Thor Ragnarok vs Aquaman

Which one was the best?

Look at the movie in question. It's more a celebration of Blanchett than Blanchett as Hela, really.

That doesn't make any sense. Blanchett is playing Hela, so its a celebration of Hela since Blanchett brought her to life so well. If the performance was crap, then it wouldn't matter who was playing the role. Good actor or not, crap is still crap.

The likes of Jared Leto's Joker is proof of that. He didn't get celebrated just because it was Oscar winning Leto playing Joker. He gave a poor performance. Blanchett didn't.

This pretzel logic is basically proving my point.

You mean since you last visited the Aquaman forum.

If you honestly think Wilson has garnered as much praise as Blanchett then I don’t know what to tell you.

I’m not even trying to debate you about who’s better, I’m saying it’s odd to mock an opinion that is more or less common.

Wilson delivered a "one-note" performance, while Blanchett was the cat's meow as an underused Hela? This is rich.

Wilson's snoozy performance isn't even remotely comparable to Blanchett's. She managed to create an extremely beloved and memorable villain even up against relatively too little screen time and fairly generic villain motivations and dialogue through sheer talent, swagger and charisma. She looked like she was having the time of her life in Ragnarok, whereas Wilson looked like he was struggling to stay awake throughout most of Aquaman. There was no effort there to give Orm any real personality, whereas Hela bursts with personality in every frame, right down to the way that Blanchett moves and gestures.

In short:

I voted for Aquaman even though I knew Ragnarok would be winning the polls. The way I look at it is in terms of writing and the overall script I definitely think Ragnarok is superior as well as in the comedy department, but in terms of sheer epicness I think Aquaman has it beat. I honestly love both movies, but my god nothing in Ragnarok comes close to that final battle in Aquaman for me which was just on a whole other level IMO.

What does Jared Leto have to do with Patrick Wilson? Nothing.

I never mentioned Wilson. I was talking about Blanchett. You might have spotted her name several times in my post, and in your post that I quoted. So not sure where you got Wilson from.

You never mentioned Wilson. You mentioned Leto. Nobody was discussing Leto. So I'm not sure where you got Leto from.

The bias is strong with this one.

Its called making an analogy to the comment you were making about Blanchett. Perhaps you've heard of analogies. They're very useful in discussions to make a point.

If you'd actually read my post you might have understood this and saw the relevance to your false assertion about Blanchett in Raganork, instead of asking what it has to do with Wilson (never even mentioned or anything quoted about him) or Leto.

Oh, yeah? Watch this. :hehe:

Hell, may as well push in the Ace.

Aww, bless. You tried. :hehe:

Not for you though, right? Clearly.

Of course I'm biased, towards the movie and the performance that I prefer. This thread is literally asking us to compare the two films and performances, which is exactly what I'm doing.

Yes, I love analogies. Actually, I'm more interested in hearing how you liked Aquaman. :D

I found it very mediocre. Visually very impressive, but the story and characters were predominantly bland and forgettable. Not a bad movie. Just a very average one. But definitely a step up from all previous DCEU offerings apart from WW.

Mjolnir took the words right out of my mouth.
Aquaman was only able to come out and be as crazy as it was because of Guardians and Ragnarok, so it’s a pretty fair comparison I think. More so than the first Thor, which is almost a decade old at this point and feels safe and small by comparison to the superhero movies of today.

Ragnarok is like a fine wine. It was great when it came out in 2017 and it’s still one of the best blockbusters of the past decade in 2019. It doesn’t get enough credit for actually having a central message and point of view on colonialism and immigration in favor of people just writing it off as a silly comedy and nothing more.

Eh. Still think it’s not entirely fair to compare a third movie in a trilogy, backed up by a decade of a successful shared universe, with a first movie, coming off the back of two hopelessly inept shared universe films. Stacks the decks, somewhat.

Strikes me that this thread may have been set up for Aquaman to fail, which it is going to when put up against Ragnarok.

Aww, bless. You tried.

Ragnarok's a pretty good score. I'm a Devo fan (since before you were born, probably), but I like Aquaman's score better. And Black Manta's theme tsunami's anything in the former's. Sorry.

But your steadfastness is cute as hell.

You can show bias without dropping a wholesale dis. Your friends here won't abandon you. And if they do, you'll find new ones.

Sorry to hear you didn't like Wilson. I think he's one of the highlights of the film. Surprised you didn't comment on the action choreography or score. Both rock..

I noticed down in the Aquaman forum you remarked it's a "big, dumb movie." I'm curious how Aquaman is, but Ragnarok is not.

Yes, I got that. :funny:

You're posting your opinion, and I'm posting mine. This is a message board after all, it's kinda what it's here for. There's no need to be condescending, all that does is prove that you don't have much confidence in your own argument.

You think me saying that I thought Wilson's performance was poor is a 'wholesale dis'? Really? Do you ever read critics reviews, per chance? If you don't, I wouldn't suggest that you start because if you're that sensitive over another person's opinion of an actor's performance in a film I don't think you could handle it.

Who's being condescending?

Not just Wilson. Going by your other posts, it doesn't seem like you found much to like about Aquaman, but everything to like about Ragnarok, down to the "freaky circle." The funny thing is, I had the same reaction to Ragnarok that some of you had to Aquaman, i.e. some great visuals paired with a jumbled, tonally inconsistent story. Different strokes, I guess.

Do you ever read critics reviews, per chance? If you don't, I wouldn't suggest that you start because if you're that sensitive over another person's opinion of an actor's performance in a film I don't think you could handle it.

Who's being sensitive? Break it up with a little decaf, sister. I'll like your post, anyway. LOL.
