for the most awesome thoughts and making them reality. :D :D :D
Which one is the brain of the gang?
Probably the Surfer or Worldmind. Rich still has her in chirping in his ear all the time, and she knows more than the rest of them combined.

I wonder: If this does become a "Cosmic Avengers" team, where would the Nova Corps fit in? Would Rich be pulling triple-duty as a Cosmic Avenger, an on-call Secret Avenger, and the head of the new Nova Corps? Personally, I think it would be much better if the Nova Corps formed kind of like a support staff around these guys. They could handle any of the smaller emergencies as part of their training under Philo while they save the big guns for the 8x8's (presumably bigger than the ones Rich used to handle himself, of course).

Also, if they do become part of the Avengers line, I hope that nets them a better artist. I haven't been particularly impressed with Sepulveda on the first two issues of The Thanos Imperative. He's not bad, but I think I've been spoiled by the likes of Paul Pelletier, Wes Craig, Andrea Di Vito, et al.

Ronan the Accuser as an Avenger... that is a very intriguing thought.

I doubt they'd be set up quite like any of the other Avengers teams if they do indeed become Avengers. I imagine they'd be something more like an international superhero cooperative--Rich representing the Nova Corps (a.k.a. the galaxy's only universally recognized body of law and order), Bill representing Earth, Quasar representing Epoch and the Protector of the Universe position, Gladiator representing the Shi'ar, Ronan representing the Kree, maybe even the Surfer representing Galactus' interests in keeping the universe safe so he can eat regularly. That would be cool. It'd leave a lot of room for conflict between the members, who'd all have their own interests.

Oh I know that, but the people of Earth aren't really aware of it.

Besides, if this does end up being the new Avengers team... I can almost guarentee you it wont' really be an Avengers book in anything but name alone. I can MAYBE see a random Steve Rogers show up with Nova and discuss it and that's it, or maybe Nova himself can just name them and that's that. It'd basically be a trick to get more sales into the Cosmic landscape, which I'm cool with, but I highly doubt that in the end any of these people (save Quasar and Nova) would ever really be remembered as proper Avengers.

Kind of goes with my theory of the team being sort of an intergalactic cooperative. The people of Earth certainly wouldn't consider Ronan or Gladiator heroes, but to their respective civilizations, they most certainly are. Kl'rt was too, until the Skrulls turned on him for getting his ass kicked by the FF so often.

But yeah, I agree, I would kind of consider them "Avengers*"--the "*" meaning "kind of, but not really."

Van Lente is writing WHITE LANTEN CORPs comic! Coming this November to Marvel!

The Dead Avengers WHITE LANTERN CORP! that will emerge from the afterlife include the Swordsmen, Yellowjacket II, Deathcry, Doctor Druid, Captain Mar-Vell and the Vision. "There were a couple other characters on the list that we could choose from, but some are appearing elsewhere in 'Chaos War.' Ares comes to mind as an obvious example," Van Lente explained. "The Sentry is dead, of course, but his death is relatively recent so we don't to overturn that, and to me, part of the fun of this series is seeing some characters we haven't seen in a long time."

Bummed that it's only a mini, but damn, that sounds cool. It figures Deathcry would factor into "Chaos War" somehow, since (aside from the "dead" thing), she was good friends with Hercules back when they were both Avengers.

That's kind of underwhelming given all our expectations about a big addition to the Avengers line, but that's our own collective fault. For what it is, Dead Avengers sounds pretty cool. Two slightly disappointing things: 1) It's a bit sad that Van Lente went with Rita if Scott Lang was his other choice, if only so I could see the awesome costume Scott had when he died again, and 2) Van Lente will be using the incredibly one-note, Lobo-esque portrayal of Deathcry from Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord. But the Vision finally being used for something again basically makes up for whatever nitpicks I might have about other parts of the mini. I'm a big fan of Tom Grummett's art, too.

I'd have Scott Lang come back just to have Cassie finally shut the f*** up. God damn she needs to go away or something.

She'd be even worse when he inevitably has to go back to the realm of the dead. :oldrazz:

Yeah, kind of a disappointment overall, but I still hope the whole Cosmic Avengers will still happen in some form.

I guess technically it is happening. Nova's strike force is basically like a cosmic version of the Avengers. They're a bunch of characters from all walks of life who've banded together to take on a threat--the Cancerverse--greater than any could handle alone.

Yeah, I know, but I doubt they'll stick around and become a centralized team or anything afterward. Though, I guess they could.

Well, we don't know what's happening with the cosmic line in general after The Thanos Imperative. I would much rather see Nova in a series with the new Nova Corps, personally, but I could see them realigning the cosmic line around Guardians and Nova's strike force, since it'd give them two team books and a lot of versatility in the types of stories they could tell.

Well, we know the Guardians won't be back, at least not for awhile, so that just leaves a potential Nova book.

How do we know that? I thought The Thanos Imperative runs through October or November or whatever solicitations we're up to now.

At Comic-Con they said the Guardians would be on a 'break' for an undetermined amount of time after TI ends, I believe

That would be great. But half the people reading comics don't even know the difference between the Avengers' Vision and the Young Avengers' Vision, so I doubt it'll happen.

I mean, what's the point if they'll probably have to die again?

The point is for Van Lente to give us a fun, nostalgia-ridden tale of these former heroes and current corpses being awesome again (and obviously also for Van Lente to get a chance to write them). I'd love for the Vision to come back as well, but I wouldn't hold my breath on any of these characters coming back permanently as a result of this mini.

Hmm, well that's disappointing. I'm not interested in the slightest bit.
