I don't know how Veep has done it, but some how, after its original show runner left...it got better. And that is saying something considering it was already the best show on television. Tonight's episode, however, may have been the best episode in television history.
It took a tired formula (mockumentary) and did something no other show using this style (aside from maybe the UK version of The Office) has ever done.it made the cutaways real. Where as usually they are opportunities for ironic jokes, contradictions and the likes, this used it to show the characters, aware of their surroundings, and let them show themselves as they wanted to be seen. Yet, at the same time, it also showed how they truly are with the inadvertent footage. And of course their interactions show them how they are to those around them. It was a brilliantly executed episode.
And none of that speaks to the true brilliance, the way it was built up to throughout the season. Everyone assumed that Catherine's documentary would be released eventually. This subverted expectations and used it in ways no one could see coming. Nearly every scene this season had to have been shot planning to this moment. Looking back now there are so many little hints, each capitalized upon in brilliant ways in this episode.it. Be it the throwaway Mike line about a second secret meeting, or the major stuff like the Tom James sex scene...it all led up to and this, an episode that lets the audience really appreciate the I intricacies of the show.
Some miscellaneous thoughts:
Mike's running story is absolutely heart breaking.
Jonah answering the phone in the elementary school...
I love that Kent is in a Latino motorcycle club
Sue is the only character who is not explored this episode and it is done in a way that fees so damn natural and is far more perfect for her than any talking head could ever be.
