Yea, love em both, but True Lies is the winner for me. And yea, Charlton Heston as Nick Fury... awesome.

true lies worldwide = $378,882,411

speed worldwide = $350,448,145

the world and I agree.....true lies

While I voted TL as well(after the 1st Terminator movie it's my favorite Jim Cameron movie) you also gotta put things in context. TL had the absolute advantage in star power and notable director power to push the buzz of the movie whilst Speed had not much of that at all. Given those factors it should have been a much bigger blow-out than what ended up happening. I mean TL should have topped Speed by a hundred million world wide easily given it's inherent advantages.

not to mention speed made more money...
with a pre matrix reeves

Yeah, Reeves was just that guy from Bill & Ted before Speed. It was Bullock's first break at all and only Hopper was really anything like a notable star in it.

Plus that the dude responsible for skynet. Love that guy

While i love both movies , i just think that True Lies has the edge when it comes to rewatchability.
C'mon Bill Paxton is just awesome with his one liners

i like both movies. and i watch both movies every year. since the 90's.

True lies is probably more re-watchable. Though I'm not sure that would be entered as a criteria for good film.

I'll vote Speed as it's a little more unconventional. But I love both films dearly. True Lies features the last time Arnold and Cameron where involved in true greatness. Why the hell True Lies and The Abyss haven't received a Blu Ray special edition yet is beyond me.

i think both are re-watchable. If we compare first 20 minutes to first 20.

speeds first 20 has a thriller like vibe. We have a group full of people, trapped with a crazy ass bomber who is in the building with the bomb squad having pop quizzes.

true lies first 20 is pretty much dancing, espionage, some light comedy and tom arnold saying,"ditch the *****" with AH-NOLD saying,"heres my invitation" and a chase.

people will stick around for arnold, but people might be more engaged with speed and how it starts. Lets not forget, in true lies, arnolds stunt man while running in the snow looked like a complete idiot. like someone told him to act like a crazy man being chased by other crazy men and it looked pretty silly.

I like True Lies, but I love Speed.

The late 80's/early 90's action movies are awesome.

Speed gets more and more boring with every re-watch, True Lies is still a blast.

I guess True Lies takes it.
On these boards anyways.

True Lies had so much more going on. Comedy, big action, and a big star. Speed is a great movie, but I'd say True Lies has the edge on it.

Why not? Seems to me that is the hallmark of a good film if ever there was one.

And I find them both easily rewatchable.

It's a bonus, but there are films that have a re-watchable design to them that don't necessarily make them "better made films" in the end. For example action special effects elements lend themselves to "wow how did they do that...sequence must watch and enjoy again" factors over say the well crafted narrative of Kings speech.

I think true lies has more fun entertaining things going on that lend to re-watchability than the more straight forward thriller with action that is speed. Scenes like Jamie Lee curtis dancing and such. Speed has some thrilling sequences but that's mostly it. Moreover it's has a mystery structure to it which lends itself to a once revealed not as effective paradigm.

I actually believe this is way people like bay almost never make straight action dramas but instead choose to infuse tons of scenes/sequences of say humor that people can revisit. Mo Money.

TBH, I love both movies. I thought it was hillarious that Siskel & Ebert gave Speed two thumbs down when it first came out, but two weeks later (after it had kicked some box office ass and all the fans said they loved it), went back and changed their minds, giving it two thumbs up. LOL!

And I never understood why so many people pan True Lies as being sexist and racist. It's a silly action/spy movie about Arnold taking on terrorists! Don't take it so damn seriously!

Anyway, as much as I love both films, my vote has to go with True Lies.

its funny that you say that because I just checked out of morbid curiosity and Speed has much high scores than True Lies on Rotten tomatoes (90% vs 76%) and Metacritic. Is there something about True Lies that might appeal more to fanboys? Maybe its Arnold?
Although I have to say I have watched both movies only once (or maybe twice), so the argument that true lies has greater rewatchability doesn't apply for me.

I love classic Arnold action movies from the 80's but True Lies despite having James Cameron direct as an homage to James Bond spy films just dragged a little too long, the whole Jamie Lee Curtis subplot is what put me to sleep and thinking that JLC could be all sexy and what not just made me barf and after I looked at my puke I barfed again.

Now Speed is where it's at, great music score, great pace and excitement, this is the type of action movie that Arnold or Stallone could've done.

It's Arnold. Arnold with Cameron = awesome. Arnold without Cameron = awesome. Cameron without Arnold = overhyped bull****.

This is true, the scores are why I figured I'd give this thread a shot. Speed simple gets better scores where ever you look(plus it made more money). You really can't trust critics though.

But Fan boys are a different beast all together.
But hey, maybe in this one case, they aren't actually looking for Shakespeare...

It's Arnold. Arnold with Cameron = awesome. Arnold without Cameron = awesome. Cameron without Arnold = overhyped bull****.

Cameron is one of the only people that knows how to use Arnold.
