The bill has overwhelming public and bi-partisan support and will most likely pass today. The unfortunate part is that Bush has openly expressed that he will use his first veto as president to block this. How do you guys feel about it?

as long as abortion is legal, stem cell research ought to be, too. simple as that. why should we not do it? because pepole don't like to think about dead babies being used in expiriments? get over it. it'll help alot of people someday.

I think it's deplorable that one man's own personal issues will be used to kill the possibliity of something with so much promise to help so many people that the vast majority are in favor of. Public servants should represent the public, IMHO, not their own interests.

That's exactly how I feel about it. Someone should ask Bush why he's anti-cure.

seriously... what excuse could he have for not wanting to do it?

he'd rather just throw the fetuses away, than use them to help people? why? that's just wastful.

if anything, maybe they can make it a woman's choice. like being an organ donor?

it's not just aborted fetuses, either. there's miscarriages, birthing deaths and all kinds of other ways to get ahold of healthy stem cells. it's really disappointing to see one man squash something that has the potential to help so many people.

The Christian and the aspiring scientist in me are conflicting over this issue :(

i think you can be a christian and still support this, i think.

I'll never understand the logic of not using the stem cells for research. If they dont go for research, they'll be destroyed anyway eventually.... When Chris Reeve was still alive I had always hoped he'd rise up from his wheelchair to choke some sense into Bush like he did to Zod

In five years the U.S. is going to be so far behind in this technology it won't even be funny. China and Singapore, among others, are making HUGE advances in this field every day. Our government is hamstringing the U.S. in ways they can't even comprehend.

Just the fact that it'll lead to us interfering where humans shouldn't. I still think it's fascinating though. :(

some religions think that a blood transfusion is "intefering" it's all subjective.
I don't have any illnesess, but many people do, and they and their loved ones are desperate for a cure.

Bush, and people who would support his idiotic Veto can go **** themselves.

I often hear the argument that stem cell research goes against what nature has intended and is therefore an abomination. If that's the case, then all modern medicine should be abolished and outlawed, because it helps people defy nature by avoiding death by sickness or other causes that nature would have them suffer.

The flip side is, is it really something that goes against nature if nature has given us the capacity to develop these things from the materials we have available? It reminds me of that line from the Love & Rockets song: "You cannot go against nature, because when you do it's a part of nature too.".

I've spoken to Nature, and Nature said she expected us to do that, and then she sang me a song, and we ate cheese puffs..

ahh the wonders of LSD.....

I don't see the harm in allowing the research to take place. If the research proves that stem cells can prevent disease, cool. If the research proves that it doesn't, cool. At least find out.

However, it's way too early to say that stem cells are the "magic wonder thing that cures everything".

well said.

Even if Bush blocks it,i can imagine it would happen in some form or another.Stem cells can do much, from what i hear. Its also a new field,i can imagine alot of cures might come out.

If it doesnt pass now,it will someday.Belive that.

is there any non-religious reason to be against stem cell research?

Some people have issues with the ethics involving genetic research, but I think much of that really has religious underpinnings at it's core.

my only question is, why are there more posts on the Bush mic incident than here?
