Universal Monsters

Now that's thinking outside of the box. :o

I have an old high school drawing somewhere of the Universal Monsters facing off against Cthulhu. I would never want to see the idea brought to the silver screen as I don't want to see the Monsters as heroes, but if it's just a monster brawl I'm all for it.

Universal’s #VanHelsing reboot enlists scribes Jon Spaihts and Eric Heisserer http://bit.ly/1ROIZSD

Scribes Jon Spaihts and Eric Heisserer have signed on to co-write Universal’s “Van Helsing” reboot as the studio continues to develop its classic monsters universe.

Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan will produce the film. Universal’s new production endeavor will expand and unify a network of classic monsters; it is led by narrative architects Kurtzman and Morgan.

The interconnected slate of monster films will begin with a reboot of “The Mummy” and how Van Helsing would work into the rest of the universe is still being mapped out.
Plot details are unknown at this time. The studio has already said its first film in the monster universe, “The Mummy,” with be set in present day, but there’s no word yet on when “Van Helsing” will take place.

The character first appeared in Bram Stroker’s “Dracula” and dedicated his life to killing the monster. In 2004, Hugh Jackman starred in a film adaptation in which Van Helsing was made out to be a monster hunter, not only hunting Dracula but having run-ins with Frankenstein and the Wolf Man.
Similar to the Marvel and “Transformers” universes, Spaihts and Heisserer were among a handful of writers Uni assembled for its monster universe writers room, with Spaihts also penning “The Mummy.”

Spaihts’ recent credits include “Doctor Strange” for Marvel and the Jennifer Lawrence-Chris Pratt sci-fi drama “Passengers,” while Heisserer most recently penned Denis Villeneuve’s “Story of Your Life”.

So... I don't get it. They're doing:

Dracula
Frankenstein
Wolf-Man
The Mummy
Invisible Man
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Van Helsing

... And then this is all leading to one team-up movie?

I hope that the character this time is Abraham van Helsing and that they refrain from using the gadgets that were used in the Hugh Jackman film. Somehow after seeing Dracula Untold they will not be getting back to the original concepts of the Universal Monster classic films.

I'm pretty sure it will be. Hugh Jackman's character was called Gabriel I think.

He was. Sommers apparently didn't think Abraham was manly enough, so he went with the oh so masculine Gabriel (!). Sommers absolutely pissed all over the mythos, no doubt about it. He also made Van Helsing some sort of an immortal fer chrissake.

I like Sommers' Van Helsing. It's a guilty pleasure for me, mainly because of my man-crush on Hugh Jackman.

"narrative architects Kurtzman and Morgan"

Seriously? These two have problems to put together even one mediocre film, now they are narrative architects (how pompous indeed) of the whole Universal Monsters universe...

I would love to see masterfully crafted Universal Monsters universe but with these changes are really slim. But maybe they'll surprise and deliver, so good luck to them, they'll need it.

Just like the Spider-Man Cinematic Universe, I don't see this concept going very far.

Honestly the only properties that can work with the cinematic universe model are Marvel, DC, and Star Wars.

All the monsters have to do is fight each other. That's a "shared universe."

I'm pretty sure that the idea behind Jackman's Van Helsing was that he was the archangel Gabriel in human form.

-His missing memories.
-The reference to Dracula being murdered by "the right hand of God."
-Etc.

Yeah. Only it was the left hand of God, I think.

Man, that movie sucked.

Yeah, Sommers was trying to recapture his Mummy success, and failing BADLY!

I didn't think it was possible for Sommers to make a movie WORSE than Van Helsing, but GI Joe proved me wrong.

My inner 12 year old loves Van Helsing. Stupidity aside I can overlook flaws if I can enjoy myself and they manage to override everything else.

That Dracula movie bombed though, didn't it? I doubt they want to connect it to that.

They haven't decided as they're waiting to see if The Mummy reboot is a success then they'll get Luke Evans to cameo in it.
