If so then some of us are in serious trouble. I'll have dreams that completely contradict previous dreams or have totally different meanings or implications depending on whatever factors are at play during that time. It's one thing to say follow your dreams; it's quite another if you really try to follow all of them.

Common psychological theory. Dreams probably do provide an obscure look into our unconscious, but they can be as simple as reflecting whatever media may be playing as you sleep - music, television, a conversation between others. Even then, though, it deals with the unconscious as you're not consciously choosing to dream about those things. Lucid dreaming is the only time you actually have some control, but I'm not convinced the concept is legitimate.
