Here's some quotes from an article in SFX magazine, from Singer and Spacey and the writers.

Spacey interview

Did you go back and look at what Gene Hackman did in the old superman movies?

"Yeah, i watched the other ones, but not with any sense of wanting to reference them, because this is a very different lex luthor. this is a very bitter lex out for revenge. theres still humor but its not the same"

How hard was it shaving your head and was there any question you'd shave it?

"oh that was easy ive done it before. No i think people want their lex bald"

This is brandons first film. you're an establsihed star. how do you build a rapport with him?

"i dont have to - i just have to kick the **** out of him (laughs). he recognises what a remarkable oppertuinity this is for him, as it was for chris reeve, and hes taking that seriously. i always thought it was the right choice to go with an unknown."

Singer Quotes

"it puts the first film into a vague history, the second film is not in my history. its not a particularly good film, either, if you watch it again. We are referencing the first film in the designs and the detail but not over - referencing it."

"the theme will be the same, reorchestrated and reproduced and there are certain themes that id like to put in the movie like the love theme, lois's theme. without them i wouldnt have made the film. they are vital."

On Brando's voice and image in the movie,

"we were able to go into the archives and find the original ADR sessions and the original out-takes. there arnt many, but enough for me to generat what i need. hes not going to be walking around as a character. there will be use of his voice and image in a way that has never been seen before. plus there will be certain vocal takes that will be different from those in the original movie. if your a sharp fan you'll be able to hear that difference. For me, as a fan, its kind of a treat to hear that difference."

"Theres one particular scene where we imply that hes been all around the world at night, saving people in different countries. so when clark shows up for work hes just got a grin on his face, watching the tv monitors 'superman was in paris!' 'superman was in germany!' 'he was in a concinience store!' 'some people think that hes moving faster than the speed of light!'. everyone is watching it except for lois."

"one idea we threw out there was a peter pan kinda thing, where he comes back and lois is in her 40's and hes still young because hes superman and he doesnt age"

"im bringing my own story, my own look. its not new york, its metropolis"

discussing the heat vision effect with a technition - "otherwise its just cyclops"

"My stills photographer took some amazing pictures on the set, and one day he handed me a photo of superman and lois about to kiss and that was the moment i turned the picture around to whoever was in the trailer at the time and said 'this is superman. this is it. this is the movie. weve got the boys, if we get this right we will also get the girls. that picture reminded me of how special this movie can be"

Mike Dougherty

"the weird thing about superman is that he doesnt have a gallery of villans from the comic book universe that the public know about, the villans get thrown to batman somehow"

"people say doomsday is a great villan, but i remember thinking when i read the death of superman, that hes just a big guy made of rock who can beat things up, thats not interesting to me, theres no dimension there. Luthor is great. its like brain vs brawn.

"lex is kina xenophobic. he hates the idea of an alien on earth who has that much power. in his mind hes not so much of a villan but a pro-human."

Dan Harris

"were kinda dealing with bizzaro and Mr Mxyzptlk and it would have taken an incredible amount of creative thinking to get that on screen. we wanted to bring superman back in a stylish and sophisticated way that wont scare people off. theres no time for bizzaro. lets put him back in our world and then get bigger"

1. superman 2 has nothing to do wit hthis movie.
2. there will not be a marlon walking in the FOS
3. superman didnt first showed when he saved the plane

and this is bull****. i have read about this stuff and this is completely different.

its liek singer always changes hes mind and says something different.

so dan and mike are open to bizarro. cool.

Why use Mr. Mxyzptlk? He's too...lighthearted. Why not use Brainaic or Metello?

But I see where they are coming from? Re-Establish Superman and move on from there.

No Superman 2...no romp in the satin sheets! :o

Wow. I know it wouldn't leave much for the sequels and it'd be pretty much a one shot, but I'd've loved to see this...

interesting read..
its interesting because i saw this question already. but the funny part is that they didnt gave the same answers.
its like they want to confuse us.

I would love Bizzaro in one of the sequels.

did you get my pm?

Oh yeah, damn I forgot to reply, sorry.

Thanks for that! It was quite nice wasn't it?

I think Bizzaro would work as a less important villain. Like not the major one or anything, just for something Superman can fight.

Perhaps if they did..he should be as clever as supes.. and change into what we know as the movie unfolds.

No Superman 2!?

Hmm that could be good. No memory kiss. No Zod and friends? Although it could have still happened...a different way.

I wonder how the hell they will make Jason Superman's son when Superman II isnt even in the vague history. Im beginning to doubt theyll actually imply the father.

Whats interesting is BR.com said that the child would be named "Jason White" in the movie....hmm

heey the kid is not from superman :D

I just cant understand Singer's point of view.

He said that SII have some connection with SR as vague story, but now he says another thing.

Oh man, I am tired with all this.

So if Jason isn't Superman's, Lois will not be with Clark? Oh my God, NO!

Its possible. I have a strong feeling the movie wont stress it either way. It will leave it in the realm of possibilities but Jason White will still be in the father position...

I duno...we'll see.

You know I like this. It makes a lot of sense now. I can see bringing in some of the comic book villians in this film and it could get sort of a stigma of just wanting to have big fights and a bunch of CGI...giving it a feel of just another big budget popcorn movie. But you show the general audience that there is a story there. A bigger message that isnt just "Superman punches out the badguy" and you hook them in and get them invested in the character. Then you can throw Brianiac, Bizzaro, etc at them.

I would want a very evil Bizzaro, not the goofy incarnation. :marv:

It also came with a sweet A3 illustrated poster by Bryan Hitch (Ultimates), which can be found in the Superman Pictures thread.

"one idea we threw out there was a peter pan kinda thing, where he comes back and lois is in her 40's and hes still young because hes superman and he doesnt age"

I would have liked to see this, the only question is how they would have handled Clark not aging

He doesn't want to make any real references to superman 2... But it's in superman 2 that Clark sleeps with Lois.. so if the kid is truely his, than there HAS to be a major reference to number 2, right...

ALSO! It's first in superman 2 that Supes and Lois gets romantic! You dont see them really having any kind of a "relationship" until number 2!!! So this is a bit weird...
