Top 10 films of 2014

I only just saw The Grand Budapest Hotel yesterday. What a great film. Probably my favourite of the year.

1. Grand Budapest Hotel
2. Edge of Tomorrow
3. The Winter Soldier
4. The Lego Movie
5. Bad Neighbours
6. Days of Future Past

And why do people use .3 and .7 in their ratings? I don't get it.

Wow, a third person not overwhelmed by DoFP.

People use decimals because they think their opinions are really precise. Like this:

"I rate Grand Budapest Hotel a 9.5643778943765 / 10 ".

And that is what baffles me. Just use a ****ing .5 lol.

I wouldn't say i was underwhelmed by DofP. I'd still give it a solid 8 out of 10. I just don't really care for the characters and i'm bored of the civil rights allegories. It's used as a crutch.

What happened to the X-Men being outcasts fighting to save and protect the people who hate them? The first X-Men and First Class showed a bit of that in their climaxes. All the others the X-Men are basically saving themselves. They are very selfish "superheroes" really.

Top 10 Most Anticipated Films:

3. The Theory of Everything
4. The Giver
5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

9. Dumb and Dumber To
10. Exodus

If I were posting this at the beginning of the year Godzilla, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Edge of Tomorrow and Transcendence would have made the list.

Now that I have seen those, Transcendence was my biggest disappointment. It looked like it would be good, a movie with Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall which is one of my favorite actresses, and Morgan Freeman with Cillian urphy sounded so good on paper.

My favorite movies of 2014 so far are:

1. The Grand Budapest Hotel
2. Under the Skin
3. Locke
4. Nymphomaniac Part I and II
5. The Raid 2
6. Noah
7. Edge of Tomorrow
8. X-Men: Days of Future Past
9. The Lego Movie
10. Captain America: Winter Soldier

I'm glad you liked it. You know my reaaons for giving it a "B" grade -- Singer's shoddy work on recreating the 1970s, the script's misunderstanding of the period, the plot holes, the dumbfounding climax, and the fact the only two character arcs in the movie were clunky.

The action scenes and visuals were good though.

I hope that Apes can be a better movie.

But i still don't get it, First Class was also far from using the 60s all that well, their interpretation of the period felt very "plastic", and the plot with the threat of nuclear holocaust could have been used in the modern setting too, in fact, Shaw's plan felt even more clunky due to having to tie with the missile crisis of the time, as if a holocaust like that wouldn't cause mutant deaths too.

What matters the most in a movie isn't always complete realism, but the emotion behind the decisions and fulfilment for the action, RedLetterMedia's review gave a pretty interesting opinion on this subject. With Bryan Singer's X-Men, the themes of his movies always seem genuine and not fabricated, which is more than i can say to Zack Snyder's filmography.

With all the events they had to tie into, they did the best job i could imagine them doing, in any other hands this would either be divided into 2 parts or end up being a complete mess.
