Too CGI-ish!

Alba Follwer,

I am a huge history fan, too, but....

Just remember... Frank Miller's story is not "accurate history"!!!

It is entertainment!

:xmen: Lady Leonidas

Niether was Troy but that still didn't stop me from enjoying it. 300 is just hs version of the real event. I hope Frank tackles Greek Mythology next:woot::woot::woot:. Me loves Greek mytholgy

Yes it looks a little too cgi! But i like it. I liked it in Sin City, and i like it here too. I gives a mystic feeling!
Cant w8 4 the movie!

Yea, I think the CGI is perfect for a movie like this. Man I love how the visuals and some scenes are dead on the graphic novel. Frank Miller is a god! Have you seen the clip where the boy squares up with the wolf. Straight out of the comic novel. Yes!

Sin City works very well for me.

However, it was *painful* for me to sit through Ultraviolet. I really hated that movie. Way to stylized. I even thought it made Milla Jovovich look bad. I *loved* her in the Resident Evil movies, and I *know* she doesn't look bad. It would be like seeing Jessica Alba in a movie and having her look bad. I don't see how it's possible. It blows my mind.

So, here is hoping for the 300 CGI to work well... like Sin City, not like Ultraviolet. Please.

It does look very CGI-laden. Doesn't mean it doesn't look good, but its so obvious its green screen, its not even funny.

Looks good though. I hope THEY! DON'T! SCREAM! EVERY! SINGLE! LINE! IN! THE! FILM!!!

Most of the scenes are obviously CGI, and usually in other movies, I can tell and it bugs me. ("It's supposed to look real? Pshaw!") But for 300, it's obviously the look that they're going for, it's obvious that it's stylized, and I dig it. Not to mention that it looks exactly the same as Frank Miller's artwork. I didn't think it would be possible...but it totally does.

It looks more like Frank Miller's work than Sin City did. Probably because Zack Snyder is a bit more skilled than Robert Rodriguez.

I like the style they're going for but...

I do think it looks a little too polished and fake - it should be grittier and blend more imho

I love the look of everything I've seen. It works perfectly, IMO.

yeah, his co-director in Sin City was a hack too, neither of them could match Frank Miller... :whatever:

People need to learn the difference between truly beautiful film, and bad video game images. This looks fun, but not exactly beautiful. More like a bad acid trip.

Funny thing I see here and AICN, 20 glowing posts, then come in a'holes with really shallow unoriginal vauge critism.

"It looks fake"

"They are yelling too much"

"It's like a video game"

"MTV Editing"

Why dont you Byrne steal the book in a Borders, then compare critism. It looks damn close to the stylised graphic novel it was based on. You dont like it? Sucks to be you.

Why oh why is this an issue?
This is quite possibly Hollywood's best attempt to bring a comic book to the big screen. The look and feel of this movie is like it has just been ripped off the page of a comic. How in the world is that a bad thing?
Yes, this movie is HIGHLY stylized. It reminds me of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow in it's look, but much better rendered.
If you are a comic fan and can't get behind this, then something is wrong with you, not the movie.

If I had gone into the theater expecting to see a LotR style massive outdoor-shot epic, I'd have been disappointed. However, I am not. I'm VERY much looking forward to going and seeing a highly stylized piece of work.

How better to duplicate comic drawings than with digital drawings designed to match it nearly exactly?

In some ways, yes, but in other ways, no. The graphic novel had a very earthy, gritty feel to it. The colors were subdued earth tones. Miller's graphic novel was stylized, but it was in no way glossy or polished, like this movie looks.

I had the same complaint about SIN CITY. SIN CITY sometimes got it right with the "looks as if it's been drawn in pen and ink" style (see Hartigan walking out of prison, or the "negative" shot of "The Customer is Always Right"), but a lot of times it looked like crappy glossy CGI, rather than a comic book.

In the end, I guess I'm one of the few people who have no interest in this film. It's all style over substance, and the style doesn't particularly grab me.

I'm so with you on this!

Damn! This thread is still here?! Well, anyway, I have faith in the film. I'll be there opening weekend. :)

It does look kinda glossy but so did Sky Captain.

I wouldn't compare this movie to Sky Captain.

i too thought the movie looked way to styleized but when i found out that the story in the movie is that one spartan survives or something and returns to sparta and this is his version of the events it all makes sense. i mean look at most of greek history stories, its all stylized and blown up with cyclops and giants.

I don't know if this has been discussed or not, but does anyone feel that its too much CGI? It worked in Sin City but here it just looks too much.
they wanted that CGI fake look. it is there to have an unique look.
but i see that some people will have a problem with this. but this movie is nto suposed to be like troy or any other history movies. its a movie from frank millers comics.
