I was scanning through the frontpage of the USAtoday site to look for something else, found this:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-06-22-superman-main_x.htm

He/she seems to praise Reeve for looking overly 'muscular' and 'beefy' in the first 1978 film  and says Brandon looks 'young' and 'a stark contrast to yesteryears bulky, ebullient images of SUpes' as Superman (though this isnt from someone whos seen and reviewing the movie).

Young?...maybe

A stark contrast to Chris' build as Superman? Dont make me laugh.

Whether it was the suit or not, his build (on screen) is the same as Chris from that film, if not more defined.

Wow just wow did it ever occur to you we love SR folks that maybe just maybe some people will actually think he looks to young or not muscular enough I mean its been a year + people have been voicing that concern.

And while you post pictures that make him look favorably musclar maybe they were looking at one that does not make him look as musclar. (still young looking to be the father of a 5 year old but hey Lois looks even younger IMO anyways)

Seriously can we stop all the bashing of people who have concerns or gave bad reviews its really getting old and tiresomeand does not show the pro SR folks in a good light.

This article btw is from someone who wrote that article (which isnt a review) and hasnt seen the film.

Just pointing that out but it seems this Reeve VS Routh competition is on in the eyes of the media.

Anyways, Superman wasnt supposed to have aged from when he left to his return. He was in that cryogenic stasis pod on the ship (according to the novel and Topp cards) and Ive seen it in the pictures/stills also...So I'm guessing hes still late 20s or 30.

the suit doesnt do him any justice, that high neckline and short shorts gives the visual impression of being slender. If they opened up the collar like on Reeve's suit you probably wouldnt be hearing people say things like this.

do the Topps cards explain how Lois de-aged?

Too big too small...too young too old...I wish people would give it a rest. See the movie then make your arguement. And "he's not built" and "he's not old enough"...yeah same remarks made with Reeve back then. I even remember a bunch of folks saying the same thing only about a year ago.

Everyone here seems to know everything there is about costume design, bodybuilding, computer generation, flying on wires. I think it's time to give it a rest. If any of us had a real opinion worth a damn...we would be working on the film and not b****ing on a message board.

I dont know about that. Ive seen maniped pictures of him in an open collar widenick suit. It makes him look alot more feminine and less threatening, didnt like it.

The underwear though, I never thought about that. All the previous Superman's underwear just looked really lame (like actual underwear), Brandons looks more like a swimsuit.

They really went to a process of modernizing this suit so it didnt look as silly as the old versions, whether that worked for the actor or not is debateable but........Brandon in bright red underwear or granny panties and in a leotard....wouldnt be cool.

I think they dodged a speeding bullet with that (bc while that looks dreamy to comicbook fans)...the general public would never take it seriously.

I don't know about you, but I'm GLAD Lois doesn't look like an aging Margot Kidder.

Or even a young Margot Kidder, for that matter.

do people need to see the movie to comment on his visual appearance from the deluge of photos we've all seen? The plot and things specific to the film maybe, but I dont think you need to be an expert on costuming, bodybuilding, etc to have an opinion on how the guy looks. You dont think the non-fans out there, who are seeing the ads are doing the same things?

Nope. Just use your imagination with Kate. It isnt a direct sequel and she doesnt have to look like a hag like Kidder did.

Then again, do you honestly think Kate will look drastically different when she actually gets into her late 20s/ maybe 30........Probably not. I can tell by her features that she wouldnt age as much, barely be noticeable.

No they dont, I just thought it may be interesting how the article writer also compared Brandon's 'youthful' appearance to young soldiers serving overseas

I mean....w t f

I just found alot of funny exaggerations in the article.

just some basic fashion things, the high neck line combined with the smaller shorts on the hips gives his torso an elongated appearance. They design a lot of women's fashion in a similar manner with high necklines to give them a sleeker look, they also do things like have a low hanging belt ,etc. . I'm by no means an expert on women's fashion, but I am married to one who knows nothing of comics, and that was her 1st comment upon seeing it

I wouldnt know much about that stuff either but still, I dont think they really had much of a choice in this case.

The wide open neckline would definately make Brandon look more on the 'prettyish, feminine cupcake' side from what Ive seen. Big bright red underwear probably would make him looking like a joke to the jaded youth of today (me being one of them). If I wasnt a comicbook fan (and I wasnt up until this year) I would have laughed if he wore the other suit.

It did need to be modernized, but yes.. at the expense of making Brandon look 'longer' from neck to waist.

Personally I think its a small price to pay if it makes that suit cool to todays generation, despite if it alienates the hardcore comicbook fans who wanted Brandon is Chris' costume.

You know what...you're right and I'm wrong. I honestly dont give a **** anymore. Everyone on here either wants to complain about the film or praise the hell out of it. No one wants to talk about anything. Oh everyone claims to be level headed and unbias. Well that's just bs. I'm tired of the sophomoric whining and complaining on both sides. This place isnt fun. It's a bunch of kids ( no matter your age) in a pissing contest to prove your opinion is better than everyone elses.

I don't want to hear it anymore. This is the same tired arguement from a year ago. Hell we even had a Tom Welling thread pop up this week. Is this because I love the film no matter what. NO If it sucks it sucks. But one thing I see is no one is offering up anything new. If you are still complaining about the suit or his physique? Are you serious? Why dont we start comparing Cavill again. I'm tired of it. This is just pointless now. I'm out of here...I'm done. I dont even get to spend much time on here anymore and I'm already sick of it.

Cry me a f***ing river and go bring up the same s*** somewhere else. Just as long as you don't follow me. I'm through with it. People actually got me agrivated with a message board? Ugh...to hell with you all for making me give a damn. I just wanted to see a movie.

Goodbye hype.-----Yeah I said it and I came back. Oh like that has never happened before! If you don't like it.....ask if I care.

Well for me I think the suit looks ok I am still not a huge fan of it for one main reason unlike the previous versions which at least IMO the underwear part looked to be part of the suit in the older versions and it looks almost like the new look underwear almost looks like they are put on after the suit.

Probably just an optical illusion type ofthing I am seeing.

Routh is more defined than Reeve, yet Reeve was bulkier!

Just sharing my thoughts, explode. Just sharing my thoughts.....

This man makes a good point!

He was bulkier by Superman III, thats about it. Routh's definition comes from the suit.

The only real difference Reeve has over Routh is a naturally wider neck, but it makes no real differnece if Routh isnt wearing a wide neck collar (which he isnt).

The biggest difference between the two is Routh's hourglass upper body, it really makes him look smaller. It would probably be less significant if Singer let Routh put on more weight.
