I'm not a member of any techy forums but I thought someone here will probablly know how to help me.

iTunes 8.2.0 told me there is a new version to install so I went to apple to get the .exe file to update to iTunes 8.2.1. When I run the file it starts up like normal runs through a few things then an error message pops up saying, "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

The only programs I have running are Windows and the installer so I don't know what the problem is.

Anyone able to help me?

I was gonna uninstall iTunes with the add/remove programs option in the control panel but I'm afrade my library will get wiped, I can't have this coz I don't have the MP3's anymore thanx to a broken external hard disk.

Backing up iTunes is easy.
Literally COPY the entire folder in My Music (since I am not sitting at my iTunes machines not entirely sure of the foldername) Copy the entire folder from My Music that is something like iTunes Library or something, to another part of your hard drive.

Uninstall iTunes...
reboot
delete any "lingering data" in the spot where iTunes should point to (not the manual backup you made"
install new iTunes
Copy the iTunes copy you have to the location on your PC where its located once more.

Done...

Make sure to kill iTunes and restart it so it recognizes the changes made to the library

I wans planning on trying this at the week end but now my laptop has a new damned problem. I turn it off and Windows trys to do 12 up-dates but gets stuck on up-date 2 for ever till I just have to hold the power button.

This happened once before and then out of the blue it seemed to fix itself but now I think it just forgot about it till more up-dates came along. :(
