Two New York cops shot dead, execution style

The point is this anti-police sentiment has been building for years, thanks mostly to the actions and abuses of police forces. The recent deaths have just made it reach a new level. You can't then blame the mayor when someone snaps and kills two police officers.

I think most problems in this world are due to the hypocrsies of people.

Most problems in this world come from two simple things: stupidity, and a lack of communication. People make hasty, stupid decisions. Not everybody mind you, but a lot of people do. The thing is, for those people, I don't think they realize (or probably care) the far reaching ramifications of their actions.

Props to the NY Giants and the Yankees.

HC Tom Couglin wearing a black stripe on his shirt today honoring the slain NYPD Officers.

The NY Yankees to pay the school costs for the child(ren) of the fallen officers.

This is sickening! I have to worry everyday for my brother-in-law who works in BK.

So I see this is really bringing out the worst in some people. Anyone who would cheer for this is a piece of s***, and the same goes for anyone using this to try to discredit any sort of protesting that is happening on the behalf of Michael Brown or Eric Garner.

This doesn't have to be an either/or. You can acknowledge that this was a horrible thing AND that there is something wrong with our justice system.

Make an example of the shooters, since it is pretty clear that at least one of them is mentally ill. Could use that angle to get our country to reevaluate the stigmas surrounding mental illness. That way anyone looking to use violence will realize that they'll have to deal with the consequences of their actions. Whatever the consequences of their decision to execute the officers may be, it needs to be made clear that violence will not be tolerated.

What could be done, though? I think everyone knows about the consequences of killing a police officer.

There's even perceived consequences that are expected, but never confirmed by law enforcement, like cell beatings or something.

A gentle reminder of the consequences...the consequences being up to the police that are dealing with the situation. I'm not in NY at the protests, so I don't have the information to make a suggestion beyond that.

I don't think there's anything to be done. Nothing more than just reminding people of the tragedy, and how it's a crime. I don't know what more the NYPD can do, really. There's tons of flyers to be found all around New York, on bus stops, train stops, some up with advertisement, too, with the reward money listed, and a phone number, for information on cop killers. I've seen commercials, thought haven't seen one in a long while, and the local news sometimes gives out the reward and hotline information, too.

Anyone going after a cop is already crazy in my book. Can't get through to people with mental illness that leads to violence, other than treatment and medication.

This deserves a re-post.

Isn't it kind of ironic how the policeman that were murdered might not have even been white? Judging by their surnames names it seems one was Hispanic and the other Asian.

Both sides still find ways to sway it so that their side is more in the right though. I've been seeing it all day. A lot of "yes, this is terrible, but let's not forget what caused it" types of comments.

How about we as a species stop blaming each other and stop escalating things? Do these idiots really want the government officials to put their communities in the grips of martial law where anyone can be shot dead with no questions asked? When fear takes over these things tend to happen.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The wider context of what cultural forces played a part in a tragedy is incredibly important.

Only if both sides are willing to own up their responsibilities.

Are we going to be in for months of gotcha? The next cop is killed or a black man is shot or arrested suspiciously?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this.

So, they've reported on things on the local news here. The officers were shot in the car, so it wasn't execution style. Both officers, as they're name indicated, were indeed minorities. The killer posted anti-government messages, including the burning of an American flag, as well as anti-police messages.

He seems to have traveled to and from Baltimore, where he murdered his girlfriend.

Also, Baltimore Police have stated that they were tracking his cellphone after the murder of his ex-girlfriend. They contacted the NYPD, and let them know about the anti-police messages he'd been posting, that he might be targeting police officers, and that he was in the area, even sending a wanted poster of him. But, there seems to be some disagreement between New York and Baltimore PD about the timeline of the information being sent.

Discussing cultural influences can end up with people arguing who is more responsible for this and that.

Look what happened with the housing crisis, it's Dems fault, Republicans fault, no it's Clinton era policy, nope it goes back to Reaganomics.... and we end up with banks still as large as they were and slowly trying to erode any laws to stop them.

It can end up that way, but that doesn't mean we should give up on it. It means that we should be conscious of avoiding petty squabbling.

The title doesn't make much sense. These officers were ambushed, not executed.

Targeted killing, or assassination would be the correct term.

What I'm worried about, especially as a New Yorker, is escalation.

With people like Lynch, and Giuliani blaming Mayor de Blasio and peaceful protesters isn't deescalating the situation. Pat Lynch effectively blames the Mayor for what happened, saying blood is on his hands. Two police officers, and that the blood is on the mayor's hands? Really? The NYPD literally turned their backs on the Mayor when he entered the building yesterday.

The situation isn't being deescalated. I'm not sure where that will leave us, if things keep getting ratcheted up.

Right now, through internal memos from the union (again, probably from Lynch) claims the NYPD is, and will behave, in "Wartime". So, the NYPD believes they are now a Wartime police force.

Escalation. That is something the entire country needs to worry about right now. We need Batman.

Yeah, it's safe to say the NYPD will retaliate.

A lot of people are worried that de Blasio will give the NYPD the go ahead to retaliate by cracking down hard on the protestors. I'm worried about that, but I'm also worried that de Blasio will be firm in telling them no, and they'll go ahead and do it anyway. A total breakdown in the chain of command in New York City's municipal government would make things so much worse.
