Superman Returns Too Much CGI?

That is my point. There's no reason for that scene to be CGI. Why not green screen?

Maybe I'm being a little nitpicky, but I'm still not sure how it will all compare to STM and SII.
i agree that shot could've been greenscreened, but the truth is we weren't in the production so we don't know what went on. it's VERY possible that they couldn't get that shot or the shots that they DID weren't as good as Singer hoped...

...this happened a LOT in Lord of the Rings. one shot, in particular, where one of the huge elephants collides with another. Peter Jackson shot live actors to be in that shot but it ended up looking not quite right, so he told his digital team to do it in all 3d so they did and they got EXACTLY what he wanted. now-a-days, if you didn't get the shot you wanted...you don't have to settle for a shot that's not up to par with what you want. i'm sure Singer has a good reason for using digital doubles for the shots he used them in...and hopefully, we can see a little bit as to why he did in the special features that'll come with the dvd.

And that's essentially what we're going to get. It's going to be a mixture of all types of techniques to update how Superman can fly.

We're going to see some things we haven't seen before that are going to be totally in-camera shots and CG.

The HBO footage showcased a bit of that.

that actually looks pretty real to me--how do you know its CGI?

i'm not gonna say that i'm 100% sure that's a cg shot, but i've been studying 3d modeling/graphics for almost 4 years and when i saw that shot last night on the HBO special it looked like a cg shot to me. if it IS cg then that shows that how good cg technology is getting (to be able to fool most people). if you really think about it...even some REAL shots are starting to look like cg...

...it shows that the line between what we think is cg and what is real is being blurred more and more. but i'm pretty sure that shot of Supes flying is cg.

That's because the Genesis HD camera has no grain. Normal film has grain, and of course CGI images don't, so CGI usually has fake grain to fit in with the film. But the Genesis camera removes the grain, so normal shots look as clean and shiny as CGI does.

ah...i see, but i was talking about in other movies too...just look at King Kong and Narnia. there are shots in those movies that i'm sure children don't know are special effects.

I dunno, in a movie like this, the excessive use of CGI is more than expected and acceptable I think.

With a character like Batman though, where he's not doing anything as fantastic or majestic.......it can be an issue. But, with Supes- no problem I think.

From the things we have seen The CGI balance seems right, the action sequences are so elaborate there really is no other way to do then effectively
