Many of us are conflicted about this new animated Spider-Man series. Ultimate has always been a controversial title, what with its changes to classic characters. Its also a hot issue for many fans of The Spectacular Spider-Man, a series with a cult following (I called it a cult following because it had very loyal fans but not enough to keep the series going past season 2) which is being replaced by the Ultimate title.

I dont mind there being an Ulitmate Spider-Man series and will check it. Paul Dini doing some of the writing is a big plus, but I'm going to miss the more traditional Spectacular series. The main reason? The excellently portrayed Green Goblin from Spectacular being traded for...Hulk Goblin. :csad:

Other opinions?

I dont think i'll be checking it out. I dont really care for the ultimate universe

That's not why Spectacular was canceled. It was the red tape issues with Marvel properties being produced by Sony when the Disney merger happened. It was just easier for them to start from scratch on Disney than to try and deal with the legal drama.

Anyway, I've actually been really really enjoying Ultimate Spider-Man lately. I mean, I always thought it was more or less okay, with some outstanding moments and some wicked lame moments, but over all just pretty decent. But the more recent stuff has been pretty awesome, in no small part because of the addition of Ice Man and The Human Torch to his supporting cast. That being said, none of that happens until a little over 100 issues into the series, so I expect this series to be kind of lame compared to Spectacular.

Also, somehow Marvel got the TV rights for Spidey back with the Disney deal.

It should be decent the Ben 10 shows are decent.

I'm of mixed opinion on this show. I understand, partly, why TSSM had to end. It was mostly an entity of Sony, and Disney/Marvel wanted to cut ties and produce "their" Spider-Man show. Corporately it makes sense, even if creatively it killed a great show, the best Spidey ever had, in it's prime.

The USM cartoon in theory has a solid core of talent involved. Brian Bendis is working on a production role, but Paul Dini will be writing for it as well as the "MAN OF ACTION" writing team, which includes Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle. They're all comic book vets but on TV their greatest accomplishment is BEN 10, which has released about 7 seasons worth of episodes (well over 100 episodes) within 5 years across three incarnations on Cartoon Network. GENERATOR REX is also doing well in the ratings. I haven't watched either, though, and hear from someone who does that BEN 10 can be very hit or miss at times. Still, few shows lately have had the staying power that BEN 10 has displayed in the last few years. Both Marvel and DC wish they've had a show as successful as BEN 10 lately.

From an interview Dini gave to MTV, it seems like this may be more of an Ultimate Marvel Team Up show more than a Spider-Man show proper. Dini claimed he didn't want to retread old ground with MJ or Green Goblin, which seems to be that this show doesn't want to redo some of the stories TSSM did, which is wise since TSSM did air on Disney XD lately. More heroes have been promised and it may be Marvel's more official answer to BRAVE AND THE BOLD. The biggest problem is Marvel insists that Ultimate is still a hot brand, when it's at least four years past it's prime and is really in a zombie stage; the books sell too well to cancel, but they have ten years of their own continuity to follow and there's no creative reason for it to exist. On the plus side, for people fearing that this show would try to revisit things Greg Wiesman did, it doesn't seem to want to, and may focus more on the superhero stuff than the teen soap stuff. That is appealing for some.

I'll give it a chance. That's about all I promise.

I'm giving it a chance. The creative team behind it is amazing. :)

I liked Ultimate Spider-Man. It was a fresh take that allowed classic stories to be revisited and reinvented with a fresh spin without being drowned by forty years of mythology. Unfortunately, around issue 80 or so it began to suck, bad. It became ridiculous. It tried so hard to be different that it began using ridiculous and nonsensical stories. This kinda culminated with Ultimatium, and now it seems to have become an Ultimate version of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. If they can stick to the early stuff, it should be okay.

.Hulk Goblin. :csad:

see thats the magic words that piss me off, i still to this day i do not understand bendis way of thinking

ult carnage i can understand, it was his way of sticking the middle finger up at the few carnage fans cause of his hatred for the character, but hulk goblin is just mornonic

It seems Paul Dini and others wanna do their take on a modern Spider-Man, not just an adaption of the comic book. Spectacular Spider-Man was a good mix of Ultimate and Mainstream, this one seems to be more about Ultimate & His amazing friends mix.

Norman and Bruce both tried to work on the Super Soldier Serum, hence the simualarity with both becoming huge green monsters.

a crappy excuse doesn't excuse a crappy idea

by that logic anyone from the ult universe who had links to the serum( and there was quite a few) should be running around hulking out

What did they have in it that was taken from Ultimate besides Kong?

Well right now i can only think of the Hulked out people who we're connected to the serum. I do think Ultimate Leader also had connections to the serum, but yeah his head just Hulked out. :D

I love Ultimate Spider-Man (have all the issues in either TPB or individual issues). So I welcome this new animated series with open arms. I wasn't too happy with SSM animation anyway.

For the umpenth time, you seem to have a trouble with DESIGN, not ANIMATION. The animation in TSSM was great.

myself being one of those

Hulk Goblin, Gwen Stacy Carnage, Magneto Ock, Reality Show Kraven...Bendis your villains suck.

I know. It's not easy to **** up Spider-Man villains. Yet somehow Bendis does it.

But I'm giving this show a chance. With Dini involved it gives me hope.

You forgot his lame, purple Shocker, his Parker Clone Scorpion, his female Parker Clone Spider-Woman, his Omega Red (!), and on and on the suckitude goes. He's racked up a higher "hype to lack of talent ratio" than John Bryne did at his most terrible, because at least Bryne had well over a decade of quality before hitting the skids. Unfortunately, Bendis sells well and his books are always important, so he remains number one.

I apologize if I sound dumb or what not, but has Dini ever done anything outside of DC Comics?

I really like Ultimate Spider-Man. I got this huge hardcover at Barnes and Noble a few years ago that had to have been 4 pounds, it collected like the first couple years. Didn't really keep up on it though, not much of a Marvel fan so I usually just get graphic novels that catch my eye.

The Spectacular Spider-Man was a good show, I would have loved for that to continue. The CGI series was good too, seems that they keep canceling them huh?

I liked USM villains. I thought they were good... even Hulk Goblin.

Kraven in Ultimate spider-Man was cool, his introduction and first fight with Spidey over in NJ was great. Spidey though he was some random nutjob.
