Too early to say, but my inclination is to say "yes". What little we've seen of Steppenwolf suggests he is, at best, a little more powerful than any one JLAer. Nothing to compare with destroying Mjolnir, or single-handedly slaughtering an army of Einherjar.

Yeah Hela destroying Mjolnir with one hand is pretty badass, I hope she does more large scale attacks like in the shot vs the Valkyries. Einherjar get slaughtered in every movie they are not impressive at all.

THOR RAGNAROK

Opening Weekend - 120M
Domestic - 300M
Foreign - 600M
Worldwide = 900M
So this was my early prediction and a optimistic one at that. It had a healthy dose of wishful thinking supported but the gigantic buzz generated from that first epic "Teaser Trailer" also taking into account previous box office results and the idea that this movie was going to be a completely different beast all together at the box office. With an amazing talented cast, great director, awesome characters and incredible storylines... add to that the insane amount of action, humor and heart that a Taika movie is sure to have.

Now and after watching the fantastic "Official Trailer" and again the amount of buzz generated from it, i can optimistically say that the prediction above is no longer only a "optimistic one". I feel more and more that this movie is gonna be a box office juggernaut. I am happy with the prediction as it is right now let's see what the future of this spotless marketing campaign holds and if it's even possible to dream with other results at the box office.

I think that this movie will make around a little more than 800 million. With it's cast of characters, it has the potential to hit the over 1 billion club, but it's 100 minute runtime makes me think it will be mostly action with little character development. Looking at the Nolan Batman movies and the successful billion dollar MCU movies, almost all had time to develop good characterization. I think fans want to know character motives, just make them interesting. It's too bad with so many new characters being introduced to the MCU that this movie will move along so quick. I just finished reviewing Captain America Civil War and still enjoy it like the first time I watched it. It was well balanced with story and great action scences. All the major players had more than a few shining moments. The movie was well over 2 hours with no drag. I figured Marvel Studios was going the same route with a movie entitled Thor "Ragnorock" but I'm sure they have their reasons for such a short runtime.

Gamma Ra, we don't know what Ragnarok's run time is yet. As discussed in the main thread recently, the movie is still deep in post production and Waititi has admitted there are a few different cuts floating around, one definite cut with a run time as long as 2 and a half hours. He gave an interview to MTV on the same day as the Collider interview that pretty much directly contradicted what he said about the 100 minute run time, so basically we don't know yet and we won't know until the movie is complete and the official run time is released.

I hope you're right Finarfiniel, 2 hours and 30 minutes is what I was thirsting for. I haven't seen the MTV video, but in the Comic-Con interview he seemed certain about the 100 minute runtime. He even talked about all the great footage that didn't make the final cut.

Here you go :yay:

From that interview it sounds like it's very much undecided at this stage. But who freaking knows with Taika Waititi, anyone who's ever spent more than 5 minutes at his twitter knows to take everything he says with an extra large pinch of salt. :funny:

Thanks a mil.

From that footage, it sounds like they have three possible cuts to use. A 2 and a half-hour, a 2 hour or a 100 minute cut. I hope they go with the longest cut as there are way too many exceptional character actors in this film. I'd love to see them all have a chance to shine.

Use all 3 back to back. I'll be happy to sit through over 6 hours of Ragnarok goodness. :yay:

They're not going to use the longest cut so don't get your hopes up, Taika is not a fan of long films. Two hours is the longest we can hope for, it's not going to be over two hours period.

I also think that the movie is not going to be over 120 minutes/2 hours. With credits and some extra scenes, post credit... it should end up at around just under 120 minutes. My final guess would be 115 minutes/1 hour and 55 minutes. "Short" and sweet. It all depends on what the vision of the director really is and how he is gonna tell his story. If Taika Waititi feels that the sweet spot for the movie is under 2 hours then I'll trust him to make he right decision.

A shorter cut should also help the box office numbers since it will allow for more screenings per day.

This is looking amazing and it has a lot of the GA very excited about it.

To me, $800M is the floor for this!

I'll take two hours over an hour and forty minutes if that's the case.

I was never one to believe that the length of a movie affected it's box office. To me it always depended on how captivating a movie was. If it's good people get absorbed in the film. As I mentioned before, most billion dollar movies are two hours or more.

Yeah Taika said in an interview that the best stories don't have to be very long. He also said the movie moves at a clip and isn't going to be very long.

This is the interview in which he made that quote. What's interesting is that he answered is different in the clip above on the same day.

My contention to the shorter version is that Marvel Studios has a better chance making a billion dollars with a well scripted and acted movie over 2 hours long. The highest grossing billion dollar movies are two hours or more.

Not gonna happen.

Marvel must be pissed off that Ruffalo is out "protesting" and pissing off half of America spouting his political nonsense this close to Thor Ragnarok. Not the PR they need right now. They might need to move to make Hulk Bannerless in the future and get Ruffalo the hell out of the MCU. Reading stuff on Facebook right now and he's needlessly turning off a lot of potential box office.

Early and long range box office predictions from Box Office Pro put's the opening weekend at 100M and a Domestic total of 250M. I think it's an underestimation for TR and as the movie draws closer to the release date those numbers will invariably increase considerably. I'm sure of it... the hype will just keep on building and if the WOM and first reviews are good then this movie is gonna do some serious business.

Yeah, those figures are definitely too low, especially the OW figure. But like you say, it's only an early estimate that will very likely increase as the hype builds over the next couple of months.

I can see this film doing between 130-150 million the opening weekend.
