The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski developing 'Sense8'

holy s**t, I'm into the first two eps so far and I didn't even realize that one of the lesbians is Martha Jones from Doctor Who, Freema Agyeman... it's a weird feeling seeing her using a strap-on on her lover, LOL...

Capheus has a sister. he and his mother had to give her away because they didnt have enough food for all 3. Nomi has a blackgirfriend Amanita. wasnt Amanita adopted? what if she is his sister?:cwink:

:wow:. I really have to rewatch this.

I like that their telepathy makes a big world seem smaller and connects people that have nothing to do with each other, so I'm not sure if I would like that.

Was genuinely surprised by the 10th episode that I was hooked to the series. The first 3 or 4 episodes are a whole lot of world building and might not grab people but if you give it a few more, it will. Definitely hope it gets a second season.

Whoa. Interesting theory! Also wouldn't have to worry about the creep factor for that one segment in episode 6 since he wasn't involved.

Niiiiiice find.

I just finished the series. I liked it, a great deal. I think it was full of incredible ideas but it was delivered as a bit of a mess. A lot of story elements the camera hung on and the awesome ideas of the show were left mostly unexplored. It left us with what feels like a decent first half of the season on a network show. I do respect the sort of long term planning for a slow burn, but to sit through 12 hours of these people's lives and only scratch the surface of the cool idea that brought me here in the first place... I feel a bit cheated.

More review, with spoilers:

It's hard to not draw comparisons to Cloud Atlas here. The same idea of connectedness of dispirate races and genders and sexualities is the main touchstone here. And like Cloud Atlas, it seems far more interested in this than the science fiction. What makes this disappointing is the almost ham-fistedness it handles race in, whether the unrealistic yellow face of Cloud Atlas or the hilariously underwhelming take on police brutality ("Cops hate gangbangers." :whatever: ) or the trademark all Asians know kung fu - even orphaned businesswomen, it seems a bit 'did not do the research.' In contrast the way that queer themes were explored was deep, sensitive, and crammed to the brim with cool. It's jarring to see them lead the curve on dealing with one social issue but almost insultingly sub par on race.

Overall I think the Wachowski's are still stuck in the Matrix, and while they have incredible ideas which can be used to explore pretty much everything, they're far more interested in exploring philosophy than science fiction. They don't want to see Neo defeat Smith, they want to see Neo assert the power of choice and die in a way which causes the viewer to think... but the viewer came to see wire-fu, so "WTF Wachowskis!? Matrix 3 is garbage!" Not because it's a poor movie in and of itself, but because it fails to deliver on the premise, or at the very least, the way the premise was marketed.

Sense8, however, is definitely a step in the right direction. It shows that they are willing to move the story forward once they're done playing with their philosophical toys, and the sense8 connections often did actually push the story forward, but they don't feel any need to rush. This leads to a lot of cool moments. The bit with them singing together was just... beautiful. In the last couple episodes, when they sort of team up like 'I got this,' that's when these people start to get dangerous, and thus quite cool. I just hope they don't get bored of cool sci-fi and pull another The Architect type wrinkle.

I agree with other reviewers here that the first few eps were a chore (I was half paying attention and had them playing on the background) but the season did get better and better....

Am looking forward to a season 2 hopefully...

Honestly, I like that we only scratched the surface. I like it when TV shows have a slow burn with their mysteries.

Anything?

Geometric-Centroid is roughly between Algeria - Mali; Timbuktu?

Although if you put Riley back in Iceland, it places it in the middle of the Atlantic.

What about on a globe?

Flight 815?
Kadath?

#sense8 hints for the future: why was Jonas in San Francisco? Why was Angelica in Chicago? And why was Metzger suddenly flying to Chicago?

More #sense8 riddles: why would Yrsa say Angelica worked for Whispers? Isn't it curious that Whispers said "you're coming home" to Angelica?
Hmm...

I absolutely LOVE this show. Binge watched the whole thing over the past few days and ive been telling pretty much everyone I know to check it out. It's true that the first few episodes are a bit of a slow burn but once it gets going, DAMN. It reminds me of the first season of Heroes, only better (hopefully season 2 of Sense8 doesn't have a drop-off in quality like that show did). All of the main characters are great and I love how each one can step in with his/her skills when they are needed.

Also, Sun and Wolfgang might be the biggest badasses on TV. And Whispers is a loathesome prick who needs to DIE DIE DIE, haha.

Saw episode 1, this is a challenging show.
Challenging is a good word for it, but I actually think that's the best thing about it. I think episode 4 was when I stopped being bothered by the unconventional pacing and embraced the show. I'm glad I did because it's one of the best first seasons I've seen in a while.

What was challenging for me was the large number of characters and plots to care about at once. It's a lot of moving parts. I don't deal with a huge deluge of information but I stuck with it for various reasons.

Just curious if anyone else is watching Velvet on Netflix? It stars Miguel Angel Silvestre/Lito as the son of a couture fashion store owner who falls in love with a seamstress set during the 50's in Spain. It's in spanish but they have english subtitles. I'm finding it highly enjoyable it's got a lot of drama, humor, and charm and would definitely recommend it if your a fan of the actor.

Let's get some discussion going.

1) I really loved the plots in Nairobi and in Seoul, they had my attention, but the plot in India was the least interesting to me. Is that just due to my own mindset or did you guys have similar preferences?

2) The Korean senste, the hot chick in Mexico that hung out with the gay guys, Tuppence Middleton ... all gorgeous, and not the standard gorgeousness we see from Hollywood. They look different, I think that adds to the appeal? I'm not sure.

3) I think the vaginal birth imagery worked well. I have seen that in any medium before but it fits. I waa grossed out and squeamish at furst but then I settled down as I consciously and rationally realized that this is beautiful and not gross and I was letting my learned biases get in the way.

When the music is playing at the opera house it is the first time that all eight of them are together and accepting of what they are, so in a way this cluster is being born. So simultaneously we see eight births, this is called symbolism. I am unclear on something though. Are we seeing the birth to a new cluster, or were these flashbacks to when this cluster was being born?

4) The fight choreography was great. My favourite fight scenes were the ones in Nairobi when he beats up those goons who kidnapped Kabaka, and the final fight scene in Germany.

5) The Wachowskis are getting a lot of love for this but I want to point put that JMS' DNA is also all over this work. He has done telepathy before, in Babylon 5, and a lot of the same issues are coming up. JMS understands something other scifi writers do not, something pretty ****ing obious: that telepathy would transform human relations. We see maany of the same plot elements, rest of society fears telepaths, some turncoat telepaths hunt the rest, the ability to take control of other people's minds, and sex among telepaths being the peak of sex.

Also presentt is a ambitious representation, JMS in Babylon 5 went for a very mixed cast. Women, etc. had stronger roles.

JMS wrote aboit Superman Earth One that in doing research for it he learned about how much the character means to people in underprivileged positions. Then in this show we see vans painted like Van Dam aand Batman, we see a little African girl say wonder woman is her hero.

6) In an age when people are posting gay rainbows on facebook ... let us take a moment of pause to reflect on what a great aachievement it is that gay sex and even transsexual sex were shown as loving and kinky in an American show with high production value.

7) I think Riley was my favourite character.

8) I like how this was directed. Directors were assigned to locations and not to specific episodes. It gave a consistent feel.

I loved seeing the different locations in general. I wasn't as interested in India at first since a plot revolving around marriage seemed so typical. But I grew to really like Kala and the Bollywood-esque scene was great. It got pretty interesting when it addressed religious/political tensions. I thought the stuff in Germany was the least interesting, but I also thought Kala made Wolfgang more interesting.
2) The Korean senste, the hot chick in Mexico that hung out with the gay guys, Tuppence Middleton ... all gorgeous, and not the standard gorgeousness we see from Hollywood. They look different, I think that adds to the appeal? I'm not sure.
I think I agree? A lot of the Sensates and their supporting cast were unconventional by Hollywood's standard. But god damn if Lito isn't the sexiest man in the world...

3) I think the vaginal birth imagery worked well. I have seen that in any medium before but it fits. I waa grossed out and squeamish at furst but then I settled down as I consciously and rationally realized that this is beautiful and not gross and I was letting my learned biases get in the way.

The birth scene has definitely remained with me the most. It was as graphic as the birthing videos they made us watch in high school biology. I was squeamish but then I felt like I shouldn't be grossed out by this, and should be grossed out by violence instead. It was emotionally powerful as well. Some of the Sensates had such happy births. Which directly contrasts Nomi's birth as we see, but not hear, her mother say Michael. And of course it ended dramatically with Riley's tragic backstory.

I'm pretty sure it was flashbacks to the cluster being born since we see the actress playing Nomi's mother.
4) The fight choreography was great. My favourite fight scenes were the ones in Nairobi when he beats up those goons who kidnapped Kabaka, and the final fight scene in Germany.
Anything with Sun was great too. She was super useful haha.

Cool! Good to know. Sounds like it was a great combination of behind the screen talent.

I loved the exploration of telepathy. Seeing Lito on Sun's period! What an inventive show.

6) In an age when people are posting gay rainbows on facebook ... let us take a moment of pause to reflect on what a great aachievement it is that gay sex and even transsexual sex were shown as loving and kinky in an American show with high production value.
Not only that, but the sensate telepathy experience turns these characters pseudo-pansexual and polyamorous on some level. Or at least situates them far from the mainstream hetero and homo categories. Which I think is amazing.

7) I think Riley was my favourite character.
Why? I think she's one of my least favourites. Her backstory was very sad, but she was the least engaging for me. And she didn't contribute any skill to the group. Maybe season 2?

It's hard to pick a favourite. I feel biased towards Lito since I'm gay and dating a Latino haha. I also really liked Nomi. And then probably Sun and Capheus. But they were all pretty great.

8) I like how this was directed. Directors were assigned to locations and not to specific episodes. It gave a consistent feel.
I didn't know it was organized like that! The show generally had such high production values in its various locales. It feels kinda like Lost, but even better.

Well, I think I should be liking the stuff in India. I was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home, went to that kind of school, so this conflict between religion and reality should resonate with me. I'm an astronomer in real life, she is a pharmacologist I think, which amplifies the conflict since pharmacology (all science) requires a mentality and psychology that is not consistent with traditional religion. There is further conflict to the pansexual, egalitarian themes of the show that is unstated since traditional religion is almost always heteronormative. I don't actually know about hinduism, but I'll assume it is without actually checking.

So in spite of these similarities and the automatic relevance to the plot and themes, I was mostly bored. The guy she's supposed to marry ... I guess he seems like a nice guy and he's well-groomed, but mostly we know he's great because all of the other interesting women say they would love to marry him. I don't feel it though. There might be more tension if they had given the groom character more material.

I agree that the Germany/India link between Wolfgang and Kala elevates both of them.

Re: Wolfgang (Max Riemelt), I wonder if huge cock was part of the casting call?

You went to a better high school.

Yes, I need to watch the series again. There are a lot of details which are easy to miss. Plus I was watching it while doing other things.

Anything with Sun was great too. She was super useful haha.
I liked her a lot and she was awesome, but there was an annoying voice in the back of my head problematizing the fact the Asian character had the best martial arts skills. I'm glad they added more to her, she has a warm relationship with her trainer, with her mother, she's well-trained at her job and very efficient, and she has a commanding presence. The way she busted into that strip club and told her brother to get the **** up was impressive. The warm, compassionate relationship we saw with her mother and her trainer helped us believe how she behaved in the prison, where she helped the other women out.

Why? I think she's one of my least favourites. Her backstory was very sad, but she was the least engaging for me. And she didn't contribute any skill to the group. Maybe season 2?
I don't mind that she doesn't have skill relevant to season one's plot. Presumably sensate assignment randomly samples the human population, so you can end up with just about anybody, knowing my frequently bad luck in life if it was me I'd probably end up with Dr. Phil in my cluster. Well, he' a different age so no, but you get the idea.

I might just like her because she was incredibly beautiful, and she's my kind of woman too, smart, talented, but also reserved. I can also appreciate sad stories though and I think her entire backstory is really sad, she's lost her mom, she lost her husband, she held her baby as he died in her arms, and her bad luck continued as the guy she was seeing in London turned out to be a complete psychopath. By linking up with Gorski she is learning and choosing to live, when everything in her life up until that point should have inclined her to withdraw and not to invest in people.

I have other positive predispositions toward her.
- I dig techno trance "DJs" like Armin van Buuren, Dash Berlin, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, etc;
- The blue streak in her hair is a nice little visual touch that adds continuity to the show, since Nomi's girlfriend also has a blue streak in her hair (this is minor);
- Good use of Icelandic cinematography. Hollywood has gone to Iceland a lot in the past few years because it's gorgeous there: Oblivion, Pometheus, Interstellar all use Iceland for shooting. We saw something different here, they contributed to the dialogue of beautiful Hollywood Iceland, lol.

It's hard to pick a favourite. I feel biased towards Lito since I'm gay and dating a Latino haha. I also really liked Nomi. And then probably Sun and Capheus. But they were all pretty great.
How could anybody not like Capheus?

;-)

There was a good use of lens flares. The cinematography looked nice. Just a huge amount of colour in this show.

Apart from the uncomfortable butt secs, orgies, and woman during labor/delivery, this was a great 1st season.

I just finished watching this today and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic. I was skeptical at first but with each episode my attention kept increasing. It was one of those few shows where the season ends and I'm dying for more! Can't wait for season 2. Some of my favorite parts:

Daniela
Amanita
Wolfie
Lito's boyfriend
The births scene
The orgy

I hope in season 2 we get more of the mythology without sacrifing the character development. I was so invested in all of them. And I want more of them to meet in person!

Yeah, I love all of the main characters. I can't wait to see where this goes next.

Also, question for everyone... who do you think is the hottest cast member? I asked my girlfriend this question and her response was, "ALL of them." I'd be inclined to agree, haha.
