Nearly twenty years and SR is the best they could come up with. Truly pathetic.

That's funny most poeple think that the CG digi double sucked! Even people in the CG industry were unimpressed.

I'm assuming you know what your talking about, what with having CG in your name and all.

Yea I was dissapointed, but hey I have Bats vs Superman to look forward to. Heres hoping they stick with Bale, and maybe cast someone else for Supes

When do you think we'll get it, if ever?

But Superman is a love story at the core centered around Kal/Clark's love for Lois....it's also a story about searchin for acceptance and devotion to family. I don't understand why this is hard to grasp or accept. Batman is a story about loss and revenge. Spiderman is a story about responsibility. XMEN is a story about overcoming obstacles and being left out because you're different. Hulk is a story about controlling inner demons and rage.

Despite the core story behind Superman he still whoops more ass than all others. In SR Superman performed almost every superfeat he's capable of.....not all, but almost all. In the next film it'll more action, more intensity, more "Superman", but at the core will be the love story.
A love story for the plot. No problem, but I thought it stunk. No chemistry between actors, crap story, crap dialogue.
Personally I think of Superman as a story of an Alien immigrant. Raised on our ideals, but unable to fit in. I guess you could fit that to be part of the "love" story theme.
Note the word "Alien", so it's got to have some sci fi. A lot of sci fi. Not just ice-pops that turn into continents. Even if they never added a supervillain and just lex and the love stuff. I feel it was still unsuccessful and could have been way better with just the plain overal performance and pacing.

Dude.....the Batsuit was mobile. How do you explain that kick he gave the ninja, and the elbow block he did?
Most of it still had to do with the rotation of the head, which is a nitpick I've always had. It was still just a takeoff on Ringwood's original design, but the head turned a little bit more. During the "making of" I watched panned out shots of one of the fights and it didn't look any more mobile to me than the other batsuits. I thought the suit looked cool, but it still didn't allow them to showcase what Bats can really move like. I love BB, though, so I don't even know why I'm b******g about this. Sorry, man.:)

I completely agree. I didn't get a sense of that in SR at all. Don't get me wrong, there were some parts of SR that I loved, but as a whole, it didn't gel together for me. And yes, I was fairly disappointed at the parts that didn't come together.

OTOH, I don't think it's fair to hold such high expectations on a movie that has been in development for 20 years though. I mean, NOTHING can match the hype for something that has been in the works for 20 years. It's almost like waiting for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's kid to grow up a supermodel.

I've heard lots of people (not just on SHH or even the internet) that BB was the Batman movie they had been waiting for, but it isn't the same as knowing it's going to come out and having nothing to do but sit on your hands and wait...It was more like, "Aaah, the Batman franchise is dead...no wait, someone wants to revive it. Cool." It was more of a pleasant surprise than anything else.

Anyway, I'm not saying that I personally waited 20 years for SR - I actually didn't know it existed until last year, when people were comparing it as competition for BB in terms of WB/DC franchises. I don't doubt that there were lots of Supes fans who felt like they waited that long though, and felt extremely let down. Heck, I'm going to wait 2 very very long years for TDK and I'm feeling like, "What if it isn't as good as I hope it will be?" I can't even imagine the kind of disappointment some Supes fans must be feeling if they had truly waited 20 years for this.

OT: the digital effects. I don't do CG personally, but I still feel that it's too soon to render flying human beings with CG, especially in bright daylight. ("Just because you can doesn't mean you should" - one of my favorite sayings. :p ) Most of the flying scenes in SR took place at dusk, and those were beautifully well-rendered. Some of the flying during the plane rescue looked very fake to me. I'm not exactly sure why - I think that the lighting between the subject (Supes) and the sky still needs some work. And for those of you who complained about the darkness, I think that was a logistical as well as a stylistic choice, since CG is exponentially more difficult to do with day scenes. In the BB special features, when they put up a real shot of Bale walking around in the suit next to a shot of a digital double, I could not tell the difference. The fact of the matter is, if you want real-looking CG people at this point in time, you have to have it take place in darkness.

After watching 2,3 and 4. I have to disagree. I have to say the SR was up there with STM in my book.

Since they are so. . . . "similar", that doesn't surprise me.

I was referring watching STM and SR back to back. That is why I voted no.

I'll be first in line for a sequel anyway. I just know even though it's probably going to be wrath of zod and friends, what I'm looking forward to most is seeing Jason clobber Zod with a guitar.

give me a minute, I'll draw an illustration for you quickly in ms paint.

ok here, this is what I want to see.

forgive the crappyness. it's just a quick sketch. It'll be in slow motion so we can savor the moment.

Actually he's going to use a flute. ;)

I liked the movie, and even though there is supposed to be some romantic element between Lois/Superman/Clark. I thought that should be toned down in this movie. Luthor was good and I give Spacey his props. Routh did really well for someone who was filling a very loved actor's boots and cape. I even loved the Brando homage as well. But I think that this movie could have been ALOT better.

Superman II (Donner version and Lester Version) made the romance and the action equal out. (Even though I wish they did not use that amnesia kiss in the the Lester version. Donner's version from what I read of the script was different) Yeah all action is good for some fans. But if you someone who can actually pull something like what Puzo, Manc, the Newmans, and what Benton did. Then that would be great, but Dougherty, Harris, and Singer could not do that.

It was good as a movie to bring the Man of Tomorrow back in some level or another, but I hope the next one is better. Try to even out the romance, action, and story not focus on one or another.

After 20 years you'd have thought they would have had something better than what they did. A sequel vague or otherwise could have worked but the movie was hollow. I will differ to Super-Bats posts in this thread because really there is not much more to be said about it.

However, they should have assumed that most of the movie going public didn't see the movies from the 70's and 80's and just done a re-boot similar to what they did with the Batman franchise.

It might have been a little more worth it if they hadn't tried to pick up from 25 years ago.

No.

In fact, I popped in the Superman IV: The Quest for Peace on the weekend and honestly, I enjoyed it much more than Superman Returns.

Sure it was corny in many places, but for me, it was still more of a Superman movie than SR will ever be.

I did enjoy some parts of SR, including Routh as Supes - but the negatives overwhelmed the positives for me. I came out of the theatre as if someone gave me a left hook - dazed and confused as to wtf I just finished watching after such a long anticipation for it. :(

Worth the 20 year wait? Absolutely not. What I've learned about live-action Superman adaptations in the last 20 years is---NOBODY seems to quite "get it" yet.

The closest "live action" Superman I've really enjoyed in the recent years are the comics done by Alex Ross. Kingdom Come and Peace On Earth are as close to true live-action Superman adapation as we've got!

Kingdom Come.
Now THERES a superhero epic. Absolutely incredible story and art.
The last issue blew me AWAY. I was reading it in a cafe back in the summer of 1996. It was like the whole world around me had stopped while I was reading. My eyes were bulging out of my head. Alex Ross GETS Superman.
And it didn't cost $200million to make.

Anyone whos a Superman fan and doesn't own this...buy it today!

hey all......

I'm starting a new thread where I'm outlining my ideas for an Origin movie that uses some of the best scenes/plot points from SR, but in a different context.

It's the "My ideas for an Origin movie using scenes/plot points from SR" thread......yah...I know that's not very original....lol

I don't know if it's a movie that would be worth a 20 year wait......but I'd appreciate it if you guys and gals check it out and let me know what you think.......

please be patient, though, as I'll be adding new scene descriptions periodically.......thanks.....

No. Not really.

I waited 20 yrs to see a pseudo-new film??? Actually, I didn't wait at all, but I liked the original better anyway.

Singer says Nostalgia.

I say lack of creativity and a fear to explore new territory.

I did not want to see what I felt was an incomplete film w/ too many inaccuracies.

All in all, '06 was a disappointing Summer for me, and SR was the film I was anticipating the most. :down :(

I meant the special effects...sorry

Honestly? No. They could have done much, much, much, much, MUCH better than this. The movie was too confusing to newcomers. You can't just assume that everyone today knows Superman from 3 decades ago and run with it. While I thought Superman Returns was a fine film, it wasn't even close to what I expected or anticipated after a 20-year wait. The origin story needed to be told visually to current audiences, even if just through flashbacks. Where are all the flashbacks that Singer talked about? Weren't we supposed to see the key parts of the origin story through flashbacks? The least he could was to include scenes from the official prequel comicbooks.

Right on, Kingdom Come is the best damn Superman story I have ever read.

It is a true Superman Returns story about Superman leaving only to return to once again shoulder the responsibilities that comes with being Superman. This is the Superman that we should see on the big screen. I´m going to go and read it again now just to remind myself why I like Superman so much.

Is this a fake account? Seriously. I have a hard time believing that someone could actually write something this retarted unless they were doing it on purpose. First off, learn to communicate in at least a semi-intelligible manner. Second, it wasn't to show how lethal Batman can be, and I've heard that before. It was to hide the mobility of the Bat-suit. Flame away. I'm anxious to hear your wonderous thoughts on the subject.
"it was to hide the mobility of the bat-suit"WHAT THE **** ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT you stupid ******,the bat-suit had excellent mobility,if you want fight scenes go watch a jackie chan movie or "superman returns"

Waited 20 years? and all we got was Superboy Returns?

Even though I like superboy, I have to agree. It wasn't his time. Introduce him after we've gotten to know these people more.

So anyone who dislikes the film is a nerd, a hater, or a loser. It couldn't be that we simply didn't like it.

Thank you for clearing that up. My eyes are now open. I will now go shoot myself.

Fortunately for me only my opinion matters. So, if Singer makes another Superman film like SR then I'm gonna be just fine.......the rest of you may be $hit outta luck, but again that really doesn't effect me LOL!!!

Of course:up:
Your money, your ticket, your experiance.

But what we are highlighting as real Superman Fans, with a lifetime of hard knowledge of the character is that the movie doesn't come close to what a superman movie could be.

All Singer had to do was study the source material. Thats what screenwriters of Harry Potter did (At WB I might add) and other screenwriters do to adapt the source material(from novels, short stories etc). Theres plenty of toned down Superman stories in the books that could be translated very well for the silver screen.

Too Bad Singers vision is so narrow.
