Yeah, I know the kind of person you're talking about, and I'm surprised that they haven't already been in here, foaming at the mouth over it. Personally? I think it suits the character perfectly. I'm reminded of the Batman: TAS episode "The Trial", where Gotham's new DA intends to take Batman down, until the lunatics at Arkham break free and capture both her and Batman. Once she sees what they're truly capable of, she changes her tune, but tells Batman, "But I'm still going to work towards a city that doesn't need Batman." To which Batman replies, "Me too."I meant in terms of the character. Bale said that Wayne's trying to find a way for Batman to end so that he can get on with his life. I'm waiting for the backlash of OMGZ Wayne's committed to being Batman, he would never question it like that, this is so wrong, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
I've always interpreted his mission to be about creating a Gotham where what happened to him as a child wouldn't ever happen to anyone else. Obviously, if that mission is accomplished (either by himself, or by someone like Harvey Dent), then there's no need for Batman any longer.
