Del Toro To Resurrect Frankenstein?

Frankenstein and Bride of Frank are two of my favorite horror movies..ever. I think Karloff was part of the equation that made those so fantastic....but I'd love to see a new take.

I just want GDT to take the core concept and themes and then make it his own.

Yeah, I've been waiting on a good remake. I watched the original & then a lot of movies that either featured Frankenstein or was a "remake' & mostly all of them were horrible. I did like Shuler Hensely's performance in Van Helsing though, that is my favorite Frankenstein's monster performance to date. Boris Karloff, believe it or not, is my second favorite.

I agree as well. Van Helsing, I thought was rather poor, but Frankenstein was portrayed quite well. But my favorite version to date, and probably ever, is Young Frankenstein. And conversely, Shuler Hensely also plays Frankenstein's monster in the Young Frankenstein Broadway musical. :woot:

I just want GDT to take the core concept and themes and then make it his own.

Del Toro is one of my favorite directors but after the countless number of Frankenstein films(like Dracula films), I'm not really that excited, coupled with the fact that Del Toro has tons of other films he'll be doing first. It would be like if we were getting another Dracula film, so many have been made, I wouldn't even be excited for it even if it were directed by Spielberg...ok thats a lie but you get the point.:o

But I agree, that is definitely the way to go. I'm with Sands, the Frankenstein story, the mythos, is phenomenal. But I'm not particularly big on Shelly's original book.

Whoa, I didn't know that. I guess it's because I've never wanted to even see it, with all of the horrible remakes out there, I stopped searching for another good Frankenstein movie a long time ago.

Intriguing and I agree that Shelly's novel is not really filmable and I think Kenneth Branagh proved that in the 1990s (a faithful adaptation with great actors, sets, score and cinematography, but a terrible movie).

Still Del Toro has some deep shoes to fill because James Whale already made the definitive Frankenstein films in 1931 and 1935 (Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, respectively) with the iconic lines, images and storylines. When people think Frankenstein they think Boris Karloff and they think of the iconography of Whales and perhaps the sly sense of humor and tragedy of the monster.

In short, good luck.

This is false.

GdT has stated multiple times that he'd love to do Mountains, but no one is too interested in it. So, for the moment, AtMoM is just a wet dream.

Wait, wasn't it confirmed not too long ago that a studio(Warner Bros i think?) finally gave it the green light or something? I forget what the details were, but i'm pretty sure At The Mountains Of Madness is getting made now. I'd prefer to see that much more than Del Toro's take on the Frankenstein story.

That said, i want Del Toro to follow through with his plans for Hellboy 3. Hellboy vs the Universal Monsters. With a script by Mignola. If not a movie, i DEMAND a graphic novel.

EDIT: Yea, here's the confirmation that At The Mountains of Madness IS in fact happening:

Director Guillermo del Toro will follow Hellboy 2 with his longtime passion project, At the Mountains of Madness, reports Latino Review.

The film is an adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novel, which features a chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition's uncanny discoveries–and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization.

Universal Pictures will distribute and AngryFilms' Susan Montford and Don Murphy will produce.

The site adds that Del Toro is still doing Tarzan for Warner Bros., but that script isn't ready yet

I wish that were true.

As of December 20, it's not happening.

"If Mountains of Madness could happen, I would do it in a second," del Toro said in an interview while promoting the upcoming ghost story The Orphanage, which he produced. "But there is no one knocking at my door with the budget, saying, 'Let's make it.'"

Del Toro 'doesn't want Frankenstein in 3D'

Guillermo del Toro has revealed that he doesn't want to shoot his proposed Frankenstein movie in 3D.

Taking part in a Twitter Q&A with Digital Spy, the Pan's Labyrinth director dismissed the notion that 3D doesn't suit cinema, citing Avatar, Toy Story 3 and How To Train Your Dragon as examples of movies that have used the format to good effect.

However, del Toro admitted that he doesn't believe the new technology is suitable for every movie: "I don't want to see Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice and see Mr Darcy in 3D. I don't want to see Wuthering Heights in 3D."

The director admitted that he had no interest in making The Hobbit in 3D when he was attached to the project, and went on to discuss the various movies he has in development.

"I do believe that big spectacle movies like Avatar or At The Mountains Of Madness or The Haunted Mansion should be in 3D," he remarked.

"Frankenstein, I will fight for it not to be in 3D, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde I wouldn't like it to be 3D. Slaughterhouse-Five, I think Kurt Vonnegut would have smiled either way."

Nearly three years and this movie still hasn't started shooting?

Mountains of Madness. I'm pretty sure he has a script. But he probably won't do this until after ATMOM.

At the Mountains of Madness, Frankenstein, and Slaughterhouse Five had better happen, or I will scream.

Yea, i'm fairly certain he's got a draft of Frankenstein ready. According to an interview from a few months ago, he was getting ready to do body casting with Doug Jones. So he's prepping the movie.

The description makes it sound like his own take... WILL NO ONE MAKE AN ACCURATE FRANKENSTEIN FILM!?

Well you see GDT took a wrong turn at Albuquerque and ended up in New Zealand for a period of time.
that's what happens when you ask this guy for directions...
gollum3.jpg

Funny enough, the Monster initially looks something like Gollum until it gets a bit bigger.

EDIT: His eyes are supposed to be yellow though...

Is there concept art of GDT's Frankenstein.

im all for del toro doing a frankenstein movie, if it had the right tone it would be great. but he needs to make hellboy 3 and finish up his trilogy...the actors arent getting any younger

No, but if you wanna get technical, yes. Del Toro has been saying that his favorite version of the creature is the one illustrated by Berni Wrightson and that it's his plan to bring that specific version to life on screen, by Doug Jones.

He initially is looks similar to Gollum and then when he tracks down Frankenstein in the mountains he looks like that picture. I just want it detailed to the point of his eye colour (YELLOW!!!)
