I think Fuqua can do good work when he has decent characters to work with and a decent story.

He's a poor man's Edward Zwick, peddling mainstream movies with heavy handed simplified messages that are supposely deep :(

^ It's a movie. That's all.

That is the worst argument I've ever heard... I don't mind movies with messages, I dug Blood Diamond, what not... But it's when the movie get so marred by it, and it tries so blatantly to put it in your face it leads to a riduclous unbelieable plot with 2-Dimentional Cartoon Villains and attrocious dialouge, that it does become a problem...

It's not an argument. This is though. :)

Your description above doesn't fit Shooter in any way.

Fuqa stands on his own merits, he has his own style and tone that is completely different from Zwick

Shooter was great, the dialouge no where near perfect was fine, and Ned Betty was great, Danny Glover was a little odd ball, but he still worked out fine...but Whalberg, fantastic, another fine performance for one of my new favorite actors

I was really hoping they sent him to prision in the end though with a "life is tough sometimes you don't get what you deserve" message, and then we could have Shooter 2, where they offer to get him out if he goes Rambo on the bit in Kuwait or something

Here's a nice little quote

"In this great nation, when the secretary of defense cna go on TV and say the war in Iraq is about freedom, it's not about freedom but the american people don't want hear that" Or how about the whole plot being about oil in Ethiopia... That isn't a heavy handed message?

What is Michael Pena famous from before this, it wasn't Crash was it?

He was solid in this I thought

^Pena was in season 4 of F/X's show 'The Shield'.

I just got back from seeing this movie... I gave it a 7/10. Some of the plot points were a little weak, but the action was all good and the political message was loud and clear.

I didn't like the flimsy connection between Wahlberg and Mara, but I've gotta admit she sure was nice to look at. Oh, and Casey Jones just keeps gettin' creepier with age.

It's too bad this film had to open against 300 even in it's 3rd week. That's a hard blow for Paramount because they expected much more. Who could have known 300 would be that hot though and pulling in that much dough. Dont' miss ithis movie though.

Actually, I saw them both in the same night and I'm about to overload from the testosterone

I saw it, i mean its not fuquas best but its not his worst, if your not sure what to see then see shooter, its fun, but a little cliched.

Finally saw this today and i loved it,Wahlberg was oldschool badass in it and Pena gave him good support, the rest of the cast did well with their roles and although the plot was standard shadowy government espionage stuff it was well told and well played out and the ending was perfect, not giving any easy way out.
The action was also badass and crisply shot with Fuqua really making the sniping sequences effective.

8/10
