'Touchdown Jesus' Statue Destroyed By Lightning Strike!

With all due respect to your uncle, I see Solid Rock as a mega-church/cult type of church. For a church to spend $250,000+ on an unnecessary statue when that money could have, and should have, gone to some kind of charitable program is despicable. (Which you agreed with me on.)

The amount they do give means nothing to me when they can spend such a ridiculous amount on a statue they do not need. And now, there are reports suggesting that it is 'going to take' upwards of $1 MILLION to replace it.

Again, I'm not trying to be disrespectful, I just cannot stand these large mega-churches.

I'm not a huge fan of them either but I at least try to look at them on a case by case basis. I've been to a few that are huge that are perfectly acceptable. They seem to have their priorities straight, etc. I do agree that Solid Rock raises flags at times for me, but I've not had enough dealings with them to say one way or another that there's issues there. The statue is really the only major beef I have with them. I get what they're trying to do and I can assume further more their goals with it, but I can't say I agree with it myself.

A sign? Rothman is going to reboot Fantastic Four with Paul W. S. Anderson directing?

Hahaha! That thing is a monstrosity. I know someone who lives near it, he friggin' hates it.

This really is one of the funniest things to happen in a long time. That statue was conveniently located at the halfway point between my house and college. I saw it all the time.

It always struck me as odd that a church would spend so much money on a statue of their savior rather than a charity of some sort.

It is odd. I think most people agree on that, including most christians. It's just wierd. God knows if my church tried to do this I'd be gung hoe against it and would make my voice heard.

This is what happens when you put steel rods pointing to the sky.

Considering Jesus made charity the center of Christianity and the Bible explicitly bans creating idols, I have my doubts Jesus would be impressed by a church spending $250,000 on a statue of him instead of spending it on something helpful.

Turns out they had it insured for $500,000 so it won't cost them anything out of pocket to replace it (which they said is going to happen). Dayton news also reported that they're donating all the money people have been sending in to local charities. I'm not a fan of the church but at least they're not hoarding that money.

I still think it would be cool to put to bright red lights like eyes on the thing and post a big sign that says "I'll be back" or "come with me if you want to live....forever".

Did anyone else get to hear the 911 calls that were phoned in about this? Hilarious.

Maybe this is a sign that the money spent on its construction should have gone to something more appropriate...like a charity?

Jesus don't play foozball. Foozball is the Devil.

Jesus bowls. Didn't you know whenever you hear thunder, that it's Jesus and the angels bowling?

Well that's good news. I and like the "live....forever" line :D

I think all of the pastors and priests in the city found a lot of new material for their sermons..

Sure, atheists are always trying to bash believers every chance they get. You yourself spend a lot of time in the religion debate thread bashing the believers.
Not really. More like, he explains things properly. As do many others.

It doesn't matter who it is; if someone misrepresents something, then someone with the proper knowledge should correct him/her.

Spend $250,000 on a statue of a man your religion tells you is the son of a deity who expressly forbids the worshipping of idols, instead of spending that $250,000 on charity, when charity is the core of the teachings of the man you're building the statue of?

Way to miss the point of your own religion by about a million miles.

Sure, some atheists are always trying to bash believers every chance they get.

Fixed. Plenty of atheists can accept people with different beliefs. Some also can't, but there's no shortage of so-called believers who don't have any tolerance either.

But he and other atheists go out of their way to try and bash the beliefs of believers. If they don't believe, why bother? Just ignore it and move on.
