I was wondering if any of you would "welcome" somewhat of a change in the history of the Waynes, that would involve Thomas Wayne. What if... he too was at one point a "masked hero" like his son later becomes?

I'm just brainstorming here, but let's say he would've been more of an Arsene Lupin type hero that would've taken from the rich and corupted to give to the poor and could've done this while wearing a mask ( like a wolf for example ) It would allow the creators of Batman to show us what Gotham City looked like before Bruce was born and maybe even showing us the birth or childhood of some important characters, whether good or bad.

... any takers?

Could make for an interesting Elseworlds/What If? type thing I guess.

Thomas Wayne was in fact the first batman :woot:

That's out of continuity and for good reason. It seems like Thomas was a hero in that he tried to make living better in Gotham, but he couldn't do it effectively so Bruce tried a direct method. Having Thomas done the same thing makes Batman seem like less of a hero and more like an heir.

Believe me, I am ALL for Thomas NOT being a hero, I don't like it. But in Face the Face, when Batman battles his nightmare due to the Scarecrow, he's fighting his father who is wearing the costume in the above picture. I never really got why he was wearing that costume, ESPECIALLY if he wasn't a hero.

In "Face The Face" he battled that batman. So perhaps it is back!

Thomas Wayne was a hero for Gotham. A doctor who saved lives and used his money to try and improve the city. I think that it is pretty heroic in light of what he faced during the times we see in various flashbacks etc.

As indicated being an heir loses something -- originality. :yay:

"The Untold Legend of the Batman" revolved around Thomas Wayne being the first Batman. It was an interesting read for its time, but the idea itself seems pretty inspid compared to the history that's been woven into the Batman mythos nowadays.

Yeah, but he wasn't REALLY the first Batman. Just wore that costume to a party and ended up doing something in it. He wasn't one of the old mystery men or anything.

I don't really mind that. It doesn't really impact the history much, just an odd anecdote suggesting "destiny" as it always seems to pop up in comic books. But to have had Thomas Wayne be an actual masked crimefighter would just be plain ****in' stupid. I hate that sort of ****.

I don't know about that, but I always had an idea swirling around my head of a story of how Thomas and Martha Wayne got together...

And if you're interested in Gotham City before Bruce was born, I'd recommend reading Year Two--where Batman faced a masked man who was a murderous vigilantie back in the day known as The Reaper. Also, it's been said that the golden age Green Lantern worked in Gotham City.

Would one of those men either be Lew Moxon, or be associated with Lew Moxon? I'm a bit ignorant of some of the older stories.

Can anyone find a bigger picture of Thomas Wayne in the suit?

If Thomas Wayne was such a brave man and a fighter that he took on that armed man and his hoodlums then, then why couldn't he have disarmed Joe Chill?

Bloody 60's nonsense.
