has anyone done this and is it easy enough, i'm running out of space and was looking into it. but honestly i don't want to fubar up my console, can't afford a new one.

I upgraded mine to a 160gb. Originally had a 60gb. Was pretty easy

can it be any hard drive that meets the requirements. i called into a laptop shop to check prices, and got told it could only work is it was a sony designed hd for the ps3.

yet every site i've been to has said any decent 2.5 sata 5400rpm hd

Any 2.5 SATA HD will work. Sony didn't even make a specific HD for the PS3. Order one from newegg.com, you're going to pay at least double if you buy one from a store.

i'm in the uk mate so i don't know if new egg will work

i seen a western digital 320GB on for £50 around $80

cheers guy's i'll pick it up at the weekend hopefully it works out fine

why is it everything you want need always comes out around the same time.

When it rains it pours my friend.

If you have any questions when you get it, feel free to ask. The link I provided above should cover everything though.

I would get a 5400 rpm bc thats what I beleive the PS3 is shipped with.

That's why I went with the one I got. I will say though that several people have gone up to 7200 with no problems. Better safe than sorry I always say.

The one you listed says 7200.

Do I just go ahead and lose all my saved games if I upgrade, or can I transfer them in any way?

Ooops. I just fixed it. I put the wrong link.

I backed up all my stuff on an external HDD.

Go to System Settings -> Backup Utility.

Also, don't worry about your Trophy's. They are saved on the PSN Server.

only after you sync it up though. Make sure to do that before removing the hard drive. Backing up your data should give you a prompt to do so

What's the best kind of external HDD to back up you data on?

The owners manual you get with the ps3 it tells you how to change the hard drive.

And if all else fails, (and if you're a visual learner), just head over to youtube and do a search for "upgrade ps3 hard drive", there's dozens upon dozens of instructional videos on how to swap it out and upgrade.

as somebody who backed up his data onto an external drive i will give you guys some tips.

drive must be set up with a FAT32 partition, or the PS3 will not 'see it' you can do this under disk management in windows. right click on my computer, select manage and then when the box opens up select disc management. you should see your external drive if it is plugged in and turned on (some enclosures for HDs have a on/off switch if it is powered by a AC cord). you should be able to right click and (only if the drive is empty) remove the partition. then add a new one it will open up the windows partition wizard follow the prompts and set up a partition for FAT32. when done you will have to format then right click again and set it as active. when all this is done you should be able to plug in your drive to the PS3 and it will 'see it' when you access the back up utility. If you back up your data and are only swapping to a larger size when you back up it will back up all your saves, any pics and videos you saved (video you have downloaded from the PSN store) and games that required installs as well. it even saves your 'wallpaper' if you had one. the only time you lose things is if you back up data and recover it to a DIFFERENT PS3. you still get your saves and pics, etc but you will lose the installed game data. you will have to re do any games that required them to be installed before you play them again.

Hey guys...I'm looking to upgrade my PS3 hard drive. I've been running on my 60gb for a long time and i've finally run out of room do to all the installs and what not. I'm looking for a very reliable but awesomely priced 320-500gb hdd...any recommondations?

Plenty of space. You will love it.

You're welcome.

Wow. I'm still going on my 80gb. I can't imagine ever using up 320. At least not with the amount of gaming I do.
