*deep breath*
Ok, so I recently bought a new iPod off my friend, and I was hoping I wouldn't have to upgrade my iTunes which I basically didn't want to for the longest time. Apple has always given me enough problems so I kept my software the same for quite a while.
But anyways this new iPod was only compatible with the newest iTunes software so I downloaded the iTunes pack from Apple.com and began to install it. And I get this familiar little message I remember from the last time I tried to install a newer iTunes (which is exactly why I chose to not try and upgrade) But the message is...
"A newer version of Quicktime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of Quicktime is installed."
Then the- "The installation of Quicktime did not complete successfully. iTunes requires Quicktime." when closing.
I've searched and read through tons of forums in trying to solve this problem that makes no sense at all when you read out the error message, I mean come on, "did not complete because a newer version of the required software is already installed" What the hell is that?
But anyways, the most common solution to this I've come across is uninstalling/deleting all the software/files on your comp that have anything to do with Apple/iTunes/Quicktime, and some small quicktime files in the system32 folder in WINDOWS (which I couldn't find anyways). I've uninstalled all of these things, searched my computer for files, uninstalled some (I guess you can say) "similar" software like Media Player Classic (which is a Quicktime Alternative I believe) and nothing has allowed me to move forward in the installation.
Some of the uninstallations I've done caused me to lose some of my video playback abilities because of lost video codecs, so even more problems. But I did make a small list of the codec packs I chose to uninstall in case they were that big-a-deal but it's still more work for me, ehh.
So, a few notes and things I have done already, and will probably have to try again soon anyways
(My comp is on Microsoft Windows XP with a Service Pack 2)
- Searched PC for files with the words Quicktime, Apple, iTunes, and deleted them
- Downloaded and tried to install a standalone version of Quicktime, still running into the same error.
- Downloaded WIndows Installer Cleanup which is almost exactly the same as Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, except more efficient I guess.
- Threw a phonebook across the room because of how frustrating this if when it shouldn't be.
- Searched through my WINDOWS/system32 folder for those quicktime files that apparently solve this ''common'' problem.
- Unplugged my external hdd to see if maybe my hdd was causing some kind of conflict with something.
Now, I'm quite sure that this won't be able to get fixed overnight, but all the help I can get is greatly appreciated and I'm hoping some of you can stick with me as I get this worked out. I know there are some great brains around here. I tried going solo on this for a bit, but it's pretty obvious I'm missing something else.. Or actually, I just don't think Apple likes me very much either. I would like to put some music on this freaking thing, and I wouldn't mind getting some of my video playback abilities back in the process either. *massages temples*
