(CBS) LOS ANGELES An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning after being shot by his 3-year-old son while the two were in a pickup truck in Anaheim.
"He's getting assisted breathing with breathing tubes," LAPD Capt. Bill Murphy said. "He's awaiting a full neurological examination ... hopefully, later today we might have a little bit more information."
Enrique Chavez, 35, was driving his Ford Ranger near Harbor Boulevard and La Palma Avenue shortly before noon Tuesday when the boy, sitting in the back seat, somehow got his hands on his father's 9mm handgun, Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmidt said.
"How he got it, we don't know," Schmidt said, adding that there were two weapons in the vehicle.
The gun went off and the bullet entered the Chavez's back and exited through his chest, Schmidt said.
Chavez was able to stop the truck and hand the child over to a bystander and was alert and conscious before he was taken to a hospital, Schmidt said.
By late Tuesday afternoon, Chavez was in stable but critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
His condition Wednesday morning remained unchanged, Kevin Maiberger of the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Chavez, who lives in Anaheim, has been with the LAPD for nearly 11 years.
