Volume/Sound problem

My computer's sound doesn't work. I remember it doing this one other time.
It says, "There are no active mixers available". Then it gives me directions like go to the Other Software and install the mixer. I went there, and everything there is installed properly.

Does this mean that I need some more audio codecs?
Does this mean that I missed a Windows Update?

I just needed to update Windows.
