I was at a loose end last night so bought the Universal Solder DVD and watched it for the first time in a few years.

Yes it's cheesy in parts but the Van Damme/Lundgren fights are great, and it has that certain something that makes it a pleasure to rewatch. Some films of the late 80s/early 90s were critically panned (Predator and this for starters) but I never get tired of watching them despite their flaws.

Shame they killed the franchise with a number of dodgy sequels, IMO there was a great basis for sequels to explore what happened to Luc Deveraux after this film if they had been written a bit better.

The DVD I watched also has an alternate ending which they filmed .......................... ewwwwwwwwww. Total rubbish. Glad they stuck with the original ending.

I always loved the original movie, a great early 90s Action romp for sure. While there's the feeling it wasn't utilized to it's full potential, it's always a blast to watch and one of those movies that always brightens a day. The only one of the sequels I saw was The Return and I recall it being absolutely abysmal. Never saw the other sequels, but I've heard Regeneration actually isn't bad. I want to see it, sometime. I do think it had potential for an ongoing series and am surprised it never became a bigger property, with merchandise like comics, novels, etc. (outside of the novelization and comic adaptation, of course).

On a related note, anyone remember the Genesis video game? It was basically Turrican II: The Final Fight rebranded to be an official US game. I have it and it's quite fun, keeps you playing for more for sure.
