The FBI did it. J. Edgar Hoover was a racist and a McCarthyist. MLK was his prime target. MLK's family won a wrongful death suit against the man who claimed that it was a plot by the mob and government rather than the act of one man (which is the government's official story on it). The ballistics of the gun with his fingerprints don't match up, he denied it until his death stating that his original confession was under the threat of the death penalty if he didn't confess, and MLK's family believed him.

In my town, there was some stuff going on to remember Dr. King at the Civil Rights Museum, but I think you had to get a ticket so I had a moment of silence on my own time.
