every review I read is that it's a 'hilarious comedy'.

Not sure if that's -good or bad?

Once you get in the mid $950ms plus, might as well make an all out push for the billion dollar mark.

After ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Crashed, Leave It To ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ To Save Autumn B.O. With $100M+ Opening

October is going to be a sluggish month at the box office. Many were hoping that Alcon Entertainment/Sony’s Blade Runner 2049 would take us to a higher ground: Its advance ticket sales, Blade Runner 2049 was outpacing previous record October openers Gravity and The Martian, and before its debut, some tracking services had the film near $50M.

But with the domestic box office still 4.7% behind last year with $8.3 billion, if we’re going to beat last year’s record $11.4B, it will have to start with Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok who’ll pass the baton to Warner Bros.’/DC’s Justice League who’ll then pass to Disney/Pixar’s Coco and then finally Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Thor Ragnarok, the third in the series, hit tracking this morning, and it’s looking at a $100M-$110M start per industry figures with enormous strength among the four quadrants: Very strong with families, Hispanics and African Americans. Thor: Ragnarok in tracking has an enormous 85% in total awareness, 29% in unaided (those polled say it’s a movie they want to see without being prompted on the title, that number is huge), 61% definite interest, and 24% first choice (when you’re in the double digits at that level, that’s excellent). A $100M start would be huge for the threequel, beating its previous chapter, Thor: The Dark World‘s, $85.7M November opening four years ago. Such projections this far out always come with a footnote because when a pic arrives this strong, it’s hard to determine how high it will go. Even if the domestic marketplace turns wonky, a $90M opening for Thor: Ragnarok wouldn’t be so bad.

The Thor franchise started off with Paramount distributing the movie under their deal with Marvel, opening the first installment to $65.7M (and a final $181M) in May 2011. When Disney took over Marvel, they pushed this franchise’s numbers up even more with $85.7M debut and $206.4M final stateside. Thor: Ragnarok is the third Marvel title to play in the November corridor following Thor: The Dark World and last year’s Doctor Strange ($85M, $232.6M). Together the first two Thor movies have made over $1.09 billion at the global B.O.

Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn gave the film a rave review, saying on Facebook, “I don’t think any film of the modern era has captured the bat**** crazy fun of 80’s classics like Flash Gordon and Buckaroo Banzai as well as Taika Waititi has here. I felt like I was fourteen watching a magical VHS tape that exploded into something grand. It’s the most colorful of all Marvel films — I mean, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is practically sepia-tone in comparison — and it’s also the funniest.”

Deadline saw Thor: Ragnarok on Tuesday night and it truly is a ton of fun in the Guardians of the Galaxy-kind of way, far from the moody tones of Thor: The Dark World. In the threequel, [BLACKOUT]Thor’s sister[/BLACKOUT], Hela (Cate Blanchett) takes over Asgard and paving the way for the planet’s Ragnarok aka its apocalypse. She has crushed Thor’s hammer to bits and the hero is stranded on the colorful planet Sakaar where he is forced to fight in gladiator battles, his first being against the Hulk. With Hulk’s help and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Thor looks to make his way back to Asgard.

Sad how badly BR did. But yes hopefully Ragnarok can clean up.

Yeah, I've seen some crazy spoilers out there for Ragnarok so anyone who wants to avoid that kind of thing should tread more carefully than with other films. Some of these places could give better warnings though I think.

Uppdate 20 days before release:

Opening day / Friday - 440 tickets sold out of 2105 available. (21% of tickets)
Saturday - 342 tickets sold out of 2105 available. (16%)
Sunday - 116 tickets sold out of 1684 available. (7%)

Opening Weekend totals: 898 IMAX tickets sold out of 5894. (15%)
Uppdate: 15 days before release.

Opening day / Friday - 499 tickets sold out of 2105 available. (24% of tickets.)
Saturday - 391 tickets sold out of 2105 available. (19%)
Sunday - 184 tickets sold out of 1684 available. (11%)

Opening Weekend totals: 1074 IMAX tickets sold out of 5894. (18%)

Those positive reactions definitely boosted more people to buy tickets.

What is that for? US IMAX sales?

It's for the IMAX theatre here in Sweden.

Oh gotya. I was thinking the numbers sounded a bit low for US lol.

I hope one of those is your ticket. ;)

I guess this is very good from the Deadline article.

I think a $100M o/w is actually a little conservative, I can definitely see it bringing in more than that with how much hype there is for the film right now. People are really excited about Ragnarok, 85% in total awareness! That's pretty incredible.

In addition Dark World has hurt this franchise. That was a crashing bore of a movie.

Oh, it's you again. Aren't you getting a little bored of being completely wrong all the time?

TDW will in no way hurt this movie, the hype for Ragnarok has been off the charts so far, and trying to deny that just proves that you're blatantly ignoring facts to suit your own silly little narrative.

Edit: I also love how you've chosen to quote a post that was made way over a year ago, yet again completely ignoring everything that has happened since the teaser trailer was released and Ragnarok's prospects changed drastically.

^^ Ignore that guy. All he does is bait folks in the Marvel threads. SMH.

Anyway, early tracking hitting (100-110) million three weeks out is excellent. Plus that first choice number is crazy good.

The movie is still more than 3 weeks away so no concrete projections can be made but I see this one opening at around (112-115 million) right nao. But Ragnarok has been able to sustain an enormous interest/hype on social media platforms and that does suggest that we might see a breakout in a big way. So can't rule out a bigger increase from TDW. Right nao I have Ragnarok increasing (32-36)% over TDW (IM2 to IM3). The initial hype certainly makes a case for an increase similar or at least closer in proximity to Vol 2 from GotG. So 125 million OW isn't too far fetched and that would be a great start for the movie.

I'm positive that my (112-115) million early prediction will be achieved and it will be improved upon release.

Forgot to mention it in the earlier post but a shout-out to HammerDown for blacking out that spoiler part. I probably would have been pissed if I knew what was in that spot. Thanks to HD.

I see you replied to HD's post so yeah, tough luck m8. There is no escaping the spoiler tagged parts or the blacked out parts when you try to directly reply to someone's quote. If it is indeed a big spoiler, then Deadline screwed up. They should have been much more careful with stuff like that.

It's a pretty damn big spoiler, it ruins one of the big hidden revelations in the film. If I hadn't already known I would have been super pissed at Deadline.

I can see this doing 140-150 million opening weekend since Civil War did 179 million.

I thought they would be ultra-professional on well established sites like that. All you need are warnings and then people who wish to can avert their eyes (idiots like me will still blunder through of course).
