IMO, the landing is a good place to switch it. If the 2nd floor is carpet, and the bottom is wood, then it's got to have a break somewhere. I think it would look worse if they were all carpet to the wood floor at the bottom, or all wood to the carpet at the top.

I've seen it done both ways, but most of the newer houses in my area lean towards all carpet on the stairs or all wood on the stairs, no inbetween.
