I haven't played Rise either yet but from my understanding it's still very much in rookie Lara mode. I kinda just want to see the dual guns and the braided pony tail make an appearance in Shadow, I don't even really care if the shorts and green tank top make an appearance. At least they teased that in this movie, for a sequel we'll probably never get.

I hope she doesn't have the hairstyle. Dual pistols maybe but I don't want the classic look back. This is not the old Lara.

Biggest issue I see with the movie taking after the reboot game is that the reboot game has a better story; better focus on Lara with no one to take the spotlight, better mystical mumbo-jumbo for the island and Imiko, better badguy since as good as the actor is, he's not playing an utter loony like in the game, and the first game did a better job setting up a possible transformation into the old Lara, with her getting more snarky as the game went on and having a better dual pistol scene.

Domestic: $50,502,178
+Foreign: $194,600,000
=Worldwide: $245,102,178

The overseas box office should save the movie and get us a sequel.

Should it gross over $400 million worldwide to get a sequel? Its not even close to $300 million and this cost like 94 million.

Given its budget it's probably not far off breaking even. Whether that's good enough to do another film is anyone's guess. I do wonder though in hindsight if there was much else that could have been done with this film to attract more people. The conclusion I'm coming to is the Tomb Raider brand just isn't as valuable outside of the gaming community as it once was. Lara just isn't as iconic as she use to be. The rebooted game may have taken her in a new direction but it's not helped keep the character in the public eye. I think it just took away too much of what made the original popular and turned the series into something kinda generic. On top of that I don't know if Alicia was the best choice from a marketing perspective, she's crazy talented but hardly an actress known for big movie rolls.

Female-led action films were even more of a unicorn than they are now 17 years ago when the first TR movie came out.

So the box office for this was the exact same as Angelina Jolie’s first one, not accounting for inflation. I can’t imagine them giving it a sequel.

Well the first one had a higher budget, so this has that going for it...but the original also had a much higher domestic haul, so yeah. Sequel prospects unlikely.

That sucks though I think domestic could be enough for them to greenlight a sequel.

Tomb Raider just really needs to be adapted to a Netflix/HBO/Starz tv show with Lara traveling the globe.

It hits digital next Tuesday, and blu-ray June 12th.

That's probably a pretty great idea.

I thought Alicia was superb so would love to see her reprise the role. Shame it seems we won't get that.

Did it have a higher budget? Wikipedia has them listed as the same.

The new one cost $94 million. The previous one cost around $110 million I believe but it was 17 years ago.

I said all along that I didn't think they were aiming high enough with this one and as a result it has largely gone under the radar with Vikander's performance not getting the audience it deserves.

And it's a shame as her performance was great. And I can only laugh at anyone suggesting she 'wasnt hit enough' for the role as she was stunning throughout.

"hit enough" - is that to do with her physique? She was ripped!

Surprised how good it was. RT rating is baffling. And it comes from someone who disliked even the idea of this film. As far as an adaptation of the reboot, it's vastly superior to the games it's based on.

Vikander was excellent in the role. The movie has great energy and heart and it just loses a bit of steam in the final part. Production was very good. And while saying that it's the best game property adaptation since MK '95 isn't much, I think, as far as overall quality goes, it's the best game adaptation ever and a very decent action-adventure film on it's own. Even if it doesn't have any iconic stuff in it.

"Very decent" is the best way to describe it, IMO. It's not great and as you say, lacks anything iconic, but it's competently made, well-acted, sufficiently entertaining, and lays a solid enough foundation for a franchise to build from. So I too am a little surprised it doesn't have a higher RT score. If I had to guess the score after seeing it, I would've imagined it in the 65%-70% range. I can't imagine that many critics went into it expecting/hoping for too much more than it delivered.

I, too, was surprised by how "ok" it was.
I liked how the camera followed Lara in action, it had a video game feel about it.
I was also impressed by how credible ( movie credible ) the actress was in her actions scenes. I didn't expected so much beating, she had it rough.
The tomb part was nice.
I would not mind a sequel.

Edit : oh and nice muscle and toned body, she was ripped, especially her upper back.

Apologies, it was meant to say 'hot enough' as many didn't think Vikander was that for the role. To me she has always been hot as hell, and was the same here.
