Universal Pictures has bought the rights to thriller spec Fiasco Heights, written by writer Kyle Ward, and has set it up with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes.

Variety says Bay will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Chris Bender, JC Spink and Mason Novick are executive producing; Steve Shin co-produces.

The story, which occurs in a stylized "hyper-real" noir environment akin to that of Sin City, centers on a notorious hitman who teams with a failed private eye in search of a missing woman and an invaluable briefcase.

Previous Platinum Dunes pics include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

The company launched production in February with Mandate Pictures on Horsemen, a crime thriller starring Dennis Quaid and Ziyi Zhang. It aims to begin shooting a remake of The Birds for Universal by the end of the year.

Cool sounding concept,i wonder if Bay will direct as well.

Sam Bayer Helming Fiasco Heights

Music video and commercial director Sam Bayer has signed on to direct the action-thriller Fiasco Heights for Universal, says The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing via their Platinum Dunes.

In the project, which also has shades of film noir, a gunman returns to the crime-ridden city of Fiasco Heights and teams with a degenerate gambler/private eye on the run from a syndicate to look for a beautiful femme fatale and a mysterious briefcase. Kyle Ward wrote the most recent draft.

Chris Bender and J.C. Spink are executive producing via their Benderspink banner alongside Mason Novick.

Bayer is attached to direct Rogue's remake of Near Dark, which Platinum Dunes also is producing.
