Being a big fan of comic-books and superhero films, I've decided to do a bit of thinking. If I could create a superhero of my own for Marvel Comics... who would I create? Well, after doing a bit of thinking I found out exactly who my new superhero is. Tortoise-Man. Actually, I still haven't finished thinking it out, but I've posted the basic biography below (so far, it's pretty vague. I'm hoping you could give me some suggestions or comments).
Dr. Dean Parsons, a 30 year old prodigal genius, was a researcher of new animal species. Discovering new animals, and relating them to already known creatures was his job. He had obtained his PhD at the age of 28, and was incredibly talented. During one of his studies, a very strange, unfamiliar tortoise was presented to him. In order to test its DNA to confirm any matches with any previously known specimen, he attempted to take a blood sample using a syringe. Surprisingly, he found difficulty retrieving any blood from the animal, as a protective 'coat' would quickly reveal itself from the tortoise's skin, breaking the needle in the process. Eager to retrieve DNA, and seeing no other way, Dean brought out a new invention, dubbed the "next technology in DNA retrieval". This machine, powered wirelessly using a wireless adapter, sent a thin laser through a small opening in a container, and would come in contact with the subject, painlessly retrieving DNA from the specimen, and returning it to the container. However, when Dean attempted to use this new technology, something went horribly wrong.
When Dean began the process of retrieval, he aimed the beam toward the tortoise. As he fired the laser, the laser entered the tortoise's skin, but as it retracted, the creature's strange, protective 'coat/shell' revealed itself once more. When the laser retracted from the tortoise, the beam itself deflected off of the outside of the tortoise's protective coat, entering Dean. The laser carried the tortoise's DNA into his body, adding its DNA on top of his own. Dean did not notice this, as the laser went by in a flash. When the laser retracted, finally, Dean believed he had retrieved the DNA, and brought the sample to the lab downstairs. He also returned the creature to another room, where someone sealed the creature away for the night.
Dean Parsons, believing everything had gone to plan, went home, but he began to feel very nauseous and ill. He vomited for hours, suffering in his home. When he could vomit no more, he rested, then went to sleep. While dreaming, he relived the incident, but in very slow motion. As he observed, things began to become clearer. During that night, the DNA also merged with his own. The next day, he awoke, feeling better. He went to the doctor's office just to be sure he was all right. Amazingly, the doctor's words were not what he had expected.
"You are exceptionally healthy. I don't see any problems at all."
With this, he pointed out that it may have been motion sickness, or something similar. Dean agreed, and left the hospital. Having little to do for the next day (he had a day off from work), he decided to enjoy the day. However, as he was strolling through Central Park (I might want to base this in New York), someone had pushed him aside. From what he could tell, someone was attempting to rob him, then assault him. Instinctively, as the thief brought a knife out, he grabbed the attacker's arm, and snapped it in two. The robber pulled a gun out, and, as he did, Dr. Parsons noticed every movement. Although he was about to be shot, he did not feel threatened. As the thief launched a bullet from the gun, a protective, thick skin/shell appeared from Dean's skin. When the bullet hit, it had slightly pierced the thick outer skin, doing no damage to him at all. Removing the bullet, he went on to punch the robber in the torso, breaking his ribcage, and knocking him several feet back. Not believing what had happened, he associated the sudden gain in physical strength with the incident the day before.
Still not believing what he had done, and how all of this had happened, he began to panic, and ran into a dark alleyway. In this dark alleyway, however, someone else was being assaulted. Realizing the amount of crime in the city, Dean tackled the criminal, and smashed his fists together in an effort to threaten the attacker. Interestingly, a barely noticeable wave of some sort of energy flowed through the air, smashing a garbage can, and knocking it over. He then punched the offender in the face, breaking his jaw, and leaving him to be found by the police. Running off, he started throwing his hand to the wall in order to keep himself standing (he had a large amount of stress from what had just happened), but noticed his hand 'stick' to the wall, as if something were pulling his hand toward the wall. Attempting to rid himself of the wall, he leaped backward, and ended up leaping into the sky, flipping backwards, and landing on his feet... on the wall. Piecing together what had happened, he began to ascend the walls, jumping from building to building, and dropping to the ground.
The next day, he went back to work, but was called to the administrator's desk as soon as he had arrived. When spoken to, the administrator complained about Dean's lack of progress in his research, finding him to be only in the way. After a brief conversation, Dean had been fired, his career over. Finding no hope, and realizing that his newfound abilities were acting as a burden to him, he sought a cure. Unfortunately, it seemed there was no way to cure his condition and reclaim the life he once had. Disgruntled and deeply annoyed, he fled to a different part of New York in order to begin a new life, and to use his abilities to prevent crime from continuing in the city. Donning a costume (to ensure his regular identity would not be targeted if he were to run into danger), he set off into the city. A new hero was born. (Dean would later become a nerdy university professor. No one would suspect he was Tortoise-Man.)
Powers and Abilities
--------------------
-Super strength
-Awareness of surroundings (similar to Spider-Man's spider sense)
-Ability to generate large amount of friction from limbs. Using this ability, he can run up walls, kick off of walls (similar to a wall-jump in some video games), stop himself from falling by grabbing onto a wall, pulling himself up walls (grabbing a wall with one/both hands, and throwing himself higher, thus being able to ascend walls), staying very balanced on surfaces (if he concentrates with all of his might, only very powerful things can knock him off balance), being able to stand on the ceiling.
-Defensive outer-skin/shell that can be hidden in skin, or revealed for protection. Using this ability, he can protect himself from bullets, objects going his way. This defensive skin will be severely damaged if an intense amount of energy strikes it (an explosion). If subject to extreme cold (very low temperatures), the defensive shell will be very weak. Of course, after a while, the outer shell will heal itself completely.
-Ability to leap houses using the strength from his feet and hands.
-Of course, acrobatic skills (flipping, cartwheels, spinning, etc).
-Ability to smash hands together to create one-second kinetic barrier (by smashing his fists together, the immense amount of strength from both fists collide with each other. A small barrier will quickly appear and grow from the area of the collision, reaching every which way to make a 10-meter circular barrier (extending 5 meters each way from the area of collision). This kinetic barrier only lasts for one second, and the reason it is called a kinetic barrier is because it uses kinetic energy. This means anything in its way will be deflected off of it. If animals/humans are in its way, they will be knocked backward (sort of like a powerful slap in the face, twisting your body). This is useful for momentarily stunning the villain/opponent).
------------------
He can leap (either high in the air or forward), walk up walls/throw himself up, use a moment-lasting kinetic barrier (more of a tactical stunning ability), do his own stunts, stay on walls through friction (without burning his limbs), protect himself using a defensive skin (which will still be damaged if hit with something very large/destructive. For example, a car, or something to that extent and larger), and more. What do you think or Tortoise-Man?
By the way, to explain the reason he's called "Tortoise-Man", I had a chat with Danger Mouse.
And voila, I'm here asking around.

By the way, to explain the reason he's called "Tortoise-Man", I had a chat with Danger Mouse.
Johnny Bravo: so, is this tortoise-man expected to be taken seriously by the villians?
Kyono !!!: Umm... so you've read the story?
Kyono !!!:
Johnny Bravo: it seems that his abilities has little to no similarities to tortoises. so why call himself that?
Kyono !!!: Well, the tortoise has a large shell. Yet, it still moves the way it does. If you take the shell away, the tortoise's speed is greatly increased. Because of the character's lack of shell, his speed has not been decreased.
Kyono !!!: His skin is powerful and tough like the tortoise's.
Johnny Bravo: granted his abilities come from a freak tortoise. but he doesn't have a half-shell on his back and he can't retract his limbs into his body, so why tortoise man?
Kyono !!!: The shell is an add-on.
Kyono !!!: It's external. You can remove the shell from the tortoise.
Kyono !!!: My character never had a shell. If he wanted one, he'd wear one.
Kyono !!!: The tortoise must have a tremendous amount of strength to lift itself when walking (and therefore he is much stronger than he was before).
Johnny Bravo: and he doesn't need a shell either. so, for those who aren't aware of how he got his powers, they'd go 'huh? why do you call yourself tortoise-man?'
Kyono !!!: That's the problem. Everyone generalized turtles and tortoises as slow-moving creatures with shells.
Kyono !!!: If you look beyond the stereotype, they are much greater creatures.
Kyono !!!: Basically, Tortoise-Man is a tortoise-like man with no shell.
Johnny Bravo: yes, i get that. but what i fail to get is why people associate their alter-egos to the creatures that made them be. if i have such powers, i would call myself something else far cooler than tortoise-man. heck, if i was bitten by a radioactive spider, i'd probably even call myself something other than 'spider-man'.
Kyono !!!: But I want him to have the hyphen and the "man" in his name.
Kyono !!!: None of this "Firebolt" or "Gigantomushroom" naming.
Kyono !!!: I'd like to stick with the simplest, most efficient name for him. Same was probably said about "Spider-Man" and "Batman".
Johnny Bravo: spider-man works coz he behaves like one. batman works coz he wanted a terrifying icon to scare criminals. but tortoise-man? c'mon...
Kyono !!!: So, what are you saying? You want to give him a shell?
Johnny Bravo: no, coz then people would start calling me michaelangelo.
Johnny Bravo: calling him. sorry.
Kyono !!!:
Kyono !!!: Take a tortoise and remove its shell. See how it behaves. Tortoise-Man is very similar to a tortoise.
Kyono !!!: Tortoises, without their shells, can move quickly up steep hills.
Johnny Bravo: yes, but people (like it or not) associates tortoises with a slow-moving creature with shells.
Kyono !!!: Then I'd have to redesign him and everything.
Kyono !!!: I thought the shell sewn onto his back and the turtle on the front made it obvious.
Kyono !!!: The suit design looks something a bit like a turtle with a shell. Except for the actual shell.
Johnny Bravo: his powers are absolutely incredible. love it. but the name will have people make fun of him.
Johnny Bravo: dude, roll with it. it's only one man's opinion. ask around.
And voila, I'm here asking around.
