Guillermo del Toro's Van Helsing

Del Toro has a huge number of projects on his plate even after taking off The Hobbit.

One I very much hope to see is his version of Tarzan, which he spoke about a few years ago.

Boo. I wanted his Mountains of Madness movie first. I am sick of vampires, and Cthulhu would be fresh. I already saw a movie with Van Helsing and I have no interest in seeing another, even if it's by a better director.

How about Van Helsing Vs. Cthulhu? Eh, eh?

Cast Bruce Campbell in the lead role and you got yourself a movie every nerd on Earth'd line up to see.

I'm hoping he gets to do Tarzan instead of the version that Sommers is planning to make.

Why Van Helsing? Why not just make a film about Dracula with Van Helsing? There's no point in having Van Helsing as the centre piece of a film, 2004's eye rape proved that.

Thats like saying X or Y character won't work because 1 director failed at it.

Not really. Look at the 2004 film, they had to shoehorn Frankenstein's monster as well as the Wolfman into the story. Which suggests to me that the studio didn't feel a straight forward Van Helsing chasing Dracula plot (with Van Helsing rather than Dracula as the centre piece) would work.

That being said you couldn't get much better than Del Toro being at the helm of this project. I will reserve judgement for now but I am skeptical.

It amazes to this day that no-one has tried to do a faithful adaptation of the novel because if they did it would be a guaranteed winner.

Steven Sommers making Tarzan and Paul Anderson making The Three Musketeers. Someone in Hollywood must hate us.

Expecting to read Uwe Boll remaking Jaws any day now.

I would rather see Del Toro take on a new adaptation of Dracula than do a movie focused entirely on Van Helsing.
Despite the countless films that include Dracula, I have never seen a loyal adaptation of the original book that does it justice.

However I would much rather him leave Vampires behind for now and do "At the Mountains of Madness" or "Frankenstein" next.

I'd like to him to do Hellboy III next. The actors ain't getting any younger. All the other projects can wait, imo.

A Van Helsing VS Dracula movie in a similar spirit to the early Hammer movies would be awesome. It would take a really good actor to fill Cushing's shoes, however, as he is easily the best Van Helsing ever. Best Dr. Frankenstein as well.

I'm all for this. I already know this will be better than the 2004 film. I enjoy it as stoud entertainment on some low level. And it's the movie where I fell in love with Kate Beckinsale so there's always that...

But anyway, this could be cool and different. It's just this is about his four hundreth thing he's developing.

Agreed, tie up his vision of Hellboy, then he can work on the 20 things in development he has.

This guy really needs to slow down with the mountain of projects he has and just pick one. It's just a shame he wasted so much time on something that'll probably never happen when he could've been doing any of these (particularly Frankenstein). :csad:

I also want Hellboy III first. Ron Pearlman is 60ish and Hellboy III can't wait another 5 years to get started.

Why does Van Helsing get all the kudos, thats what i wanna know?

Hw much more intersting would it be if we were talking about Del Toros "Renfield" or "Harker".

Peter Cushing proved you could be an older, distinguished, English gentleman and still be an action hero kicking vampire ass. He is the mold for Van Helsing.

I really think it has to do with Cushing's take on the character that has raised his status. If you haven't seen any of the Hammer horror films with Cushing as Van Helsing, you should. He really sells it.

You know what? I don't care what Del Toro is making next, just as long as he's behind a camera yelling 'action!' ASAFP.

BTW, since del Toro is free, it does makes me wonder about his slate and the possibility of a superhero film for him in the future.

I don't think del Toro is interested in the more mainstream "superhero" adaptations...plus he's done Blade II, two Hellboys (with a third is seeming less and less likely every day), and years back I believe he was offered Fantastic Four...among a few other things. You can see what he gravitates towards...and it's not "Captain America"...

Anyone can surprise you, but one of the only "hero" comic book adaptations I could see him latching onto anytime soon is Dr. Strange...

And as you know, he's pretty tied up with his Universal slate at the moment...

12-Jun-2010 - EXCLUSIVE: GDT on VAN HELSING and other rumors
by Parker Lyons

I got an email from Guillermo today - he wanted to go on the record on the latest internet rumors, specifically the VAN HELSING rumor as first reported by Pajiba.com.

Here is Guillermo's official statement:
Van Helsing (writing and producing) is still in talks and not quite certain. Even then, I would like to share my plans only at COMICON. I am taking it slowly and marking very, very carefully the calendar of projects that I will be involved as producer, writer, etc I will not announce the project I intend to direct until then . I am very happy to say that all the projects and partnerships being considered are both quite surprising and, I hope, powerful. Much as I want, I cannot say much more at this time but I anxiously await to share these with you. I will be shopping on the floor in San DIego for several days. See you there!!
So there you go - don't expect to hear anything for certain about Guillermo's next project until the San Diego Comic Con, July 21-25.

Do we really need another movie about vampire hunters?

Del Toro should instead make the sequel to Solomon Kane.

If he is announcing his next project at Comicon...here is to hoping it is Hellboy III:awesome::awesome::awesome::awesome:
