The Safdie brothers did it again. Adam Sandler is amazing in this movie. For sure in my top five performance of the year. I wish Sandler would do more movies like this, he shows that he got the talent with the right director to be great.
Was checking various showtimes today to maybe watch something real quick before the influx of relatives come in town, and I was gonna check out this out and next two showtimes for the night are already sold out, whereas Star Wars still has seats available. Huh.
I think Good Time is a better movie overall, but I still really enjoyed this. Adam Sandler gives a great performance in this, and even though the character is a complete a hole you do still want to somewhat see him make it out in the end. I also thought KG was pretty great in this as well which is probably the biggest shocker, but I loved his scene with Sandler towards the end at the jewelry store. The Safdie Brothers have real talent man and are definitely the kind of directors you want to look out for over the next 5 to 10 years.
Oh and Julia Fox is ****ing gorgeous and a pretty damn solid actress.
Uncut Gems is two hours of tension, angst and stress. Man I haven't felt this uncomfortable (in a good way) at the movies in a long time. It just piles one nerve-wracking situation on top of another and it doesn't let up until about 3 minutes left in the film. The trailers pretty much give away the plot, but you really don't fully understand how unnerving this film really is until it gets going about 10 minutes in. The writing and acting here is superb. Adam Sandler is a phenomenal actor when given something great to work with and he definitely got that here. This is probably the best work he has done, he definitely could catch some award season love from this movie. He makes you truly care about this Howard Ratner guy, which is no small feat, because make no mistake, this character is a 100% jerkbag, however I have never wanted a jerkbag to win more than this dude's character in this movie.
This movie is also evidence of how good directing and editing really make a film work as the pacing of the narrative was pretty frenetic, there's a whole lot going on and happening fast, but you never felt confused, everything flows pretty smoothly. The rest of the cast, Lakeith Stanfield, Judd Hirsch, even Kevin Garnett, all solid, but Julia Fox (newcomer and drop dead gorgeous babe) was a pleasant surprise. I initially thought she was a throwaway character, but she really brought some acting chops to this movie and really played off Sandler excellently. There is one scene in the middle of the film (I'll just call it the "crying scene" for those who have seen it) that is absolutely hilarious and shows she really can act. I'll probably watch this one again before it leaves theaters. Really enjoyed this one.
The only thing I really disliked was was the score, especially during the first 10 minutes when we are following Howard during his morning routine. Just didn’t mesh with the scene and was too jarring.

The first 10 minutes of this movie were so damn chaotic that I was honestly kind of worried that it was going to be that way for the rest of the movie, but I'm so glad that this didn't turn out to be the case.
This is movie to me that isn't bad...but it's just not for me.
Sandler was great, but I couldn't get jiggy with his character. He was just too stupid. And I know he's a gambling addict and I get it's an illness. But for whatever reason I just can't with gambling addicts on TV or movies. THey're just too stupid for me to latch on to the characters.
And then besides Sandler? The characters were unlikable, uninteresting, or both. His gf was hot but not that interesting, slept with a married man, cheated on her current bf. Idina Menzel wasn't really given anything to do. Lakeith Stanfeld was ok I guess. KG was kinda interesting to watch just because he's a non actor was actually ok in the role.
Idk. Maybe it's the combination of them, other than Sandler not being interesting either. Because I can deal with things with all unlikable characters. But this just didn't jive with me.
And then also the way they handled dialogue in this movie was super annoying. I get it. It's NY. But it was annoying.
Also I thought the ending could've been better handled. I would've had
Howie live and get the money, but either his girl or his wife gets killed and have to live with the guilt. Having him die was kinda...meh. I mean it made perfect sense (again he was so ****ing stupid). But so his girl has the money, but she's not gonna be able to keep it. The wife is probably gonna get it eventually. Or the mistress might get killed for it. The gangsters know what she looks like.
In short, it's a good movie. Just not for me.
Sandler deserves an Oscar nod, but other than that and the score this is nothing special to me at all
