Villains: Too sympathetic?

I don't think Ock should have been a sympathetic character.
He should have been a heartless bastard.

Ditto, I always liked Bastard Ock more then Sympathetic Ock. I mean, if they wanted the sympathetic genius scientist who accidentaly turns himself into a monster thing....the lizard's been hanging around for a while.

Sympathetic Ock is more usable in a movie though than the bastard Ock...that's why the sympathetic version is used...it was better in Spider-Man 2 just for the theme alone for the movie...but, then again, he kinda turned into the bastard version when he told Peter to bring Spider-Man for him...so, either way, if a villain is "sympathetic", either way, their "bastard" side will come...just as Sandman, he becomes the meaner version of the villain when the time is needed as of the final battle.

well if you think about it, a sympathetic Villian add's a touch to the story in term's of interest and what not. so as we see in Spidey2, Ock has the mean attitude like he did in the comics. but toward's the end of the film when he got electricuted, they gave him a sympathy type moment for Peter which (to me atleast) was a good idea.

afterall, Sam had to have had a part in translating Doc Ock from the Comic's onto film. not to mention that kids don't want to see Spidey kill somebody (specificly villian's) which would happen with Doc Ock or quite possibly he could have gone to prison. but I think one of the reasons Sam chose the sympathetic route with Ock like is to like XXTBWCXX said, make it match up with the moral of Spidey2 and to be honest......I think it did.

But it's the heroes job to stay good and honest isn't it? The villian should be the opposite.
It just seemed wierd to me in SM2 that Harry came off as more evil than Doc Ock did.
Another thing that is odd, I was more sympathetic to Harry than I was Ock. I felt no sympathy at all to Ock, but I could tell in the film they wanted you to feel that sympathy towards him. To me, Ock just seemed weak. His project failed so he sulked about it, and then when he want's to "redo" the project (instead of trying to correct what went wrong last time) he wonders if he should steal, and when he realizes stealing is wrong the arms convince him to steal. This is why I felt no sympathy towards him. He's weak.

Darth Vader redempted at the end. Did that make him any less a good villain? The Lizard turns good. Sandman turns good. Harry's Goblin turns good.

Does this make them any less compelling as villains??

No.
