A huge debate started up in my class the other day and I wondered what the Hype would make of it.

Simple question.
Which is the more "Entertaining" and "Engaging" Summer style action thriller of it's age.

True Lies
[YT]3B7HG8_xbDw[/YT]

Speed
[YT]I2Ser5Bcdy0[/YT]

Bomb movie with a twist lead by young action talent vs Spy movie with a twist and proven action talent.

I like both but my vote goes to True Lies.

True Lies wins everytime for me.

I didn't watch Speed until later in life, but I grew up watching True Lies as a kid all the time and it'll always have a special place.. :D

True Lies. Far better of the two. Faaar better.

I wholeheartedly agree! Speed is crap, it was crap when it came out and it still is! Gus Van Sant can kiss my butt!

I picked True Lies because I really didn't like what Keanu did with the movie. He has good movies & bad movies, & Speed is meh.

What? wow....speed is clearly a much better film. I pick Speed by FAR.

Speed. Always liked it better than True Lies.

I think True Lies is better but I'll never forget the first time seeing Speed . It was kind of rush and the bridge scene was riveting. Unfortunately Speed has lost some of it's effect on me after multiple viewings.

Speed was THE action movie of the early 90s. This isn't even close.

Not only was/is Speed much more of a critical success but it's also a greater financial one too. Which is interesting seeing as how they came out the same year(94) and Arnuld and Cameron were mega stars at that point.

What does Van Sant have to do with speed btw?

Personally I feel that speed is real ride:yay: for it's audience and a big time thriller whereas True Lies literally seems like the movie Michael Bay wants to make before he dies.

I mean all the jokes and terrorists and sexy half naked women and jokes and oily muscles and foreign policy and America and harware..etc. If bay made that exact movie(not saying he could), it would be discretely dissected.

I personally vote speed, not only did it destroy it's theater audience but I think it works better as a stand alone film, whereas TL seems designed for some sort of ongoing series. I will admit that it was awesome though.

true lies worldwide = $378,882,411

speed worldwide = $350,448,145

the world and I agree.....true lies

the one liners, the paxton, the arnold(tom).....cant go wrong.

Ill take "your fired" over "Yeah, but I'm taller"

check your stats, then check what I said.

it was more of....a success is a success, not really a....HA YOU WRONG!!!!

speed made more money, because it was cheaper to make, but the movie going public dont care about that stuff. they went out to see AH-NOLD kick ass and take names.

I like both movies, own both movies. Speed is a fun movie, has good lies, semi good acting. Im a keanu fanboy, ill be the first to defend the man. But overall, the movie I like best is true lies.

True Lies. This is a good movie-vs.-movie debate. Both are almost equally good in my eyes, but TL for me was more entertaining.

True Lies, was fun entertainment. Speed, was a tense thrill ride.

I have to pick True Lies, it has more variety in locations for the action to take place. The comedy (both intentional and unintentional) and great cast. I could go on, but I like True Lies more than Speed, a good film in it's own right.

Actually I would Say True Lies is more "Entertaining" than Speed.

Speed more "Engaging" than True Lies.

If that makes sense.

I was always more entertained by Speed, tbh.

Uh, what about T2? Possibly the greatest action film ever made. Came out in 1991.

I'd probably pick Speed over True Lies, but to be honest I haven't seen Speed in years. So my view of it is pretty clouded.

I've never seen True Lies, so can't compare them, but I thought it was worth mentioning that Joss Whedon wrote the final draft of Speed's screenplay, he didn't get any onscreen credit for his work due to some writer's guild rule thingy stuff I think.

I'm not much for action-comedies but still like True Lies. Absolutely loooove Speed though. Easy choice for me.

Action comedies get no respect these days, but in the 90's and late 80's there were where it was at. If one came out today(beyond Iron Man, which is more a one liner film than it is situational) it just get's dissected mostly and less then favorable compared to films that simply play the genre straight.

I believe Tarantino said Speed was one of the best (action) films he's seen. I think he'd pick it over true lies but that's irrelevant.

Speed had a buff Keanu, young Sandra Bullock, crazy Dennis Hopper, funny Jeff Daniels, lots of suspense, action, and drama.

True Lies had Arnold in his last great cinematic role, the only good Tom Arnold film (as far as I know), Jamie Lee Curtis doing one of the best strip dances ever filmed along with her own helicopter stunt, crazy and funny Bill Paxton, Tia Carrere as a villain, Charlton Heston practically playing Nick Fury, lots of funny moments, lots of dramatic moments, lots of awesome action......not to mention Eliza Dushku.

For me it's a wash. I love both movies, but True Lies holds more cinematic gold in my eyes.
