Tom Hooper to direct movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats'

I suspect major rewrites in this movie, like on the scale of the stage version of Cabaret vs. Bob Fosse's Cabaret. I can imagine whole new storylines and everything, almost structuring it like the Catvengers or Fellowship of the Cats.

Probably! The final movie might not look much like the stage show, not surprising since the musical doesn't really have a plot. It's mostly just a string of song and dance numbers loosely connected by the fact they're about cats.

And Judi Dench is playing Old Deuteronomy? Well, they're going to have to rewrite that verse about the character burying "nine wives"...

Holy ****, they're not sparing any expense on this cast, that's for sure. We just need Dwayne Johnson in this now.

I'm curious as to who they'll get to play Rum Tum Tugger, which is one of the showcase roles.

Assuming it's full CGI mocap now, then Hugh Jackman. He's got the moves, the swagger; if he was 20, he could play the role for real on Broadway, but since it's CGI he can do this.

Hmm - I love Hugh but he's not a rock singer. They need a rocker, like a Mick Jagger type.

Heck, with mocap they could get Mick, he's still performing!

The songs are good but the plot is aimless and hard to follow. I remember seeing it in the West End and being disappointed after I had already heard the original cast recording.

Memory wasn't even a full song like on the album. It was in bits and pieces.

I always preferred Starlight Express to Cats. Far more watchable and I liked the songs better. The story was stronger too. I am not so fond of the modern productions of Starlight though because they can't afford a full set now with a proper racetrack. Most of the races are just filmed and shown on a screen.

I prefer they didn't mocap the Cats or try to make them look too much like actual cats. The Cats cast were more like Thundercats in that they were more like cat-human hybrids. They are anthropomorphic cats.

Thats probably what they're doing. Think Avatar.

Well, Cats doesn't really have a plot, since it's based on a book of poems that aren't really connected to each other. The movie will probably drop a lot of the songs (I can't see them keeping the Gumby Cat song, for example) and create a brand new plot revolving around Macavity.

I keep seeing those kinds of reactions and I'm puzzled. Were folks expecting the film to be people in cat costumes just like the show?

I think it’s just bonkers this is even happening. Then again, the musical is bonkers itself.

Let it be this Oscar darling or a complete and utter disaster, either way it’ll definitely be something to talk about. I’m all for it!

Has anyone actually followed the plot to Cats? I think Kimmy Schmidt put it best.

So its gonna be like Alvin and the Chipmunks but with more songs?

I figured something like this when I saw it for the first time.

The sets of the show have always been oversize, too.

I'm still wondering how they're going to make the actors look like real cats without the whole thing coming off as bizarre.

Like Avatar probably.

I just can't see how they're going to have realistic cats walking and dancing on two legs in a believable manner. Can't wait to see the first images. It's either going to be incredible or a nightmare.

I reckon they’ll keep them walking around on two feet type thing.

Oh well, going to be hard to compete with the real thing

They'll have to be on two legs if they're going to be dancing. I imagine they'll look pretty much like the stage version but with realistic catlike facial features.

Taylor Swift is apparently teasing that we may get a first look at the movie this Friday.

Very interested to see how they're going to show the cats dancing without it looking weird or creepy.
