That being said, in this previous season, the MOTW stuff was the best.

That's been the case with this show from S3 onward, imo. But some of those old MOTW eps are some of my all-time favorite episodes of television. They were more than good enough to make-up for the weak mytharc eps. Well, up to S7, at least.

The X-Files Season 11 Writers Revealed: Who's Back? Who's Missing?

Most notably, Carter will once again reunite with former producers Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong, each of whom were responsible for writing and directing one of Season 10’s six episodes. (Darin Morgan’s installment, “Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster,” was widely viewed as the revival’s strongest outing.)

The quartet will be joined by relative newcomers Gabe Rotter (who served as a writers assistant on Season 9), Benjamin Van Allen (a writers assistant on Season 10) and Brad Follmer (Carter’s personal assistant during Season 8 and 9, and not to be confused with the character Brad Follmer, played by Cary Elwes in Season 9).

Fox has taken the hint: The X-Files is going to largely avoid its wildly complex mythology episodes next season.

The return of the sci-fi hit for the 2017-18 season contains 10 episodes. A full of eight of them will be stand-alone episodes, Fox entertainment chairman David Madden promises. The move comes after last year’s revival received hugely split reviews, with the mythology episodes getting slammed by critics while the stand-alone mysteries were praised.

“We’re really proud of last season,” Madden says. “We had the responsibility to explain to the audience what had happened in the intervening seven or eight years. We’re free from that responsibility this time and can just plunge in and tell the stories. We’re having a lot of fun doing it. Eight of the episodes will be stand-alone stories so they will be classic ‘Mulder and Scully plunging into new adventures.'”

I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with it if they just wrapped up the mythology storyline. I know it's a convoluted mess at this point but they really need to just tie up the loose ends and get it out of the way before moving back to the MotW stuff just so it's at least not there anymore. I had a lot of issues with the last movie and the last season but my biggest issue was they had two chances to just finish the mythology arc and they didn't.

So, why did you want to do this season?

Gillian Anderson: Because it felt like it wasn’t over. It didn’t feel like we necessarily deliver everything the fans were expecting of us last time, and so it was that.

How much will you miss her if this is really it for you?

Gillian Anderson: I don’t know. You may need to talk to me in a few years about that once I finally shut the door. You know, there’s always been this “maybe one more” thing hanging over, but when the door is finally shut, call me up and ask me that question again.

The X-Files Eyes Robert Patrick for Season 11 Encore as Doggett

We want to believe this will work out: The X-Files is trying to get Robert Patrick back for Season 11.

Series creator Chris Carter tells TVLine exclusively that the Scorpion actor — who portrayed Agent John Doggett in Seasons 8 and 9 — was actually slated to appear in one of Season 11’s early installments. “I actually wrote him into an episode,” Carter reveals. “But then I found out he wasn’t going to be available to us [because of Scorpion] so I had to write him out of the episode… Scorpion is his first priority.”

Carter then cryptically adds, “That’s not to say you won’t see him this season…”

For his part, Patrick confirms to TVLine that it was a scheduling conflict with Scorpion that torpedoed his original encore, but says he’s “game” to make another go at it. (The X-Files is about to start production on Episode 6 of its 10-episode order.)

A Doggett comeback makes sense considering that his former partner, Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish), was revealed to be in cahoots with Cigarette Smoking Man in the Season 10 cliffhanger. Gish has already signed on to return in Season 11, and Carter says her mysterious alliance with CSM will be addressed “in an interesting way.”

I've noticed that FOX has put up all of the original series on demand, which is nice, considering Netflix dropped it.

Not long now!

Watched through the season 10 mini-series again over the last week, really enjoyed it. Not the best the show's ever been, but it's solid - love the whole twist of it being the government all along too. Case-of-the-week eps were really solid too.

Can't wait to see what they've cooked up for 11. More episodes is going to be good too, more breathing room for the narrative stuff.

Eh, I don't know. Them saying the aliens are not coming kind of takes some steam out of the show. That was one of the biggest angles of the show.

I don't know, the whole "lets make the season finale a dream" is kind of bull.

I'd feel some sort of way about that ending if I wasn't sure that it was just a retcon that will itself be retconned by season's end.

Not a great premiere overall, but I'm not here for more mythology anyway. Give me those stand-alones.
