The Amazing Spider-Man Tone.

I think you may be missing the point of Peter's social life, he is a perpetual underdog. His entire personal side is him struggling with love to the point of soap opera melodrama. I think the movies captured that perfectly.

But I agree he is not free and different enough as Spidey, albeit I am not going to cricize the endings to either of the first two movies and Spidey pretty much defeated both of 'em by that point. The only thing that could have made the ending of SM2 better IMO is the perfectly placed joke:

Doc Ock: Let's see you scurry out of this!

Spidey:...okay.

And he says it as fast as a smartass can and then boom comedy maximized. Just my opinion, though.

For Peter as a character, I think we should finally see him win for once.

SM1- GG defeats himself, SM2- Doc Ock defeats himself, SM3- Spider-man lets Sandman get away after commiting all kinds of crimes and killing his uncle. Forgiving him doesn't mean letting him fly away to go kill other people or rob more banks..Also his sick daughter's story is never resolved, but I digress...

Venom is the only character that Spider-man ever defeats in the films.

So long story short and to summarize: Spider-man needs to beat more bad guys and win. Peter needs to have some good things happen to him and win in that way.

I think that's one of the reasons why Lizard is perfect to be used this time. Peter can succeed to cure him and make him normal again. He'll manage to save a friend from dying this time.

That's hardly a joke, more a humorous reaction. I think the 'hrmmph' noise was sufficent enough. I agree with you about the spider-man drama bordering on soap opera, but I don't think the movie handled it well. The dialogue was very inpersonal... when tobey maguire spent 2 minutes stammering and babbling crap like 'when you see mary jane you feel... uhh, you don't what you feel, but you know what kind of man you wanna be' Any real girl wouldve lost interest half way through.

How can I guy with spider-powers, dating a super-model be a perpetual underdog? Most of the time yeh, but he gets a lucky break now and again

If they had Chameleon in the movie, they could make it where Dr.Connors never changes back from being the Lizard, but spidey thinks that he does cause Chameleon uses a Dr.Connors disguise.

Exactly. That's my point. Spidey does enjoy life and he does a lot of things to try to enjoy it more. I think anyone who believes him to be a perpetual underdog is missing the point of his social life.

Love and relationships are -not- the point of spidey comics. They were plot twists used to make a believable and relatable obstacle to reflect and contrast the obstacles faced as Spider-man.

And even then, they weren't so bad or so melodramatic. We're talking about like 50 years of comics summed up in a couple of words.

  1. Betty Brant
  2. Gwen Stacy
  3. Mary-Jane Watson
  4. Cissy Ironwood
  5. Debra Whitman
  6. Felicia Hardy
Pete got girls a lot. And it wasn't a big deal, it wasn't like a soap opera. It was just a young super powered kid dealing with relationships. I'm sure some members of the board have had more than 6 girls and they wouldn't call it "melodrama". Now, juggling it with being a hero might be tough...but think about this:

If it was so hard, why didn't he break up with them....or better yet, why did he go out with any of them to begin with? Doesn't the great power, great responsibility thing mean to make great choices too? Or maybe Uncle Ben died before he could have "the talk" with Peter...

After watching Seabiscuit recently and some of the dialogue Ross wrote, I would use that flick as a template. Ross had some pretty clever and funny exchanges between characters in a movie that was supposed to be teary-eyed Oscar bait, and he could make Spidey funny without coming off too campy.

Agreed.

I would like a more serious and mature Spiderman. I'm not saying it needs to be dark or violent, just more adult.

Raimi should watch the Harry Potter movies, cause Harry grows up on each sequel,he matures,he grows.

hmm

interesting point.

I feel Peter grew from Sm1-SM2, but the main plot of SM3 was about him kind of reverting due to his fame. in the end, he was humbled again.

The movie needs to be taken more seriously. I hate the whole tone of the Daily Bugle/JJJ, it's a circus of nothing but comedy-relief. How are you going to take the villains seriously, when a bunch of goofy clowns are naming them? Peter Parker/Spidey should be the only ones spewing the witty banter, not JJJ. JJJ should be a blood serious and angry character, but Simmons, like so many of the actors in Spider-Man, his talents are wasted because the script caters mostly to little kids. I really think Spider-Man himself should have been written like Tony Stark of the Iron Man movies, I like his various tone of humor.

I want the films setup in a tone where you can easily do a storyline like "Kraven's Last Hunt" or a really good action thriller with a character like Carnage or The Lizard. The way these films are setup, people laugh at you when you mention doing a story with a serial killer, or a guy who commits suicide in a Spider-Man movie. These are not elements that I made up, because I want Spider-Man films to be cool, dark and more adult-oriented, these are elements from the comics that can never be used, because Sony and Marvel see Spider-Man as their Hannah Montana.

"We must not upset the parents or write something that kids don't understand"--therefore everything gets watered-down.

I say that you can capture every element of Spider-Man's comics, even if the movies geared towards older teens/adults. I also believe you can make great Spider-Man films with non-A-List villains (SHOCKER comes to mind), if the tone was geared towards the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Bourne' movie audience. Which both of their latest films were PG-13 like Spider-Man, but you sure as hell wouldn't know that by watching them. And I don't have to tell you how many CHILDREN love Lord of the Rings or do I?

It's a damn shame that even Harry Potter can show evil villains throughout their films, villains that look like they're friends of Satan. Yet, we get a Green Goblin who looks like a Power Ranger villain and a Doctor Octopus who wants to do a good thing by the end of the movie.

I don't know what's it going to take, a new director, finding the right writer, waiting until Disney take the franchise over after Spider-Man 6 and giving Spidey back to Marvel--with a whole new cast and creative team. I don't know what the hell it's going to take, but I don't have much time, I won't be on this good Earth much longer...so hurry the hell up.

It is disgusting how they keep watering this franchise down. There are some spurts of seriousness and good action, but for the most part I'm tired, and I mean TIRED of being shown material as if I had an IQ of 17. I'm tired of the carefull approach to it all.

Grow some balls already. I'm not even talking Dark Knight serious, sorry, we're all not even talking that serious, we just want it TAKEN seriously for craps sake. Is that too much too ask? I hate Raimi for that, or the studio, or whoevers fault it is. It's infuriating, bellitting, and annoying.

I've said it before a trillion times and I'll say it again, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 is so awesome and re-watchable because it's genuine, was taken seriously, with minor cheese and toning down. Everyone, almost everyone I approach about it loves, likes it alot, or just ackowledges it was a good movie - BECAUSE IT DID NOT TREAT the audience like they were stupid 3 year olds. Bravo to the makes of that movie.

I wish I could say bravo to Spider-Man 4 one day, just the same way.
