What is it?
A new 'sim' game for the xbox360 that Microsoft is already banking on to become the "next big thing".
Why should I be hyped?
Scroll down and look at those screenshots. Go out and buy Kameo or PDZ for your 360. Look at those screenshots again. Then go play Animal Crossing, and imagine that with a cooler visual flair. That's why.
How do I play it?
Before I begin, I'd like to say that I recognize how bad this genre sounds on paper, but really, you just need to play it to fully understand it. Basically, you play as...no one. You have no "character", you're simply an unseen hand moving about. If you've played Animal Crossing, you'll have a good idea of what to expect, but basically, you're goal is to build your garden to attract new pinata's and to satisfy the ever changing needs of the ones already there, all the while coming up with clever ways to keep the bad pinata's out and unwilling to come back. It could be called a "sandbox" game ala Dead Rising or Oblivion, you simply have far more control over your sandbox here.
How does this game use Xbox Live?
In addition to the usual acheivements and content download (new skins, new garden buildings/tools, new types of pinata's for you to collect/ward off, etc), the game allows people to "observe" your garden from Xbox Live, to "see what you've done with the place". However, as far as anyone outside of Rare knows, that's all they can do, look (and maybe talk if you let them), they can't touch or assist/hinder you in any way. Viva Pinata is strictly a single player only game.
What does the game look like?
Oh, ****ing fantastic, it's easily the best looking game out there. Not on 360, out there period. It has an amazing looking art style that really just makes the whole thing scream 'unique', from the grass thats made to look like paper-mache to simple things like the "hey, it's not photorealistic" color scheme, refreshing for a 360 title. Here, let me show you.
That's unbelievably pretty, no way it's real
It's Real
This looks kiddy
I guess you think it's childish to have fun? **** off and die of aids
I heard this was a crappy cash in on a TV show, any truth to that?
Not unless you're a total idiot. Here's the chain of events:
1) Rare comes up with, designs Viva Pinata, then shows it to Microsoft.
2) Microsoft sees a potential fad, contacts 4Kids entertainment, people responsible for turning pokemon and I think maybe yu gi oh into cults.
3) TV shows and t-shirts are put into products based on the GAME, not the other way around.
When's it come out?
Officially still slated for Christmas season '06, expect to see this delayed until sometime in the Summer of 2007.
