lol going by Jason Isaacs’ accent, his character apparently grew up somewhere between Alabama and Baltimore.
Parker Posey seems to be going buckwild with her dialect too. Wonder if it’s intentional.
Yeah, the Ratliffs are a well-to-do family from North Carolina, and it's very intentional.
Long story short, Victoria, the Ratliff matriarch (Parker Posey's character), attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill; her daughter Piper is currently a senior at the same school. If you rewatch the first episode, you'll notice that Victoria continuously harps on about "
Tar Heel," which is essentially a nickname for UNC. Her husband Timothy, on the other hand, went to Duke, as did Saxon (their oldest son). Youngest son Lachlan got accepted into both schools. The problem is that both parents are pressuring him to pick between their respective alma maters, and he doesn't know what the @#$% to do! There's also a basketball rivalry between the UNC Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils that goes back over 100 years. And if that's not enough for you, there are meta connections to the Michael Peterson story! The Peterson blended family, who resides in Durham, North Carolina, includes two daughters—Martha and Margaret—who share the same last name as the fictional Ratliffs. Actors Posey and Schwarzenegger had major roles in
The Staircase miniseries based on the true crime docuseries about Peterson as well.
That's the gist of it. I mean, knowing this stuff won't vastly improve your viewing experience, but it definitely makes Posey's scenes a little funnier and also heightens the tension between Lachlan and his parents.
